    Supmech, the universal mechanics developed in the previous two papers, accommodates both quantum and classical mechanics as subdisciplines (a brief outline is included for completeness); this feature facilitates, in a supmech based treatment of quantum measurements, an unambiguous treatment of the apparatus as a quantum system approximated well by a classical one. Taking explicitly into consideration the fact that observations on the apparatus are made when it has `settled down after the measurement interaction' and are restricted to macroscopically distinguishable pointer readings, the unwanted superpositions of (system + apparatus) states are shown to be suppressed; this provides a genuinely physics based justification for the (traditionally \emph{postulated}) von Neumann projection/collapse rule. The decoherence mechanism brought into play by the stated observational constraints is free from the objections against the traditional decoherence program.Comment: 29 pages; one section and two references added; results unchange

    A complex space XX is in class QG{\mathcal Q}_G if it is a semistable quotient of the complement to an analytic subset of a Stein manifold by a holomorphic action of a reductive complex Lie group GG.     Using the concept of inner integral curves defined by Hirschowitz we generalize a recent result by Kim, Levenberg and Yamaguchi concerning the obstruction of a pseudoconvex domain spread over a complex homogeneous manifold to be Stein. This is then applied to study the holomorphic reduction of pseudoconvex complex homogeneous manifolds X=G/H. Under the assumption that G is solvable or reductive we prove that X is the total space of a G-equivariant holomorphic fiber bundle over a Stein manifold such that all holomorphic functions on the fiber are constant.Comment: 21 page

    On hyperbolicity of SU(2)-equivariant, punctured disc bundles over the complex affine quadric

    Given a holomorphic line bundle over the complex affine quadric Q2Q^2, we investigate its Stein, SU(2)-equivariant disc bundles. Up to equivariant biholomorphism, these are all contained in a maximal one, say Ωmax\Omega_{max}. By removing the zero section to Ωmax\Omega_{max} one obtains the unique Stein, SU(2)-equivariant, punctured disc bundle over Q2Q^2 which contains entire curves.     Photoelectro-Photometric Survey of Night Sky Conditions in the Vicinity of Iowa City

    During the summer 1962, a systematic survey of night sky conditions in the vicinity of Iowa City was carried out for the purpose of selecting the best site for the proposed research observatory of the State University of Iowa. A photoelectric photometer was attached to the Newtonian focus of an 11-inch reflector whose equatorial mounting was modified to a horizontal system. The equipment was carried by a truck and observations were made at six different sites, ranging in distance from eight to twenty-three miles in all directions from the city. In order to eliminate random errors due to variations in sky conditions from night to night, measurements of scattered city lights and the atmospheric extinctions were taken on at least two different sites during the same night and were repeated for six or seven different moonless nights at each site. As a result, it was concluded that the region about twelve miles south-southwest of the city is least affected by the artificial city light

    We investigated the performance of cefotaxime for the detection of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) or plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase (pAmpC) and the clinical characteristics of cefotaxime-non-susceptible Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae (CTXNS-EK) bacteraemia. All of the consecutive bloodstream isolates between 2005 and 2010 in a Japanese university hospital were characterised using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Risk factors and outcomes of CTXNS-EK were analysed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. We identified 58 CTXNS-EK (15.6%) from 249 E. coli and 122 K. pneumoniae. Cefotaxime with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of >1 μg/mL had a sensitivity of 98.3% and a specificity of 99.7% for the detection of ESBL or pAmpC. CTXNS-EK had increased from 4.5% in 2005 to 23% in 2009. Risk factors for CTXNS-EK were previous isolation of multidrug-resistant bacteria, use of oxyimino-cephalosporins or fluoroquinolones, and high Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score. Patients with CTXNS-EK bacteraemia less frequently received appropriate empirical therapy than patients with cefotaxime-susceptible EK bacteraemia (81% vs. 97%, p<0.001) and died within 30 days (21% vs. 5%, p=0.001). Using the current breakpoints of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) or the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST), cefotaxime alone can identify ESBL or pAmpC producers.     IL-8 production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells in nephrotic patients. We studied the interleukin 8 (IL-8) gene expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and the IL-8 serum concentration in patients with idiopathic minimal lesion nephrotic syndrome (IMLNS) and other glomerulopathies. PBMC from eight of the nine (IMLNS) patients in relapse demonstrated the presence of IL-8 mRNA. All three IMLNS patients in remission (P = 0.0026 when compared to patients in relapse) and the two patients with nephrotic syndrome with other glomerulopathies failed to elicit an IL-8 mRNA response. Eleven of the 12 IMLNS patients in relapse showed IL-8 serum concentration above the level of detection. Only one of the seven patients in remission had detectable serum levels of IL-8 (P = 0.0033 when compared to levels from IMLNS patients in relapse). IL-8 serum levels were not detectable in three patients with nephrotic syndrome and other glomerulopathies. Supernatants of PBMC cultures from IMLNS patients in relapse increased the 35sulfate uptake by rat GBM. This effect was abolished by the addition of anti-IL-8 neutralizing antibody to the culture media and reproduced by the addition to the media of IL-8 in concentrations found in the serum of IMLNS patients in relapse. Finally, the effect of IL-8 on the 35sulfate turnover of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) sulfated compounds was evaluated in vitro. A significant decrease in the percentage of residual 35sulfate incorporated in the GBM (41 ± 5, mean ± sem) was observed in cultures treated with IL-8 as compared to those that were not treated with IL-8 (58 ± 8, P < 0.01). Because IL-8 affects the metabolism of GBM compounds that may play a role in glomerular permeability, this lymphokine may have a potential pathogenic role in the proteinuria of IMLNS

    Development of geothermal field following the 2000 eruption of Usu volcano as revealed by ground temperature, resistivity and self-potential variations

    The 2000 eruption of Usu volcano, NE Japan, took place on the foot of the somma, and formed a cryptodome of 65 m high accompanying numerous faults. We made repeated measurements of ground temperature, Self-Potential (SP) and electrical resistivity, in order to clarify the mechanism of development of the newly formed geothermal field on the fault zone. Prior to the expansion of the geothermal field, we detected a resistive zone at the center of the geothermal zone and it supposed to evidence that the zone involving dry steam phase had been formed beneath the fault zone. A rapid expansion of the geothermal field followed along the fault zone away from the craters. The place of maximum amplitude of the SP field also migrated following the expansion of the high ground temperature zone. The high resistive part has shrunk as a consequence of the progress of condensation to warm the surroundings. Based on the observations, we delineated the process of the hydrothermal circulation. Considering the topographic effect of the SP field observed on the highly permeable zone in the Usu somma, the potential flow along the slope of the soma was expected to play an important role to promote the rapid expansion of the geothermal field and the migration of the most active part

    Spontaneous Extraskeletal Osteosarcoma in the Stomach of an Aged F344 Rat

    Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a very rare tumor in humans and animals including rats. This paper describes a case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma observed in the glandular stomach of an aged female Fischer 344 rat. Grossly, a whitish solid mass was observed at the greater curvature of the glandular stomach. Histologically, the tumor consisted of both atypical polygonal and pleomorphic spindle-shaped cells, with pleomorphic nuclei, and it contained variable amounts of osteoids and small clumps of mature bone tissue. In addition, mitotic figures were frequently observed. Neither invasion of the muscle layer or vessels in the stomach nor metastasis to distant organs was detected. There were no skeletal tumors in the body. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for osteocalcin, osteonectin, vimentin and S-100 protein. Judging from these results, the present tumor was diagnosed as extraskeletal osteosarcoma. This is the first report of spontaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma arising from the stomach in a rat
