    Two-stage hybrid feature selection algorithms for diagnosing erythemato-squamous diseases

    This paper proposes two-stage hybrid feature selection algorithms to build the stable and efficient diagnostic models where a new accuracy measure is introduced to assess the models. The two-stage hybrid algorithms adopt Support Vector Machines (SVM) as a classification tool, and the extended Sequential Forward Search (SFS), Sequential Forward Floating Search (SFFS), and Sequential Backward Floating Search (SBFS), respectively, as search strategies, and the generalized F-score (GF) to evaluate the importance of each feature. The new accuracy measure is used as the criterion to evaluated the performance of a temporary SVM to direct the feature selection algorithms. These hybrid methods combine the advantages of filters and wrappers to select the optimal feature subset from the original feature set to build the stable and efficient classifiers. To get the stable, statistical and optimal classifiers, we conduct 10-fold cross validation experiments in the first stage; then we merge the 10 selected feature subsets of the 10-cross validation experiments, respectively, as the new full feature set to do feature selection in the second stage for each algorithm. We repeat the each hybrid feature selection algorithm in the second stage on the one fold that has got the best result in the first stage. Experimental results show that our proposed two-stage hybrid feature selection algorithms can construct efficient diagnostic models which have got better accuracy than that built by the corresponding hybrid feature selection algorithms without the second stage feature selection procedures. Furthermore our methods have got better classification accuracy when compared with the available algorithms for diagnosing erythemato-squamous diseases

    Inverse Spin Hall Effect by Spin Injection

    Motivated by a recent experiment[Nature {\bf 442}, 176 (2006)], we present a quantitative microscopic theory to investigate the inverse spin-Hall effect with spin injection into aluminum considering both intrinsic and extrinsic spin-orbit couplings using the orthogonalized-plane-wave method. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is also clear that the magnitude of the anomalous Hall resistivity is mainly due to contributions from extrinsic skew scattering, while its spatial variation is determined by the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Nuclear pairing reduction due to rotation and blocking

    Nuclear pairing gaps of normally deformed and superdeformed nuclei are investigated using the particle-number conserving (PNC) formalism for the cranked shell model, in which the blocking effects are treated exactly. Both rotational frequency ω\omega-dependence and seniority (number of unpaired particles) ν\nu-dependence of the pairing gap Δ~\tilde{\Delta} are investigated. For the ground-state bands of even-even nuclei, PNC calculations show that in general Δ~\tilde{\Delta} decreases with increasing ω\omega, but the ω\omega-dependence is much weaker than that calculated by the number-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov approach. For the multiquasiparticle bands (seniority ν>2\nu> 2), the pairing gaps keep almost ω\omega-independent. As a function of the seniority ν\nu, the bandhead pairing gaps Δ~(ν,ω=0)\tilde{\Delta}(\nu,\omega=0) decrease slowly with increasing ν\nu. Even for the highest seniority ν\nu bands identified so far, Δ~(ν,ω=0)\tilde{\Delta}(\nu,\omega=0) remains greater than 70% of Δ~(ν=0,ω=0)\tilde{\Delta}(\nu=0,\omega=0).Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Natural convection in a triangular enclosure induced by solar radiation

    Natural convection in a triangular enclosure induced by solar radiation is simulated and analyzed. The numerical simulation reveals three possible distinct flow regimes in the enclosure. It also reveals the variations of the dominant heat transfer mode and the flow status with the horizontal position along the wedge. The whole domain can be divided horizontally into several regions according to the dominant mode of heat transfer. For small Rayleigh numbers, heat transfer over the entire domain is dominated by conduction. For medium Rayleigh numbers, there are two distinct regions. Heat transfer in the near shore region is dominated by conduction. As the distance from the shore increases, stable convection becomes the dominant mode. The region dominated by stable convection expands with increasing Rayleigh number. For high Rayleigh numbers, the whole region can be divided into three distinct regions where the dominant mode of heat transfer changes from conduction to stable convection and then to unstable convection as the distance from the shore increases. The region of flow instability also expands with increasing Rayleigh number

    Systematic study of proton-neutron pairing correlations in the nuclear shell model

    A shell-model study of proton-neutron pairing in 2p1f2p1f shell nuclei using a parametrized hamiltonian that includes deformation and spin-orbit effects as well as isoscalar and isovector pairing is reported. By working in a shell-model framework we are able to assess the role of the various modes of proton-neutron pairing in the presence of nuclear deformation without violating symmetries. Results are presented for 44^{44}Ti, 45^{45}Ti, 46^{46}Ti, 46^{46}V and 48^{48}Cr to assess how proton-neutron pair correlations emerge under different scenarios. We also study how the presence of a one-body spin-obit interaction affects the contribution of the various pairing modes.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figure
