The Kodaira dimension of the moduli of K3 surfaces
The moduli space of polarised K3 surfaces of degree 2d is a quasi-projective
variety of dimension 19. For general d very little has been known about the
Kodaira dimension of these varieties. In this paper we present an almost
complete solution to this problem. Our main result says that this moduli space
is of general type for d>61 and for d=46,50,54,58,60.Comment: 47 page

K3-fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds I, the twist map
A construction of Calabi-Yaus as quotients of products of lower-dimensional
spaces in the context of weighted hypersurfaces is discussed, including
desingularisation. The construction leads to Calabi-Yaus which have a fiber
structure, in particular one case has K3 surfaces as fibers. These Calabi-Yaus
are of some interest in connection with Type II -heterotic string dualities in
dimension 4. A section at the end of the paper summarises this for the

Lagrangian fibrations of holomorphic-symplectic varieties of K3^[n]-type
Let X be a compact Kahler holomorphic-symplectic manifold, which is
deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes of a K3
surface. Let L be a nef line-bundle on X, such that the 2n-th power of c_1(L)
vanishes and c_1(L) is primitive. Assume that the two dimensional subspace
H^{2,0}(X) + H^{0,2}(X), of the second cohomology of X with complex
coefficients, intersects trivially the integral cohomology. We prove that the
linear system of L is base point free and it induces a Lagrangian fibration on
X. In particular, the line-bundle L is effective. A determination of the
semi-group of effective divisor classes on X follows, when X is projective. For
a generic such pair (X,L), not necessarily projective, we show that X is
bimeromorphic to a Tate-Shafarevich twist of a moduli space of stable torsion

Isoscalar off-shell effects in threshold pion production from pd collisions
We test the presence of pion-nucleon isoscalar off-shell effects in the
 reaction around the threshold region. We find that these
effects significantly modify the production cross section and that they may

Accessibility-based reranking in multimedia search engines
Traditional multimedia search engines retrieve results based mostly on the query submitted by the user, or using a log of previous searches to provide personalized results, while not considering the accessibility of the results for users with vision or other types of impairments. In this paper, a novel approach is presented which incorporates the accessibility of images for users with various vision impairments, such as color blindness, cataract and glaucoma, in order to rerank the results of an image search engine. The accessibility of individual images is measured through the use of vision simulation filters. Multi-objective optimization techniques utilizing the image accessibility scores are used to handle users with multiple vision impairments, while the impairment profile of a specific user is used to select one from the Pareto-optimal solutions. The proposed approach has been tested with two image datasets, using both simulated and real impaired users, and the results verify its applicability. Although the proposed method has been used for vision accessibility-based reranking, it can also be extended for other types of personalization context
Unsupervised Bayesian linear unmixing of gene expression microarrays
Background: This paper introduces a new constrained model and the corresponding algorithm, called unsupervised Bayesian linear unmixing (uBLU), to identify biological signatures from high dimensional assays like gene expression microarrays. The basis for uBLU is a Bayesian model for the data samples which are represented as an additive mixture of random positive gene signatures, called factors, with random positive mixing coefficients, called factor scores, that specify the relative contribution of each signature to a specific sample. The particularity of the proposed method is that uBLU constrains the factor loadings to be non-negative and the factor scores to be probability distributions over the factors. Furthermore, it also provides estimates of the number of factors. A Gibbs sampling strategy is adopted here to generate random samples according to the posterior distribution of the factors, factor scores, and number of factors. These samples are then used to estimate all the unknown parameters. Results: Firstly, the proposed uBLU method is applied to several simulated datasets with known ground truth and compared with previous factor decomposition methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA), non negative matrix factorization (NMF), Bayesian factor regression modeling (BFRM), and the gradient-based algorithm for general matrix factorization (GB-GMF). Secondly, we illustrate the application of uBLU on a real time-evolving gene expression dataset from a recent viral challenge study in which individuals have been inoculated with influenza A/H3N2/Wisconsin. We show that the uBLU method significantly outperforms the other methods on the simulated and real data sets considered here. Conclusions: The results obtained on synthetic and real data illustrate the accuracy of the proposed uBLU method when compared to other factor decomposition methods from the literature (PCA, NMF, BFRM, and GB-GMF). The uBLU method identifies an inflammatory component closely associated with clinical symptom scores collected during the study. Algorithm Engineering in Robust Optimization
Robust optimization is a young and emerging field of research having received
a considerable increase of interest over the last decade. In this paper, we
argue that the the algorithm engineering methodology fits very well to the
field of robust optimization and yields a rewarding new perspective on both the
current state of research and open research directions.
  To this end we go through the algorithm engineering cycle of design and
analysis of concepts, development and implementation of algorithms, and
theoretical and experimental evaluation. We show that many ideas of algorithm
engineering have already been applied in publications on robust optimization.
Most work on robust optimization is devoted to analysis of the concepts and the
development of algorithms, some papers deal with the evaluation of a particular
concept in case studies, and work on comparison of concepts just starts. What
is still a drawback in many papers on robustness is the missing link to include
the results of the experiments again in the design
Gravitational excitons from extra dimensions
Inhomogeneous multidimensional cosmological models with a higher dimensional
space-time manifold are investigated under dimensional reduction. In the
Einstein conformal frame, small excitations of the scale factors of the
internal spaces near minima of an effective potential have a form of massive
scalar fields in the external space-time. Parameters of models which ensure
minima of the effective potentials are obtained for particular cases and masses
