    We introduce syntactic restrictions of the lexicographic path ordering to obtain the Light Lexicographic Path Ordering. We show that the light lexicographic path ordering leads to a characterisation of the functions computable in space bounded by a polynomial in the size of the inputs

    The Catalog of Infrared Observations (CIO) is a compilation of infrared astronomical observational data obtained from an extensive literature search of astronomical journals and major astronomical catalogs and surveys. The literature searches are complete for 1965 through 1986 in this Second Edition. The Catalog is published in two parts, with the observational data (roughly 200,000 observations of 20,000 individual sources) listed in Part I, and supporting appendices in Part II. The expanded Second Edition contains a new feature: complete IRAS 4-band data for all CIO sources detected, listed with the main Catalog observations, as well as in complete detail in the Appendix. The appendices include an atlas of infrared source positions, two bibliographies of infrared literature upon which the search was based, and, keyed to the main Catalog listings (organized alphabetically by author and then chronologically), an atlas of infrared spectral ranges, and IRAS data from the CIO sources. The complete CIO database is available to qualified users in printed microfiche and magnetic tape formats

    The Far Infrared Supplement: Catalog of Infrared Observations summarizes all infrared astronomical observations at far infrared wavelengths (5 to 1000 microns) published in the scientific literature from 1965 through 1986. The Supplement list contain 25 percent of the observations in the full Catalog of Infrared Observations (CIO), and essentially eliminates most visible stars from the listings. The Supplement is thus more compact than the main catalog, and is intended for easy reference during astronomical observations.     Near-IR studies of recurrent nova V745 Scorpii during its 2014 outburst

    The recurrent nova (RN) V745 Scorpii underwent its third known outburst on 2014 February 6. Infrared monitoring of the eruption on an almost daily basis, starting from 1.3d after discovery, shows the emergence of a powerful blast wave generated by the high velocity nova ejecta exceeding 4000 kms1^{-1} plowing into its surrounding environment. The temperature of the shocked gas is raised to a high value exceeding 108^{8}K immediately after outburst commencement. The energetics of the outburst clearly surpass those of similar symbiotic systems like RS Oph and V407 Cyg which have giant secondaries. The shock does not show a free-expansion stage but rather shows a decelerative Sedov-Taylor phase from the beginning. Such strong shockfronts are known to be sites for γ\gamma ray generation. V745 Sco is the latest nova, apart from five other known novae, to show γ\gamma ray emission. It may be an important testbed to resolve the crucial question whether all novae are generically γ\gamma ray emitters by virtue of having a circumbinary reservoir of material that is shocked by the ejecta rather than γ\gamma ray generation being restricted to only symbiotic systems with a shocked red giant (RG) wind. The lack of a free-expansion stage favors V745 Sco to have a density enhancement around the white dwarf (WD), above that contributed by a RG wind. Our analysis also suggests that the WD in V745 Sco is very massive and a potential progenitor for a future SN Ia explosion.Comment: To appear in ApJ (Letters

    Controlling the cold collision shift in high precision atomic interferometry

    We present here a new method based on a transfer of population by adiabatic passage that allows to prepare cold atomic samples with a well defined ratio of atomic density and atom number. This method is used to perform a measurement of the cold collision frequency shift in a laser cooled cesium clock at the percent level, which makes the evaluation of the cesium fountains accuracy at the 101610^{-16} level realistic. With an improved set-up, the adiabatic passage would allow measurements of atom number-dependent phase shifts at the 10310^{-3} level in high precision experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    Beginning in Hay of 1969 field surveys have been conducted in the Hog Island area of the James River to characterize the biota of the region. The objective of these surveys has been to determine any significant changes in the biota related to the operation of the nuclear power station. Although during the period of study, methods and stations have been changed to adjust the study to changing regulations, its basic character has remained. Communities surveyed have included benthos, epibenthos, zoo- and phytoplankton, fish, and fouling organisms. In addition, special studies of thermal tolerance have been conducted on oysters and Rangia clams. During this study period an additional aspect was added when entrainment studies to determine zooplankton mortality when entrapped in the thermal plume were initiated

    Rate-and-state friction properties of the Longitudinal Valley Fault from kinematic and dynamic modeling of seismic and aseismic slip

    The Longitudinal Valley Fault (LVF, Taiwan) is a fast slipping fault (∼5 cm/yr), which exhibits both seismic, and aseismic slip. Geodetic and seismological observations (1992-2010) were used to infer the temporal evolution of fault slip [Thomas et al., 2014a]. This kinematic model is used here to estimate spatial variations of steady-state velocity dependence of fault friction and to develop a simplified fully-dynamic rate-and-state model of the LVF. Based on the postseismic slip, we estimate that the rate-and-state parameter (a – b) σ[over-bar] decreases from ∼1.2 MPa near the surface to near velocity-neutral at 19 km depth. The inferred (a − b) values are consistent with the laboratory measurements on clay-rich fault gouges comparable to the Lichi Mélange, which borders the LVF. The dynamic model that incorporates the obtained (a – b) σ[over-bar] estimates as well as a VW patch with tuned rate-and-state properties produces a sequence of earthquakes with some realistic diversity and a spatio-temporal pattern of seismic and aseismic slip similar to that inferred from the kinematic modeling. The larger events have moment magnitude (M_w∼6.7) similar to the 2003 Chenkung earthquake, with a range of smaller events. The model parameterization allows reproducing partial overlap of seismic and aseismic slip before the earthquake, but cannot reproduce the significant postseismic slip observed in the previously locked patch. We discuss factors that can improve the dynamic model in that regard, including the possibility of temporal variations in (a − b) due to shear heating. Such calibrated dynamic models can be used to reconcile field observations, kinematic analysis, and laboratory experiments, and assess fault behavior
