Follow-up examination of linkage and association to chromosome 1q43 in multiple sclerosis.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative disease affecting >4,00,000 individuals in the United States. Population and family-based studies have suggested that there is a strong genetic component. Numerous genomic linkage screens have identified regions of interest for MS loci. Our own second-generation genome-wide linkage study identified a handful of non-major histocompatibility complex regions with suggestive linkage. Several of these regions were further examined using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with average spacing between SNPs of approximately 1.0 Mb in a dataset of 173 multiplex families. The results of that study provided further evidence for the involvement of the chromosome 1q43 region. This region is of particular interest given linkage evidence in studies of other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. In this follow-up study, we saturated the region with approximately 700 SNPs (average spacing of 10 kb per SNP) in search of disease-associated variation within this region. We found preliminary evidence to suggest that common variation within the RGS7 locus may be involved in disease susceptibility
Adiabatic times for Markov chains and applications
We state and prove a generalized adiabatic theorem for Markov chains and
provide examples and applications related to Glauber dynamics of Ising model
over Z^d/nZ^d. The theorems derived in this paper describe a type of adiabatic
dynamics for l^1(R_+^n) norm preserving, time inhomogeneous Markov
transformations, while quantum adiabatic theorems deal with l^2(C^n) norm
preserving ones, i.e. gradually changing unitary dynamics in C^n
A Method to Assess the Organizing Behaviors Used in Physicians\u27 Counseling of Standardized Parents after Newborn Genetic Screening
Well-organized conversation can improve people’s ability to comprehend and retain information. As part of a long-term effort to adapt Quality Improvement techniques for communication, we developed an explicit criteria method to assess usage of three organizing behaviors (OBs): ‘opening behaviors’ to establish goals; ‘structuring behaviors’ to guide patients through conversation; and ‘emphasizing behaviors’ that signal a need for attention. Pairs of abstractors independently reviewed transcripts in a demonstration sample of conversations between physicians and standardized parents after newborn screening identifies carrier status for sickle cell disease. Criteria for at least one OB were identified in 50/84 transcripts (60%), including 27 with at least one opening behavior (32%), 5 with at least one structuring behavior (6%), and 38 with at least one emphasizing behavior (45%). The limited number of OBs raises concern about communication after newborn screening. Assessment and improvement of OB usage may improve understanding and allow parents to more actively participate in health care

A survey of cost-sensitive decision tree induction algorithms
The past decade has seen a significant interest on the problem of inducing decision trees that take account of costs of misclassification and costs of acquiring the features used for decision making. This survey identifies over 50 algorithms including approaches that are direct adaptations of accuracy based methods, use genetic algorithms, use anytime methods and utilize boosting and bagging. The survey brings together these different studies and novel approaches to cost-sensitive decision tree learning, provides a useful taxonomy, a historical timeline of how the field has developed and should provide a useful reference point for future research in this field

Lesbian and bisexual women's experiences of sexuality-based discrimination and their appearance concerns
Lesbian and bisexual women frequently experience sexuality-based discrimination, which is often based on others' judgements about their appearance. This short article aims to explore whether there is a relationship between lesbian and bisexual women's experiences of sexuality-based discrimination and their satisfaction with the way that they look. Findings from an online survey suggest that discrimination is negatively related to appearance satisfaction for lesbian women, but not for bisexual women. It is argued that this difference exists because lesbian appearance norms are more recognisable and distinctive than bisexual women's appearance norms
Molecular Gas in Infrared Ultraluminous QSO Hosts
We report CO detections in 17 out of 19 infrared ultraluminous QSO (IR QSO)
hosts observed with the IRAM 30m telescope. The cold molecular gas reservoir in
these objects is in a range of 0.2--2.1 (adopting a
CO-to- conversion factor ). We find that the molecular gas properties of IR QSOs,
such as the molecular gas mass, star formation efficiency () and the CO (1-0) line widths, are indistinguishable
from those of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). A comparison of
low- and high-redshift CO detected QSOs reveals a tight correlation between
L and for all QSOs. This suggests that,
similar to ULIRGs, the far-infrared emissions of all QSOs are mainly from dust
heated by star formation rather than by active galactic nuclei (AGNs),
confirming similar findings from mid-infrared spectroscopic observations by
{\it Spitzer}. A correlation between the AGN-associated bolometric luminosities
and the CO line luminosities suggests that star formation and AGNs draw from
the same reservoir of gas and there is a link between star formation on
kpc scale and the central black hole accretion process on much smaller scales.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical
