Changes in the concentration of some constituents in women's saliva during the menstrual cycle were studied. Saliva was used because it is easier to collect than other body fluids and is continuously available for analysis. Glucose, the enzyme 17-Acetyl-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) and Calcium which are saliva constituents and belong to three different chemical groups were selected for the study. Several analytical techniques were investigated. The fluorometric assay procedure was found to be the best because of its specificity and sensitivity for the estimation of these constituents. resides the fluorametric method a spectrophotometric method was used in the NAG determination and an atomic absorption method in the calcium estimation. Glucose was estimated by an enzymatic method. This is based on the reaction of glucose with the enzymes glucose oxidase and peroxidase to yield hydrogen peroxide, which in turn oxidises a non-fluorescent substrate, p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, to a highly fluorescent product. The saliva samples in this determination had to be centrifuged at high speed, heated in a boiling water bath, centrifuged again and then treated with a mixture of cation and anion resins to remove the substances that inhibited the enzyme system. In the determination of the NAG activity the saliva samples were diluted with citric acid/phosphate buffer, and then centrifuged at high speed. The assay was based on the enzymic hydrolysis of the non-fluorescent substrate 4-Methyl-umbelli1eryl-p-D-glucosaminide to the highly fluorescent 4-Methyl-umbelliferone• Calcium was estimated by a fluorometric procedure based upon the measurement of the fluorescence produced by the complex formed between calcein blue and calcium, at pH 9 - 13. From the results obtained from the analysis of saliva samples of several women it was found that glucose showed a significant increase in its level around the expected time of ovulation. This was found in seven cycles out of ten. Similar results were found with the enzyme NAG. No significant change in the calcium levels was observe& at any particular time of the cycle. The levels of the glucose, the activity of the enzyme NAG and the concentration of the calcium were found to change daily, and to differ from one subject to another and in the same subject from cycle to cycle. The increase observed it salivary glucose levels and the enzyme NAG activity could be monitored to predict the time of ovulation

Dynamometer is a measurement instrument that functions to measure the cutting force on a lathe machine. The dynamometer is a measuring of tool that using of a strain gauge sensor of utilizing strain, which occur on the stalk strain as the reader, then it is converted into cutting force. The main purpose of this study is to produce a dynamometer with type four square stalks for cutting force measurement, dynamometer designed to be able tomeasure the axial force and tangential force. The design process consists of designing, manufacturing and calibration processes. The design step is started from material selection, dynamometer selection and dynamometer dimensional design. The dimensions from design is then drawn detail and analyzed stress. After design process is complete, then the process of making the mechanical components and electrical components dynamometer. Afterthat, the dynamometer is assembled for calibration process. The calibration process consists of hysteresis and repeatability errors. This research revealed the hysteresis for maximum tangential force of 1 milivolt and for maximum axial force of 2 milivolt. The repeatability error was 2 milivolt for the maximum tangential force and maximum axial force of 2 milivolt. Dimension of the dynamometer of type four square stalks was a length of 185mm and a diameter of 65 mm. The dynamometer can measure maximum force 500 N for axial and tangential force

Keywords: Budgeting, Gender, Compliance Audit

    Get PDF
There is an increasing trend for companies to have foreign-born Chief Executive Officers. It was found that 101 companies in the S&P 500 had foreign-born CEOs. The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether companies with foreign-born CEOs exhibited better financial performance. The study adopted a quantitative approach. We gathered two datasets: one detailing the performance of companies with CEOs born in the United States, and the other delineating the performance of companies with CEOs born outside the United States. We utilized the T-test for the difference of means on these two sets of data. This statistical method allowed us to assess the variations in financial performance metrics between the two groups over a six-year period. The findings indicate that foreign CEOs consistently outperformed their domestic counterparts across all three studied KPI performance measures from 2018 to 2023. T-tests for the difference of means indicated that these results were statistically significant

The Interplay of Hypoxia and Autophagy in Epithelial-Derived Ameloblastoma Cell Survival: A Pilot Study

Ameloblastoma is the most clinically-significant benign odontogenic jaw tumor with a locally-aggressive growth pattern and high malignant transformation rate. Epithelial-derived ameloblastoma cells (EPAMCs) demonstrate enhanced basal autophagy but the etiopathogenesis of ameloblastoma and the roles of hypoxia and autophagy in EPAMCs survival and recurrence are still unknown. The goals of this study were to assess expression of ameloblastoma-specific markers and the roles of hypoxia and autophagy on EPAMC survival. Primary and recurrent ameloblastoma tissues from two patients were immunostained with pan-cytokeratin, vimentin and SQSTM1/p62. Additionally, EPAMCs were subjected to severe hypoxia (0.1% O2) to define responsiveness to hypoxia based on expression of hypoxic and autophagic markers. Human odontoma-derived cells (HODCs) served as control. Both primary and recurrent tissue samples stained positive for pan-cytokeratin. Vimentin and SQSTM1/p62 were undetectable but the connective tissue stained positive for vimentin. Phosphorylated-40S ribosomal protein S6 (pS6) levels were decreased in EPAMC in both hypoxia and post-hypoxia. There were no significant changes among the remainder markers or between the EPAMC and HODCs. While the small sample size of this pilot study limited the statistical power several interesting trends were observed. In EPAMCs, canonical autophagy tended to be active at baseline, hypoxia, and re-oxygenation but did not increase when cells were subjected to hypoxia. Cells displayed reduced levels of pS6 and elevated levels of LC3ABII/LC3ABI and p62 24 hours following hypoxia. The vimentin expression and pan-cytokeratin pattern are consistent with an epithelial origin of ameloblastoma. Our data also suggests EPAMCs are using autophagy to survive severe hypoxia
