Simultaneous multiple responses modelling, optimisation and correlation of Asian type peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) roasting using response surface methodology

The effect of hot-air roasting temperatures and time on colour (L*), moisture content (% d.b.), hardness (N), and fracturability (mm) attributes of two different type of peanuts (China and India origin) were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM). The central composite design (CCD) was used to investigate temperatures ranging from 130–170 °C (China) and 130–200 °C (India), while roasting time was from 20–80 min (China) and 15–50 min (India). The results revealed that temperature and time have significant effect on all the responses. Increase in roasting time and temperature caused a decrease in all the responses for both peanuts. A feasible experimental condition of peanut roasting obtained from the optimisation of simultaneous multiple attributes’ response for the China and India peanuts was 152 °C for 60 min and 158 °C for 45 min, respectively. The strongest linearrelationship was found between hardness and fracturability, while the weakest was between colour and fracturability for both peanuts

Formulation of linguistic regression model based on natural words

When human experts express their ideas and thoughts, human words are basically employed in these expressions. That is, the experts with much professional experiences are capable of making assessment using their intuition and experiences. The measurements and interpretation of characteristics are taken with uncertainty, because most measured characteristics, analytical result, and field data can be interpreted only intuitively by experts. In such cases, judgments may be expressed using linguistic terms by experts. The difficulty in the direct measurement of certain characteristics makes the estimation of these characteristics imprecise. Such measurements may be dealt with the use of fuzzy set theory. As Professor L. A. Zadeh has placed the stress on the importance of the computation with words, fuzzy sets can take a central role in handling words [12, 13]. In this perspective fuzzy logic approach is offten thought as the main and only useful tool to deal with human words. In this paper we intend to present another approach to handle human words instead of fuzzy reasoning. That is, fuzzy regression analysis enables us treat the computation with words. In order to process linguistic variables, we define the vocabulary translation and vocabulary matching which convert linguistic expressions into membership functions on the interval [0–1] on the basis of a linguistic dictionary, and vice versa. We employ fuzzy regression analysis in order to deal with the assessment process of experts from linguistic variables of features and characteristics of an objective into the linguistic expression of the total assessment. The presented process consists of four portions: (1) vocabulary translation, (2) estimation, (3) vocabulary matching and (4) dictionary. We employed fuzzy quantification theory type 2 for estimating the total assessment in terms of linguistic structural attributes which are obtained from an expert

STUDENTS’ QUESTIONS IN INQUIRY-BASED CHEMISTRY CLASSROOMS

Questioning plays an important part in the teaching and learning science. Previous research has extensively focused on teachers’ questions compared to students’ questions. Research of students’ questions is vital as it shows how students think and their understanding of a content studied. Hence, this research focuses on students’ questions, types of questions asked and the sequence(s) after students’ question. Twenty three chemistry teachers and their students of national secondary schools were involved in this study. Ninety two chemistry lessons were observed, audio and video recorded. Transcript of the lessons showed that students’ questions were mainly related to content or science process skills as emphasised in inquiry teaching and learning. However, most questions asked by students were low order closed questions. The sequence after students’ questions with the highest percentage (83.33%) was IR (Initiation from student, followed by teachers’ response). This sequence showed that chemistry teachers in this study did not display inquiry-based questioning characteristics because in inquiry teaching, teachers should avoid responding to students’ questions. Instead, they should provide opportunities for students to respond to their friends’ questions. Hence, teachers should move towards student initiated inquiry, where students ask higher order thinking questions and increasing the interaction among the students

Radiological and functional outcome post fixation in unstable proximal femur fracture: comparison between proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) and proximal femoral locking compression plate (PFLCP)

INTRODUCTION: Incidence of unstable proximal femoral fracture is increasing in trend and the treatment is challenging. Operative treatment offers various selection of implant including plate and intramedullary nail. The purpose of this study is to compare radiological and functional outcome between both implants: PFNA and PFLCP. METHODS: This is a single centre observational cohort study involving all patients with unstable proximal femur fracture, admitted from January 2012 till December 2017. Plain pelvic and hip radiographs at immediate, 6 month and 1 year post-operative. Neck shaft angle (NSA) and its difference on contralateral side measured. Radiological outcome evaluated prevalence of varus malalignment and quality of fracture reduction. Functional outcome is measured by using Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS). RESULTS: Sample population is 91 patients. Radiological and functional outcome didn’t differ significantly (p>0.05) but PFLCP group had shown significant shorter union time (table 1,2). DISCUSSIONS: Association of radiological and functional outcome between both implants was statistically insignificant (p>0.05), which concurrent with the study by Singh AK, 2017, Li GX, 2012. CONCLUSION: Both implants were effective in treating unstable proximal femur fractures. REFERENCES: 1. Singh AK et al.Treatment of Unstable Trochanteric Femur Fracture:PFNA versus PFLCP. Am.
