The purpose of this study is to assess the distance education master’s non-thesis programs in the field of educational administration based on the opinions of instructors. Research data were collected using semi-structured "Instructor Interview Form," with 16 academics. Data were analyzed through content analysis. The results of the analyses indicate that most of the instructors find it inadequate, and have a pessimistic opinion about the future of educational administration as a field. Most of the instructors who participated in the study stated the opinion that the programs are initiated with commercial agendas, and have no contribution to the educational administration field. The participants indicated that quality standards that are accredited by independent accreditation organizations have to be established in order to ensure quality in these programs, and emphasized that permission has to be denied to institutions that lack the required technical infrastructure and competent instructors

This study was aimed to examine the effect of teaching with art-themed activities on students' mathematics achievement and to examine students' attitudes on the teaching process. The research was carried out with a total of 52 fifth grade students studying in Istanbul (Turkey). The research has a hybrid design in which qualitative data are used to support quantitative data. In the study carried out with the quasi-experimental research method, the experimental group was taught with art-themed mathematics activities, while the control group was taught with the activities in the Ministry of Education textbook. As a result of research, it was found that teaching mathematics with art-themed activities was more effective in increasing math achievement than teaching with the Ministry of Education textbook. Students considered teaching as fun in general through art-themed activities and expressed that they learned better by having fun. Findings are discussed with a reference to relevant and recent literature

Resveratrol diminishes bisphenol A-induced oxidative stress through TRPM2 channel in the mouse kidney cortical collecting duct cells

Bisphenol A (BisPH-A) is a latent danger that threatens our health, which we frequently exposure in our modern life (e.g. the widespread use of drinking water in plastic pet bottles). But the BisPH-A induced transient receptor potential melastatin 2 (TRPM2)-mediated oxidative stress and apoptosis in these cells has not been studied yet. Calcium (Ca2+) plays an important role in a versatile intracellular signal transduction that works over a wide range to regulate oxidative stress processes. TRPM2 is activated by oxidative stress and it has emerged as an important Ca2+ signaling mechanism in a variety of cells, contributing many cellular functions including cell death. Resveratrol (RESV), which belongs to the polyphenol group, acts as an antioxidant, eliminating cellular oxidative stress and increasing the body’s resistance to diseases. The current study aimed to elucidate the effect of antioxidant resveratrol on TRPM2-mediated oxidative stress induced by BisPH-A exposure in the mouse kidney cortical collecting duct cells (mpkCCDcl4). The cells were divided into four groups as control, resveratrol (50 µM for 24 h), BisPH-A (100 µM for 24 h) and BisPH-A + RESV. Intracellular free Ca2+ concentrations and TRPM2 channel currents were high in BisPH-A treated cells, but decreased with resveratrol treatment. In addition, BisPH-A induced mitochondrial membrane depolarization, reactive oxygen species (ROS), caspase 3, caspase 9 and apoptosis values were decreased by the resveratrol treatment. In conclusion, resveratrol protected cells from BisPH-A induced oxidative damage. In this study, we showed that TRPM2 channel mediates this protective effect of resveratrol. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

    Get PDF
It was aimed to investigate the radioprotective activity of Urtica dioica L. seed extract (UDSE) in the whole blood and liver of radiation-administered rats, both biochemically and immunohistochemically. 32 rats were divided into 4 groups (n:8). Control group (C): no administration for 10 days. Radiation group (IR): fed pellets for 10 days after exposure to radiation. Radiation + UDSE (IR+UDSE) group: exposed to radiation and fed UDSE for 10 days. UDSE group (UDSE): fed UDSE for 10 days. Radiation (5Gy) was given as a single fraction. 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and deoxyguanosine (dG) levels were analyzed by biochemical method and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx-1) analyses were performed by immunohistochemical method in the liver and blood tissues of the rats. The increased 8-OHdG rates and decreased GPx-1 immunoreactivity was observed in the IR group. Those parameters were ameliorated in the IR+UDSE group when compared to the IR group. UDSE is likely to be a valuable radioprotector against the harmful effects of radiation

Bu olgumuzda daha önce 2 kez lomber operasyon geçiren, abse ve fistül oluşmasına rağmen 2 yıl boyunca medikal olarak takip edilen hasta sunarak spinal enfeksiyonlara yaklaşım konusuna dikkat çekmek istedikLomber disc hernias (LDH) are one of the most basic illnesses that affect many people today. Surgical treatment is planned in patients who do not benefit from conservative treatment. One of the common complications after surgery is spinal infections. Spinal infections can affect disc spacing and vertebral body, and may create lumbar abscesses. Infection begins clinically with low back and back pain, then movement limitation, leg pain and fever are seen. We wanted to draw attention to the approach to spinal infections by presenting a patient who had undergone a lomber operation twice in our present circumstance and who was followed up for 2 years despite medical abcess and fistula formation

    Get PDF
Objectives: We aimed to investigate the thiol/disulfide balance in ketone positive (hyperemesis gravidarum) and ketonenegative pregnant women with nausea and vomiting.Material and methods: A total of 60 patients under the 14th week of pregnancy were included in this study, and they weredivided into two groups. Group 1 included 30 pregnant women with ketone positive, group 2 included 30 ketone negativepregnant women with nausea, and vomiting. Results: The native thiol, disulfide, and total thiol concentrations were measured using an automated method and comparedamong the two groups. There were also three indexes that are derived from disulfide, native and total thiol (Index1 = 100 × disulfide/native thiol); (Index 2 = 100 × disulfide/total thiol); (Index 3 = 100 × native thiol/total thiol). Whencompared with Group 1 and Group 2, total thiol was high, native thiol was low but not statistically significant. Disulphide(p = 0.046), index 1 (p = 0.036) and index 3 (p = 0.034) were statistically significant. Conclusions: Patients with ketone positive are shifting to OS direction due to lack of nutrients and electrolytes. This studyemphasizes the therapeutic potential of antioxidant supplementation, which is becoming an increasingly used approachin treating the symptoms of women with ketone positive

Single-cell dielectrophoretic movement and dielectrophoretic deformation of monocyte cells were interrogated applying 20 V pp , 50 kHz to 1 MHz signal in the 3D carbon electrode array. Heterogeneity of the monocyte population is shown in terms of the crossover frequencies, translational movement, and deformation index of the cells. The results presented that crossover range for monocytes was 100 kHz - 200 kHz, the translational movement of the cells was rapidly altered when the initial positions of the cells were in the negative dielectrophoretic region. Finally, the deformation index of the monocyte population varied from 0.5 to 1.5

Objectives: Ghrelin levels can play an important role in maintaining the energy balance of pregnant women. Therefore,we investigated the relationship between HG and Ghrelin.Material and methods: 50 female patients admitted to the VAN Yüzüncü Yıl University, Gynecology and Obstetrics Departmentwere evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 included 25 pregnant women with HG, Group 2included 25 healthy pregnant women. Results: The two groups showed similarities in terms of age, gravidity, B-HCG and gestational age. There was no statisticallysignificant difference between the two groups in terms of the Ghrelin levels (p = 0.867).Conclusions: This study shows that there is no difference between Ghrelin levels and HG during pregnancy. IncreasedGhrelin in previous studies was attributed to low oral intake. Another study reported lower Ghrelin levels are not the resultof, but are rather the cause of, reduced oral intake during. The balancing of these two conditions does not lead to a changein the level of Ghrelin

Rapid and reliable characterization of hematopoietic cells still remain the first step for precise medicine. Diagnosis of various diseases, ranging from infectious to cancer, relies on quantification of hematopoietic cells from blood. Therefore, there is an emerging need for label-free, lowcost, time-efficient, reproducible and quantitative characterization tools for the blood cells. Addressed herein is a numerical analysis for dielectrophoretic characterization of red blood cells, T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes and monocytes, which quantitatively incorporate with the membrane features of these cells to provide more insight into their dielectrophoretic responses
