    Productive Ecosystems and the arrow of development

    Economic growth is associated with the diversification of economic activities, which can be observed via the evolution of product export baskets. Exporting a new product is dependent on having, and acquiring, a specific set of capabilities, making the diversification process path-dependent. Taking an agnostic view on the identity of the capabilities, here we derive a probabilistic model for the directed dynamical process of capability accumulation and product diversification of countries. Using international trade data, we identify the set of pre-existing products, the product Ecosystem, that enables a product to be exported competitively. We construct a directed network of products, the Eco Space, where the edge weight corresponds to capability overlap. We uncover a modular structure, and show that low- and middle-income countries move from product communities dominated by small Ecosystem products to advanced (large Ecosystem) product clusters over time. Finally, we show that our network model is predictive of product appearances

    Estimation of spleen volume and surface area of the newborns’ cadaveric spleen using stereological methods

    Background: The purpose of this study was to compare different techniques for the estimation of spleen volume and surface area using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images, ultrasonography (USG) images and cadaveric specimen, and to evaluate errors associated with volume estimation techniques based onfluid displacement.Materials and methods: Five new born cadavers, aged 39.7 ± 1.5 weeks, weighted 2.220 ± 1.056 g, were included in the present study. Three different methods were used to assess the spleen volume. The vertical section technique was applied using cycloid test probes for estimation of spleen surface area in MRI.Results: The mean ± standard deviation of spleen volumes by fluid displacement was 4.82 ± 3.85 cm3. Volumes determined by the Cavalieri’s principle using physical section and point-counting techniques were 4.45 ± 3.47 cm3 and 4.65 ± 3.75 cm3, respectively; volumes measured by USG and cadaver using ellipsoid formula were 4.70 ± 3.02 cm3 and 5.98 ± 4.58 cm3, respectively. No significant differences were found among all methods (p > 0.05). The spleen surface area was calculated as a 32.3 ± 20.6 cm2 by physical sections using cadaver and also it was determined on axial, sagittal and coronal MR planes as 24.9 ± 15.2 cm2, 18.5 ± 5.92 cm2 and 24.3 ± 12.7 cm2, respectively.Conclusions: As a result, MR images allow an easy, reliable and reproducible volume and surface area estimation of normal and abnormal spleen using Cavalieri’sprinciple. We consider that our study may serve as a reference for similar studies to be conducted in future

    Phenological observations belonging to vegetation period of some native and exotic plant species in KTU Kanuni campus

    It is possible to determine specific periods in plants during the vegetation period making phenological observations. When making phenological observations, one can be collect information about occurrence time of some events, such as sowing, germination and bud bursting. Particularly, this evidence will contribute s to the selection of species in site conditions, when making decisions about the species to be left in the field. Therefore, it is important to know blossoming time and lifespan of flowers during the seasons. If coloration of the plants to be used in the landscape design is known to depend on the season, much better compositions with the plants can be created. The aim of the paper is to reveal the differences in the beginning of vegetation of some native and exotic plant species found in the campus of Karadeniz Technical University. In this study, bud bursting times of 19 species of bud bursting dates, including 10 native trees, 5 exotic trees, 2 native shrubs and 2 exotic shrub species were investigated during the 4 phases. Thus, when observations were made for the times from swelling of the buds to the completion of the bud burst, it appeared that the bursting period for Acer platanoides L. was completed in the longest time and those for Carpinus betulus L. and Liquidambar orientalis Mill. – over the shortest time from the native species. The same period for Wisteria sinensis (Sims) DC. was completed in the longest time, while for Prunus serrulata Lindl. «Kandzan» it was completed in the shortest time for the exotic species

    Kırka Boraks atıklarının soda liçi

    Bor, çok geniş kullanım alanları ile, insanlığın bugünkü ve gelecekteki yaşamlarında, vazgeçilmez bir endüstriyel hammadde olarak önemini gittikçe arttıracaktır. Ülkemiz bu açıdan şanslı bir konumda olup, toplam dünya bor rezervlerinin yaklaşık %60 'mı içermektedir Bu nedenlerden dolayı, bor cevherlerimizin en verimli bir şekilde üretimi ülkemiz açısından çok fazla önem arz etmektedir. Kırka boraks konsantratöründe, her yıl yaklaşık %10-12 B2O3 tenörlü 250 bin ton yaş artık oluşmakta ve bunun yanında artık göletinde de benzer tenörlü yaklaşık 4 milyon ton birikmiş katı artık bulunmaktadır. Artıkların teknolojik koşullara uygun olarak değerlendirilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada, kırka boraks artıklarının soda liçi ile değerlendirilmesinde etken olan parametreler ayrıntılı bir şekilde araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla, boraks artıklarının Na2C03 ve NaHCC>3 liçi; değişik sıcaklık, çözücü"miktarları, katı/sıvı oranlan ve çözeltine sürelerinde denenmiş olup, düşük çözücü oranlarında, optimal sıcaklık ve sürede başarılı sonuçlar alınmıştır. Sonuçta, seyreltik soda çözeltisi ile yapılan deneylerde, artiklardaki boraks yüksek verimle çözünmüş ve elde edilen bulgulardan yararlanılarak, tesisin mevcut çalışma koşullarına uygun optimum öneri akım şemalan geliştirilmiştir. Aynca, bu yöntemle boraks artıklarının değerlendirilmesinde, çözücü olarak tronanın kullanılması ile ülkemizde büyük bir potansiyele sahip olan trona yataklan yem bir kullanım alam bulmuş olacaktır.Boron will continue its importance in the recent world and in the future as a very well-known and necessary industrial rawmaterial with common use areas. Our country is very advantegeous in this point and contains approximately 60 % of total world reserves of boron. Thus production of boron ores is greatly significant for our country. In the Kırka Tincal Concentrator, approximately 250 000 tons wet tailings with a grade of 10 -12 % are produced and separately 4 million tons tailings with similar grade are disposed. Beneficiation from the Kırka Tincal tailings is thereby necessary. In this study, the effective parameters m soda leaching of the Kırka Tincal tailings have been investigated in detail. For this aim, Na2CC>3 and NaHCC>3 leaching of the tailings at different temperature, concentration, solid/liquid ratio and leaching time were carried out. As a conclusion, in the experiments made with aqueous soda solutions, tincal were efficiently extracted and an optimum processing plant proposal was developed. Furthermore, with use of trona in this processing method of the tailings, the great trona deposits will find a different use

    Is there a gender difference in anatomic features of incisive canal and maxillary environmental bone?

    Objectives The effect of gender on anatomic structures and various body systems were illustrated in the literature. The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of gender and tooth loss on incisive canal characteristics and buccal bone dimensions in the anterior maxilla. Materials and methods Computed tomographies ( CTs ) of 417 male and 516 female patients in four dental clinics were included in this study. The diameter and the length of the incisive canal; width and the length of the bone anterior to the canal; palatal bone length, root length, and root width of the central incisor teeth were measured and recorded from CT sections. Results Mean incisive canal length was 11.96 ± 2.73 mm and 10.39 ± 2.47 mm in men and women, respectively, ( P  < 0.05). In men, mean canal diameter was 2.79 ± 0.94 mm whereas in women it was 2.43 ± 0.85 mm and this difference was statistically significant ( P  < 0.05). Men had significant higher buccal bone dimensions (length and width of the bone anterior to the canal) than women. Absence of teeth in the anterior maxilla decreased incisive canal length and buccal bone dimensions; however, canal diameter remain unchanged. Conclusions Present results suggested a gender related differences in anatomic features of incisive canal and surrounding buccal bone.     Moving beyond European and Latin American Typologies:The Peculiarities of AKP’s Populism in Turkey

    Despite the growing literature on Turkish populism, there is yet no consensus on how best to categorise the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi or AKP). This article argues that this lack of consensus is due to a selective focus on the attributes of AKP’s populism. Indeed, when the party’s features are examined holistically, it does not neatly conform to the dominant typologies of populism, which were conceived mostly for European and Latin American examples. For historical reasons, AKP’s populist discourse defines “the people” versus “the elite” in civilisational terms and combines this with strategies of neo-liberalism, strong party organisation and grassroots mobilisation. This blend of populism distinguishes the AKP case from the exclusionary/inclusionary and classical/neo-liberal/radical typologies previously identified by the literature. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party in India and the Thai Rak Thai Party in Thailand have similar attributes to the AKP, drawing attention to the need to move beyond the existing ideological and strategic approaches to populism and towards a more comprehensive socio-cultural approach. The article contributes to the literature on populism by highlighting possible avenues for further research based on such a comprehensive understanding of populism based also on cases from Asia

    Permafrost conditions in the Mediterranean region since the Last Glaciation.

    Cold-climate geomorphological processes today in the Mediterranean region are only distributed in the highest mountain environments. However, climate condition prevailing during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene have conditioned significant spatio-temporal variations of the glacial and periglacial domain in these mountains, including permafrost. In this communication we examine permafrost condition in the Mediterranean region taking into account five periods: Last Glaciation, deglaciation, Holocene, Little Ice Age (LIA) and present-day. The distribution of currently inactive permafrost-derived landforms and sedimentary records indicates that the permafrost elevation during the Last Glaciation was ca. 1000 m lower than present. Permafrost was also widespread in non-glaciated slopes above the snowline forming rock glaciers and block streams, as well as in relatively flat summit areas where meter-sized stone circles developed. As in most areas of the Northern Hemisphere, the deglaciation in the Mediterranean region started ca. 19-20 ka. The exposed terrain by retreating glaciers was affected by paraglacial dynamics and intense periglacial processes, mostly associated with permafrost condition. Many rock glaciers, protalus lobes and block streams formed in these recently deglaciated environments, becoming gradually inactive as temperatures rose during the Bølling-Allerød. Following the Younger Dryas glacial advance, the last massive deglaciation in Mediterranean mountains took place during the Early Holocene together with a progressive shift of the periglacial belt to higher elevations. It is unlikely that widespread permafrost have existed in Mediterranean mountains during the Holocene, except in the highest massifs exceeding 2500-3000 m. The colder climate prevailing during the LIA favoured a minor glacial advance and the spatial expansion of permafrost, with the development of new protalus lobes and rock glaciers in the highest massifs. Finally, the warming started during the second half of the 19th century has led to glacial retreat and/or complete melting, increased paraglacial activity, migration of periglacial processes to the highest lands and degradation of alpine permafrost along with geoecological changes

    The Mediterranean Island Wetlands (MedIsWet) inventory: strengths and shortfalls of the currently available floristic data

    MedIsWet (Conservation of the island wetlands of the Mediterranean Basin) is a MAVA funded project which aims at investigating all seasonal or permanent island wetlands both natural and artificial, with a minimum extent of 0.1 hectares. More than 16,000 wetlands from almost all the Mediterranean, including islands from France, Italy, Malta, Croatia, Cyprus, Tunisia, Turkey, Greece and Spain were mapped. Over 2,500 of them were inventoried in the field and more than 500 scientific contributions catalogued. In total, more than 35,000 plant occurrences were uploaded, in a standardised and comparable way, on the national open-source web portals. These can be related to the recorded threats, uses and other spatially retrievable information. Here, we show strengths and shortfalls of the already available information about the floristic records. Although further improvements are needed, we discuss how these data can be used for research and policy actions and to develop conservation projects
