The phase relation between sunspot numbers and soft X-ray flares
To better understand long-term flare activity, we present a statistical study
on soft X-ray flares from May 1976 to May 2008. It is found that the smoothed
monthly peak fluxes of C-class, M-class, and X-class flares have a very
noticeable time lag of 13, 8, and 8 months in cycle 21 respectively with
respect to the smoothed monthly sunspot numbers. There is no time lag between
the sunspot numbers and M-class flares in cycle 22. However, there is a
one-month time lag for C-class flares and a one-month time lead for X-class
flares with regard to sunspot numbers in cycle 22. For cycle 23, the smoothed
monthly peak fluxes of C-class, M-class, and X-class flares have a very
noticeable time lag of one month, 5 months, and 21 months respectively with
respect to sunspot numbers. If we take the three types of flares together, the
smoothed monthly peak fluxes of soft X-ray flares have a time lag of 9 months
in cycle 21, no time lag in cycle 22 and a characteristic time lag of 5 months
in cycle 23 with respect to the smoothed monthly sunspot numbers. Furthermore,
the correlation coefficients of the smoothed monthly peak fluxes of M-class and
X-class flares and the smoothed monthly sunspot numbers are higher in cycle 22
than those in cycles 21 and 23. The correlation coefficients between the three
kinds of soft X-ray flares in cycle 22 are higher than those in cycles 21 and
23. These findings may be instructive in predicting C-class, M-class, and
X-class flares regarding sunspot numbers in the next cycle and the physical

Evidence for trans-cis isomerization of the p-coumaric acid chromophore as the photochemical basis of the photocycle of photoactive yellow protein
AbstractAnalysis of the chromophore p-courmaix acid, extracted from the ground state and the long-lived blue-shifted photocycle intermediate of photoactive yellow protein, shows that the chromophore is reversibly converted from the trans to the cis configuration, while progressing through the photocycle. The detection of the trans and cis isomers was carried out by high performance capillary zone electrophoresis and further substained by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The data presented here establish the photo-isomerization of the vinyl double bond in the chromophore yellow protein, a eubacterial photosensory protein. A similar isomerization process occurs in the structurally very different sensory rhodopsins, offering an explanation for the strong spectroscopic similarities between photoactive yellow protein and the sensory rhodopsins. This is the first demonstration of light-induced isomerization of a chromophore double bond as the photochemical basis for photosensing in the domain of Bacteria

Characterization of a novel elliptically polarized wiggler
We report on the initial characterization of an elliptically polarized wiggler built by a collaboration between the Advanced Photon Source, the Institute of Nuclear Physics, and the National Synchrotron Light Source. The wiggler has recently been installed in the X13 straight section of the NSLS X-Ray ring. The device consists of a vertical permanent-magnet wiggler and a horizontal electromagnet wiggler. The electromagnets allow the wiggler to produce on-axis circularly polarized soft x-rays with the capability of AC modulation of the polarization. The maximum switching frequency that can be reached is 100 Hz. The degree of circular polarization of the radiation from the wiggler was characterized by making magnetic circular dichroism measurements using the X13A soft x-ray beamline. For a vertical deflection parameter, K{sub x}, of 1.6, the dichroism effects at the Fe L{sub 2,3} edges indicate a degree of circular polarization of approximately 75% using an aperture with a vertical acceptance of 87 {mu}rad. Because both the left- and right-circularly polarized photons traverse identical paths through the beamline optical system, significantly smaller intensity fluctuations associated with switching of the polarization were observed that are typically possible at bending magnet beamlines. This, together with the relatively fast modulation rate, means that it will now be feasible to perform a variety of experiments that have not been possible using bending magnet sources

Soft x-ray spectroscopy undulator beamline at the Advanced Photon Source
Construction of the high-resolution soft x ray spectroscopy undulator beamline, 2ID-C, at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) has been completed. The beamline, one of two soft x ray beamlines at the APS, will cover the photon energy range from 500 to 3,000 eV, with a maximum resolving power between 7,000 and 14,000. The optical design is based on a spherical grating monochromator (SGM) giving both high resolution and high flux throughput. Photon flux is calculated to be approximately 10{sup 12}--10{sup 13} photons per second with a beam size of approximately 1 x 1 mm{sup 2} at the sample
Electromagnetically induced transparency in multi-level cascade scheme of cold rubidium atoms
We report an experimental investigation of electromagnetically induced
transparency in a multi-level cascade system of cold atoms. The absorption
spectral profiles of the probe light in the multi-level cascade system were
observed in cold Rb-85 atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap, and the
dependence of the spectral profile on the intensity of the coupling laser was
investigated. The experimental measurements agree with the theoretical
calculations based on the density matrix equations of the rubidium cascade

A Multi-Phase Transport model for nuclear collisions at RHIC
To study heavy ion collisions at energies available from the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider, we have developed a multi-phase transport model that
includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions. Specifically,
the parton cascade model ZPC, which uses as input the parton distribution from
the HIJING model, is extended to include the quark-gluon to hadronic matter
transition and also final-state hadronic interactions based on the ART model.
Predictions of the model for central Au on Au collisions at RHIC are reported.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Static coupling effect of a two-degree-of-freedom direct drive induction motor
Two-degree-of-freedom motors are capable of producing linear, rotary, and helical motion, and thus have widespread applications in special industries. In this study, a new concept- static coupling effect is studied in the two-degree-of-freedom direct-drive induction motor (2DoFDDIM). The proposed approach is based on the image method and the three-dimensional (3D) finite-element method. The image method model is established to analyse its reasons and predict the main effects, which are then verified by the proposed 3D finite-element static coupling model and experiments. The induced voltages and currents are produced in the static part and induced torque or force is obtained, even though the static part is not energised. It is concluded that the static coupling effect increases with the supply frequency and is influenced by the stator winding configuration. Thus, the existence of the static coupling effect is confirmed, which must be taken into account in future optimisation and precise control of the 2DoFDDIM
Systematic review of coexistent epileptic seizures and Alzheimer's disease : incidence and prevalence
Background/Objectives
Coexistent seizures add complexity to the burden of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aim to estimate the incidence and prevalence of coexistent seizures and AD and summarize characteristics.
Design
A systematic review and meta‐analysis (PROSPERO protocol registration CRD42020150479).
Setting
Population‐, community‐, hospital‐, or nursing home‐based.
Participants and measurements
Thirty‐nine studies reporting on seizure incidence and prevalence in 21,198 and 380,777 participants with AD, respectively, and AD prevalence in 727,446 participants with seizures. When statistical heterogeneity and inconsistency (assessed by Q statistic and I2) were not shown, rates were synthesized using random effect.
Results
Studies were conducted in Australia, Brazil, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States. The incidence of seizures among people with clinically diagnosed AD ranged from 4.2 to 31.5 per 1000 person‐years. Prevalence of seizures among people with clinically diagnosed AD ranged from 1.5% to 12.7% generally, but it rose to the highest (49.5% of those with early‐onset AD) in one study. Meta‐analysis reported a combined seizure prevalence rate among people with pathologically verified AD at 16% (95% confidence interval [CI] 14–19). Prevalence of seizure in autosomal dominant AD (ADAD) ranged from 2.8% to 41.7%. Being younger was associated with higher risk of seizure occurrence. Eleven percent of people with adult‐onset seizures had AD (95%CI, 7‐14).
Conclusion
Seizures are common in those with AD, and seizure monitoring may be particularly important for younger adults and those with ADAD
Amplitudes With Different Helicity Configurations Of Noncommutative QED
The amplitudes of purely photonic and photon{2-fermion processes of non-
commutative QED (NCQED) are derived for different helicity configurations of
photons. The basic ingredient is the NCQED counterpart of Yang-Mills recursion
relations by means of Berends and Giele. The explicit solutions of recursion
relations for NCQED photonic processes with special helicity configurations are

Sexual violence against women and children in Chinese societies
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the reported patterns of sexual violence against women and children in China. It reviews the prevalence of and risk factors for various types of sexual violence and discusses community knowledge and perceptions of these violent acts. It also critically examines three major problems of sexual violence research in China. First, the diversity of findings and study methods reported by surveys and criminal reports reflects the problems in obtaining accurate figures on the scope of the problem. Second, precautions must be taken in reading studies on Chinese culture-specific risk factors for domestic violence. Third, the study of culture-specific factors should not focus solely on cultural factors in a vacuum but rather, should examine traditional culture in the context of modern societies and consensus international standards of human rights.
