    Retrieval of electron-atom scattering cross sections from laser-induced electron rescattering of atomic negative ions in intense laser fields

    We investigated the two-dimensional electron momentum distributions of atomic negative ions in an intense laser field by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) and using the first- and 2nd-order strong-field approximations (SFA). We showed that photoelectron energy distributions and low-energy photoelectron momentum spectra predicted from SFA are in reasonable agreement with the solutions from the TDSE. More importantly, we showed that accurate electron-atom elastic scattering cross sections can be retrieved directly from high-energy electron momentum spectra of atomic negative ions in the laser field. This opens up the possibility of measuring electron-atom and electron-molecule scattering cross sections from the photodetachment of atomic and molecular negative ions by intense short lasers, respectively, with temporal resolutions in the order of femtoseconds.Comment: 6 papges, 5 figure

    Changing trends of the disease burden of non-rheumatic valvular heart disease in China from 1990 to 2019 and its predictions: Findings from global burden of disease study

    ObjectiveChina has an increasing burden of non-rheumatic valvular heart disease (NRVHD) as the aging of the population is deepening. The aim was to assess the age and sex-specific prevalence and DALYs of NRVHD in China from 1990 to 2019 and to predict the burden in the next 25 years.MethodsThe Global Burden of Disease Study (2019) was used to extract the data of age- and sex-specific incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of NRVHD in China, 1990-2019. We estimated the annual percentage change (EAPC) to access the temporal trends of the disease burden of NRVHD. The R package called Nordpred was used to perform an age-period-cohort analysis to predict the prevalence of NRVHD in the next 25 years.ResultsThe number of incident cases of NRVHD increased from 93.16 thousand in 1990 to 325.05 thousand in 2019. Overall upward trends were observed in the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) from 1990 to 2019. Significant temporal trends in mortality and DALYs of NRVHD were observed. High systolic blood pressure, high sodium diet, and lead exposure were the main driving forces for NRVHD. In the next 25 years, the number of new cases and deaths of NRVHD should continue to increase to 390.64 thousand and 10.0 thousand, respectively. The ASIR should show an upward trend, while the ASMR should show a downward trend among men and women.ConclusionIn China, the overall rates of NRVHD have increased over the past 30 years, and there has been a substantial increase in the burden of NRVHD due to population growth and aging and will continue to increase in the next 25 years. Our results can help shape a multifactorial approach and public policy to reduce the NRVHD burden throughout China

    The effect of abusive supervision variability on work–family conflict: The role of psychological detachment and optimism

    Although a number of studies have examined the effects of abusive supervision variability, which refers to leaders engaging in differential abuse toward different subordinates within the team on work-related outcomes, scant research has investigated whether and how abusive supervision variability affects non-work outcomes. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, the current study explores how abusive supervision variability affects work–family conflict through psychological detachment, as well as the moderating role of optimism. Results based on a survey of 260 employees from nine companies show that abusive supervision variability is significantly and positively related to work–family conflict. Psychological detachment mediates the effect of abusive supervision variability on work–family conflict. Optimism moderates the relationship between abusive supervision variability and psychological detachment and the indirect effects of abusive supervision variability on work–family conflict through psychological detachment. This study extends the literature on the effects of abusive supervision variability and provides several important practical implications

    ObjectiveThis study aimed to understand the temporal trends in the disease burden of stroke and its attributable risk factors in China, along with the future trends in the next 25 years, that is important for effective prevention strategies and improvement, and to provide new insights into the age- and sex-specific incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and their trends from 1990 to 2019, and the prediction in the next 25 years.MethodsThe Global Burden of Disease Study (2019) was used to extract the data on age- and sex-specific incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of stroke in China, 1990–2019. There has been a substantial increase in the burden of stroke due to risk factors and will continue to increase in the next 25 years

    Risk factors for agitation in home-cared older adults with dementia: evidence from 640 elders in East China

    BackgroundAgitation is common among older adults with dementia, negatively affecting their quality of life and their caregivers’. Since home care remains the dominant approach for older adults, this study investigates the risk factors for agitation in older adults with dementia in China.MethodsWe perform a cross-sectional study of home-cared older adults with dementia in Ningbo, China, using 2020 data. We use a self-made questionnaire to investigate the risks of agitated behavior and its related factors. We perform descriptive, univariate, and regression analyses.FindingsWe address 640 older Chinese adults; 42.8% of the sample exhibits one or more agitated behaviors. We find that basic health issues, such as activities of daily living (ADL), family support issues, such as Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) scale and Family APGAR Questionnaire (APGAR), and behavioral awareness issues, such as fall and scald, significantly influence the occurrence of agitation behaviors (p < 0.05). Older adults with severe ADL disorder (b = 6.835, β = 0.196, p < 0.001), ZBI score of 67.00–88.0 (b = 10.212, β = 0.248, p = 0.005), severe APGAR disorder (b = 3.699, β = 0.100, p = 0.012) and a history of fall (b = 9.311, β = 0.199, P = <0.001) or scald (b = 9.288, β = 0.125, p = 0.002) are more likely to exhibit agitated behaviors.InterpretationAgitated behavior in home-cared older adults with dementia are diverse and related to mental state, family support, and behavioral awareness issues. Caregivers, often family members, should be attentive to the needs of dementia patients and take active and effective measures to improve their quality of life. They should be aware of the causes and triggers of agitated behavior and take steps to reduce its occurrence

    Differential expression of sPLA2 following spinal cord injury and a functional role for sPLA2-IIA in mediating oligodendrocyte death

    After the initial mechanical insult of spinal cord injury (SCI), secondary mediators propagate a massive loss of oligodendrocytes. We previously showed that following SCI both the total phospholipase activity and cytosolic PLA(2)-IV alpha protein expression increased. However, the expression of secreted isoforms of PLA(2) (sPLA(2)) and their possible roles in oligodendrocyte death following SCI remained unclear. Here we report that mRNAs extracted 15 min, 4 h, 1 day, or 1 month after cervical SCI show marked upregulation of sPLA(2)-IIA and IIE at 4 h after injury. In contrast, SCI induced down regulation of sPLA(2)-X, and no change in sPLA(2)-IB, IIC, V, and XIIA expression. At the lesion site, sPLA(2)-IIA and IIE expression were localized to oligodendrocytes. Recombinant human sPLA(2)-IIA (0.01, 0.1, or 2 microM) induced a dose-dependent cytotoxicity in differentiated adult oligodendrocyte precursor cells but not primary astrocytes or Schwann cells in vitro. Most importantly, pretreatment with S3319, a sPLA(2)-IIA inhibitor, before a 30 min H(2)O(2) injury (1 or 10 mM) significantly reduced oligodendrocyte cell death at 48 h. Similarly, pretreatment with S3319 before injury with IL-1 beta and TNFalpha prevented cell death and loss of oligodendrocyte processes at 72 h. Collectively, these findings suggest that sPLA(2)-IIA and IIE are increased following SCI, that increased sPLA(2)-IIA can be cytotoxic to oligodendrocytes, and that in vitro blockade of sPLA(2) can create sparing of oligodendrocytes in two distinct injury models. Therefore, sPLA(2)-IIA may be an important mediator of oligodendrocyte death and a novel target for therapeutic intervention following SCI

    The change in blood glucose levels in tuberculosis patients before and during anti-tuberculosis treatment in China.

    OBJECTIVE: We aimed to observe (i) changes in fasting blood glucose (FBG) in tuberculosis (TB) patients before and during anti-TB treatment, (ii) whether FBG levels were stable or unstable and (iii) baseline characteristics associated with an unstable FBG. METHOD: TB patients consecutively attended six clinics or hospitals. FBG measurements were made at months 0, 2 and 6. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Of 232 patients without diabetes mellitus (DM) whose initial FBG < 6.1 mmol/L, over 90% maintained FBG < 6.1 mmol/L during treatment and no patient developed DM. Of 17 patients without DM and initial FBG between 6.1 and 6.9 mmol/L, over half had FBG < 6.1 mmol/L during treatment and no patient had DM at the end of treatment. Eight DM patients with already known DM had their FBG controlled at < 7.0 mmol/L during treatment. There were 13 DM patients newly diagnosed with FBG ≥ 7.0 mmol/L, and 69% continued to have FBG ≥ 7.0 mmol/L. After adjustment for confounding, the odds for an unstable FBG were higher for HIV-positive status, already having DM, smoking and coming to hospitals rather than clinics. CONCLUSION: TB patients who do not have DM based on FBG measurements do not develop DM during anti-TB treatment. Those newly diagnosed with DM on screening in general maintain their DM status with high FBG and need to be better managed

    Assessing the relationship between levator palpebrae superioris and thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy using the Dixon-T2WI sequence

    BackgroundThe current clinical practice lacks sufficient objective indicators for evaluating thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). This study aims to quantitatively assess TAO by evaluating levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) using Dixon-T2WI.MethodsThe retrospective study included 231 eyes (119 patients) in the TAO group and 78 eyes (39 volunteers) in the normal group. Dixon-T2WI provided data on maximum thickness of LPS (LPS_T) and signal intensity ratio (LPS_SIR) between the muscle and ipsilateral brain white matter. TAO diagnosis and assessment of its activity and severity were quantitatively determined using LPS_T and LPS_SIR.ResultsIn the TAO group, LPS_T and LPS_SIR were higher than those in the normal group (p &lt; 2.2e-16). The upper lid retraction (ULR) ≥ 2 mm group exhibited higher LPS_T and LPS_SIR compared to the ULR &lt; 2 mm and normal groups. Optimal diagnostic performance was achieved with an AUC of 0.91 for LPS_T (cutoff: 1.505 mm) and 0.81 for LPS_SIR (cutoff: 1.170). LPS_T (p = 2.8e-07) and LPS_SIR (p = 3.9e-12) in the active phase were higher than in the inactive phase. LPS_T and LPS_SIR showed differences among the mild, moderate-to-severe, and sight-threatening groups (p &lt; 0.05). ROC showed an AUC of 0.70 for LPS_T (cutoff: 2.095 mm) in judging the active phase, and 0.78 for LPS_SIR (cutoff: 1.129). For judging the moderate-to-severe and above, AUC was 0.76 for LPS_T (cutoff: 2.095 mm) and 0.78 for LPS_SIR (cutoff: 1.197).ConclusionThe maximum thickness and SIR of LPS provide imaging indicators for assisting in the diagnosis and quantitative evaluation of TAO
