    Qualitative Action Recognition by Wireless Radio Signals in Human–Machine Systems

    Human-machine systems required a deep understanding of human behaviors. Most existing research on action recognition has focused on discriminating between different actions, however, the quality of executing an action has received little attention thus far. In this paper, we study the quality assessment of driving behaviors and present WiQ, a system to assess the quality of actions based on radio signals. This system includes three key components, a deep neural network based learning engine to extract the quality information from the changes of signal strength, a gradient-based method to detect the signal boundary for an individual action, and an activity-based fusion policy to improve the recognition performance in a noisy environment. By using the quality information, WiQ can differentiate a triple body status with an accuracy of 97%, whereas for identification among 15 drivers, the average accuracy is 88%. Our results show that, via dedicated analysis of radio signals, a fine-grained action characterization can be achieved, which can facilitate a large variety of applications, such as smart driving assistants

    A novel and stable "two-hit" acute lung injury model induced by oleic acid in piglets

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Children are susceptible to pulmonary injury, and acute lung injury (ALI) often results in a high mortality and financial cost in pediatric patients. Evidence has showed that oleic acid (OA) plays an important role in ALI. Therefore, it has special significance to study ALI in pediatric patients by using OA-induced animal models. Unfortunately, the animal model hs a high mortality due to hemodynamic instability. The aim of this study was to establish a novel hemodynamically stable OA-induced ALI model in piglets with two hits.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>18 Chinese mini-piglets were randomized into three groups: group C (received saline-ethanol solution), group T (received OA-ethanol solution in routine administration manner) and group H (received OA-ethanol solution in two-hit manner). Hemodynamic and pulmonary function data were measured. Histopathological assessments were performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two piglets in group T died of radical decline of systemic blood pressure. Group T showed more drastic hemodynamic changes than group H especially during the period of 5 to 30 minutes after OA administration. Both Group T and group H all produced severe lung injury, while group C had no significant pathologic changes. OA-induced hypotension might be caused by pulmonary hypertension rather than comprised left ventricular function.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>OA leads to severe pulmonary hypertension which results in hemodynamic fluctuation in OA-induced ALI model. It is the first report on hemodynamic stable ALI animal model in piglets using two-hit method. The two-hit ALI animal model fulfils the ALI criteria and has the following characteristics: hemodynamic stability, stable damage to gas exchange and comparability with pediatric patients in body weight and corresponding age. The two-hit ALI animal model can be used to study the basic mechanism and the therapeutic strategies for pediatric ALI.</p

    Heavy metal and nutrient concentrations in top- and sub-soils of greenhouses and arable fields in East China – Effects of cultivation years, management, and shelter

    Although greenhouse vegetable production in China is rapidly changing, consumers are concerned about food quality and safety. Studies have shown that greenhouse soils are highly eutrophicated and potentially contaminated by heavy metals. However, to date, no regional study has assessed whether greenhouse soils differ significantly in their heavy metal and nutrient loads compared to adjacent arable land. Our study was conducted in Shouguang County, a key region of greenhouse vegetable production in China. Soil samples down to soil depths of 3 m were taken from 60 greenhouse vegetable fields of three different ages (5, 10, and 20 years) and from 20 adjacent arable fields to analyze the concentrations of heavy metals, nutrients, and soil physio-chemical parameters. A comparison of greenhouse soils with adjacent arable fields revealed that for greenhouses, (a) micro (heavy metals: Cu, Zn, and Mn) and macronutrients (Nmin, Olsen-P, available K) were significantly higher by a factor of about five, (b) N:P:K ratios were significantly imbalanced towards P and K, and (c) topsoil (0–30 cm) concentrations of the above-mentioned micro- and macronutrients increased with years of vegetable cultivation. In contrast, the soil concentrations of the heavy metals Cr and Pb were lower in greenhouse soils. Heavy metal concentrations did not vary significantly with soil depth, except for the micronutrients Cu and Zn, which were between 1- and 3-fold higher in the topsoil (0–30 cm) than in the subsoil (30–300 cm). The Nemerow pollution index (PN) was 0.37, which was below the recommended environmental threshold value (PN < 1). Structural equation model analysis revealed that soil nutrient concentrations in greenhouse soils are directly related to the input of fertilizers and agrochemicals. Lower values of soil Pb and Cr concentrations in greenhouses were due to the sheltering effect of the greenhouse roof, which protected soils from atmospheric deposition due to emissions from nearby industrial complexes

    A large dumbbell glossopharyngeal schwannoma involving the vagus nerve: a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Schwannoma arising from the glossopharyngeal nerve is a rare intracranial tumor. Fewer than 40 cases have been reported. Accurate pre-operative diagnosis and optimal treatment are still difficult.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present one case of schwannoma originating from the ninth cranial nerve with palsies of the trigeminal nerve, facial-acoustic nerve complex, and vagus nerve in addition to ninth nerve dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging showed tumors located in the cerebellopontine angle with extracranial extension via the jugular foramen, with evident enhancement on post-contrast scan. Surgical management single-staged with the help of gamma knife radiosurgery achieved total removal.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Glossopharyngeal schwannoma is devoid of clinical symptoms and neurological signs. High resolution magnetic resonance imaging may play a key role as an accurate diagnostic tool. A favorable option of approach and appropriate planning of surgical strategy should be the goal of operation for this benign tumor.</p

    Research on energy sharing between distribution network and multiple systems based on the mixed game strategy and water-electric-gas integrated energy complementation

    Introduction: It is significant for energy sharing to study the complementary utilization of multiple energy sources, such as water, electricity and gas, and the interaction among multiple stakeholders.Methods: We propose a research on energy sharing between distribution network and multiple systems based on the mixed game strategy and water-electric-gas integrated energy complementation. Firstly, this paper describes the relationship and functions of all stakeholders under the research framework, and establishes the mathematical model of each unit in the water-electric-gas complementary IES. Secondly, the internal roles are layered based on the relationship between stakeholders in the system. Then a non-cooperative game model for the distribution network operator and multiple subsystems is established according to the theory of Stackelberg game, and a cooperative game model for multiple subsystems is further established based on the theory of Nash bargaining. In the next step, the complexity of the problem is analyzed, followed by the description of the specific algorithm and process of solving the model.Results: Finally, the results of example analysis show that the model proposed in this paper not only balances the interests of stakeholders at the upper and lower layers of the system, but also allocates the interests of multiple subsystems at the lower layer.Discussion: Thus effectively improving the energy utilization of the system

    Caloric restriction delays age-related muscle atrophy by inhibiting 11β−HSD1 to promote the differentiation of muscle stem cells

    IntroductionCalorie restriction (CR) is an important direction for the delay of sarcopenia in elderly individuals. However, the specific mechanisms of CR against aging are still unclear.MethodsIn this study, we used a CR model of elderly mice with muscle-specific 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11β-HSD1) knockout mice and 11β-HSD1 overexpression mice to confirm that CR can delay muscle aging by inhibiting 11β-HSD1 which can transform inactive GC(cortisone) into active GC(cortisol). The ability of self-proliferation and differentiation into muscle fibers of these mouse muscle stem cells (MuSCs) was observed in vitro. Additionally, the mitochondrial function and mitochondrial ATP production capacity of MuSCs were measured by mitochondrial oxygen consumption.ResultsIt was found that the 11β-HSD1 expression level was increased in age-related muscle atrophy. Overexpression of 11β-HSD1 led to muscle atrophy in young mice, and 11β-HSD1 knockout rescued age-related muscle atrophy. Moreover, CR in aged mice reduced the local effective concentration of glucocorticoid (GC) through 11β-HSD1, thereby promoting the mitochondrial function and differentiation ability of MuSCs.ConclusionsTogether, our findings highlight promising sarcopenia protection with 40% CR in older ages. Furthermore, we speculated that targeting an 11β-HSD1-dependent metabolic pathway may represent a novel strategy for developing therapeutics against age-related muscle atrophy

    Detection of the dominant pathogens in diarrheal calves of Ningxia, China in 2021–2022

    IntroductionCalf diarrhea is a complex disease that has long been an unsolved problem in the cattle industry. Ningxia is at the forefront of China in the scale of cattle breeding, and calf diarrhea gravely restricts the development of Ningxia's cattle industry.MethodsFrom July 2021 to May 2022, we collected diarrhea stool samples from calves aged 1–103 days from 23 farms in five cities in Ningxia, and performed PCR using specific primers for 15 major reported pathogens of calf diarrhea, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The effect of different seasons on the occurrence of diarrhea in calves was explored, the respective epidemic pathogens in different seasons were screened, and more detailed epidemiological investigations were carried out in Yinchuan and Wuzhong. In addition, we analyzed the relationship between different ages, river distributions and pathogen prevalence.ResultsEventually, 10 pathogens were detected, of which 9 pathogens were pathogenic and 1 pathogen was non-pathogenic. The pathogens with the highest detection rate were Cryptosporidium (50.46%), Bovine rotavirus (BRV) (23.18%), Escherichia coli (E. coli) K99 (20.00%), and Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) (11.82%). The remaining pathogens such as Coccidia (6.90%), Bovine Astrovirus (BoAstV) (5.46%), Bovine Torovirus (BToV) (4.09%), and Bovine Kobuvirus (BKoV) (3.18%) primarily existed in the form of mixed infection.DiscussionThe analysis showed that different cities in Ningxia have different pathogens responsible for diarrhea, with Cryptosporidium and BRV being the most important pathogens responsible for diarrhea in calves in all cities. Control measures against those pathogens should be enforced to effectively prevent diarrhea in calves in China

    A simple all-fiber comb filter based on the combined effect of multimode interference and Mach-Zehnder interferometer

    A polarization-dependent all-fiber comb filter based on a combination effect of multimode interference and Mach-Zehnder interferometer was proposed and demonstrated. The comb filter was composed with a short section of multimode fiber (MMF) fusion spliced with a conventional single mode fiber on the one side and a short section of a different type of optical fiber on the other side. The second type of optical fiber is spliced to the MMF with a properly designed misalignment. Different types and lengths of fibers were used to investigate the influence of fiber types and lengths on the performance of the comb filter. Experimentally, several comb filters with free spectral range (FSR) values ranging from 0.236 to 1.524 nm were achieved. The extinction ratio of the comb filter can be adjusted from 6 to 11.1 dB by varying polarization states of the input light, while maintaining the FSR unchanged. The proposed comb filter has the potential to be used in optical dense wavelength division multiplexing communication systems
