    On the impact of connected automated vehicles in freeway work zones: A cooperative cellular automata model based approach

    PurposeFreeway work zones have been traffic bottlenecks that lead to a series of problems, including long travel time, high-speed variation, driver’s dissatisfaction and traffic congestion. This research aims to develop a collaborative component of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) to alleviate negative effects caused by work zones. Design/methodology/approach\ua0The proposed cooperative component is incorporated in a cellular automata model to examine how and to what scale CAVs can help in improving traffic operations. Findings\ua0Simulation results show that, with the proposed component and penetration of CAVs, the average performances (travel time, safety and emission) can all be improved and the stochasticity of performances will be minimized too. Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first research that develops a cooperative mechanism of CAVs to improve work zone performance

    miRNAs as Regulators of Antidiabetic Effects of Fucoidans

    open access articleDiabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease with a high mortality rate worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), and other small noncoding RNAs, serve as endogenous gene regulators through binding to specific sequences in RNA and modifying gene expression toward up- or down-regulation. miRNAs have become compelling therapeutic targets and play crucial roles in regulating the process of insulin resistance. Fucoidan has shown potential function as an a-amylase inhibitor, which may be beneficial in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In recent years, many studies on fucoidan focused on the decrease in blood glucose levels caused by ingesting low-glucose food or glucose-lowering components. However, the importance of miRNAs as regulators of antidiabetic effects was rarely recognized. Hence, this review emphasizes the antidiabetic mechanisms of fucoidan through regulation of miRNAs. Fucoidan exerts a vital antidiabetic effect by regulation of miRNA expression and thus provides a novel biological target for future research

    Trefoil Factor 3, Cholinesterase and Homocysteine: Potential Predictors for Parkinson\u27s Disease Dementia and Vascular Parkinsonism Dementia in Advanced Stage

    Trefoil factor 3 (TFF3), cholinesterase activity (ChE activity) and homocysteine (Hcy) play critical roles in modulating recognition, learning and memory in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson\u27s disease dementia (PDD) and vascular parkinsonism with dementia (VPD). However, whether they can be used as reliable predictors to evaluate the severity and progression of PDD and VPD remains largely unknown. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study that included 92 patients with PDD, 82 patients with VPD and 80 healthy controls. Serum levels of TFF3, ChE activity and Hcy were measured. Several scales were used to rate the severity of PDD and VPD. Receivers operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to map the diagnostic accuracy of PDD and VPD patients compared to healthy subjects. RESULTS: Compared with healthy subjects, the serum levels of TFF3 and ChE activity were lower, while Hcy was higher in the PDD and VPD patients. These findings were especially prominent in male patients. The three biomarkers displayed differences between PDD and VPD sub-groups based on genders and UPDRS (III) scores\u27 distribution. Interestingly, these increased serum Hcy levels were significantly and inversely correlated with decreased TFF3/ChE activity levels. There were significant correlations between TFF3/ChE activity/Hcy levels and PDD/VPD severities, including motor dysfunction, declining cognition and mood/gastrointestinal symptoms. Additionally, ROC curves for the combination of TFF3, ChE activity and Hcy showed potential diagnostic value in discriminating PDD and VPD patients from healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that serum TFF3, ChE activity and Hcy levels may underlie the pathophysiological mechanisms of PDD and VPD. As the race to find biomarkers or predictors for these diseases intensifies, a better understanding of the roles of TFF3, ChE activity and Hcy may yield insights into the pathogenesis of PDD and VPD

    Ultrasonic investigation of the Kondo semimetal CeBi

    We report the elastic properties of the Kondo semimetal CeBi by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements at zero magnetic field. Clear elastic softening is found in bulk modulus CBC_B below 60\sim 60 K. Such a softening in CBC_B, in addition to the anomalous temperature dependent Poisson's ratio, is hardly attributable to multipolar response for stable localized 4f4f orbital, but can be well described by a two-band model arising from the hybridization between conduction- and 4f4f- electrons. These results probably are consequences of the valence fluctuations in this Kondo semimetal as originally suggested by a Fermi-surface expansion observed in a previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study [P.     A rapid and nondestructive method to determine the distribution map of protein, carbohydrate and sialic acid on Edible bird’s nest by hyper-spectral imaging and chemometrics

    Edible bird’s nest (EBN) is a precious functional food in Southeast Asia. A rapid and nondestructive method for determining the distribution map of protein content (PC), carbohydrate content (CC) and sialic acid content (SAC) on EBN sample was proposed. Firstly, 60 EBNs were used for hyperspectral image acquisition, and components content (PC, CC and SAC) were determined by chemical analytical methods. Secondly, the spectral signals of EBN hyperspectral image and EBN components content were used to build calibration models. Thirdly, spectra of each pixel in EBN hyperspectral image were extracted, and these spectra were substituted in the calibration models to predict the PC, CC and SAC of each pixel in the EBN image, so the visual distribution maps of PC, CC and SAC on the whole EBN were obtained. It is the first time to show the distribution tendency of PC, CC and SAC on the whole EBN sample

    Contra-Directional Expression of Serum Homocysteine and Uric Acid as Important Biomarkers of Multiple System Atrophy Severity: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Aims. There is evidence suggesting that inflammatory responses play a critical role in the pathogenesis of multiple system atrophy (MSA). Whether inflammatory mediators can be used as reliable biomarkers to detect the severity and progression of MSA remains largely unknown. Methods. We performed a cross-sectional study that included 47 patients with MSA and 50 healthy age-matched controls. Serum levels of homocysteine (Hcy), uric acid (UA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. These levels positively correlated with the severity of MSA, based on both motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). Several scales were used to rate the severity of MSA, including the Unified multiple system atrophy rating scale (UMSARS), Parkinson’s disease sleep scale (PDSS), Non-motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS), the Schwab & England Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADL), Webster Scale, modified Hoehn and Yahr staging scale (H&Y), and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves was applied to map the diagnostic accuracy of MSA against healthy subjects. Results. Compared with healthy subjects, we found that serum Hcy was higher, UA was lower, and CRP levels were unchanged in MSA patients. These findings were especially prominent in male patients. No significant differences of serum Hcy and UA were observed between patients of MSA and PD. Interestingly, there was a significant correlation between Hcy levels and MSA severity such as movement dysfunction, declined cognition, and cardiovascular symptoms. Additionally, the ROC curve for the combination of Hcy and UA (AUC 0.736) showed potential diagnostic value in discriminating MSA from healthy subjects. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that the inflammatory mediators Hcy and UA may play important roles in the pathogenesis of MSA. The measurement of serum Hcy and UA levels could then be a useful tool to accurately distinguish MSA from healthy subjects

    Using multi-tissue transcriptome-wide association study to identify candidate susceptibility genes for respiratory infectious diseases

    Objective: We explore the candidate susceptibility genes for influenza A virus (IAV), measles, rubella, and mumps and their underlying biological mechanisms.Methods: We downloaded the genome-wide association study summary data of four virus-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) level data sets (anti-IAV IgG, anti-measles IgG, anti-rubella IgG, and anti-mumps virus IgG levels) and integrated them with reference models of three potential tissues from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project, namely, whole blood, lung, and transformed fibroblast cells, to identify genes whose expression is predicted to be associated with IAV, measles, mumps, and rubella.Results: We identified 19 significant genes (ULK4, AC010132.11, SURF1, NIPAL2, TRAP1, TAF1C, AC000078.5, RP4-639F20.1, RMDN2, ATP1B3, SRSF12, RP11-477D19.2, TFB1M, XXyac-YX65C7_A.2, TAF1C, PCGF2, and BNIP1) associated with IAV at a Bonferroni-corrected threshold of p < 0.05; 14 significant genes (SOAT1, COLGALT2, AC021860.1, HCG11, METTL21B, MRPL10, GSTM4, PAQR6, RP11-617D20.1, SNX8, METTL21B, ANKRD27, CBWD2, and TSFM) associated with measles at a Bonferroni-corrected threshold of p < 0.05; 15 significant genes (MTOR, LAMC1, TRIM38, U91328.21, POLR2J, SCRN2, Smpd4, UBN1, CNTROB, SCRN2, HOXB-AS1, SLC14A1, AC007566.10, AC093668.2, and CPD) associated with mumps at a Bonferroni-corrected threshold of p < 0.05; and 13 significant genes (JAGN1, RRP12, RP11-452K12.7, CASP7, AP3S2, IL17RC, FAM86HP, AMACR, RRP12, PPP2R1B, C11orf1, DLAT, and TMEM117) associated with rubella at a Bonferroni-corrected threshold of p < 0.05.Conclusions: We have identified several candidate genes for IAV, measles, mumps, and rubella in multiple tissues. Our research may further our understanding of the pathogenesis of infectious respiratory diseases
