    From the Other to the Master Narrative : the Chinese Journey of the Frankfurt School

    In their article, From the \u27Other\u27 to the \u27Master Narrative\u27: The Chinese Journey of the Frankfurt School, Guohua Zhu and Xiangchun Meng discuss the Chinese reception of Frankfurt School and the Maoist historical context. Chinese scholars take the narrow view of the Frankfurt School theories as a depoliticized instrument to explain Chinese practice, particularly in the realm of mass culture. Furthermore, the Frankfurt School has encountered the powerful political and ideological legacy of Maoism, which not only dictates instrumentalist view, but also predisposes to a nationalistic attitude that pits Chinese exceptionalism against universalism, including the Frankfurt School and other western Marxist theories. It is thus imperative to disentangle the complex relationship of Critical Theory and Maoism in China. Recontexualizing the broader history of Chinese reception and response to western theories and knowledge will help renew conversations with the West in humanities and social sciences

    A feasible and effective self-assembly method to synthesize different scale coordination polymers in highly dilute solution (from nanocrystals to microcrystals and to bulk crystals) without any blocking agent has been described. The growth of crystalline particles was controlled by removing the particles at different reaction times to interrupt the growth at the desired size. The nano and microscale particles show better catalytic conversions and selectivities in the hydroxylation of phenols than the bulk crystals

    Peritoneal metastatic adenocarcinoma possibly due to a gastric duplication cyst: a case report and literature review

    BACKGROUND: Gastric duplication cysts are rare congenital abnormalities, and malignant transformation of these duplications is also thought to be rare. CASE PRESENTATION: During a routine health checkup, a 28-year-old man underwent abdominal sonography followed by computed tomography (CT) with contrast agent, which revealed a cystic lesion with no enhancement. Laparoscopic surgery showed a 10 × 10 cm cyst adhering to the gastric corpus. However, attempts to remove the lesion en bloc were unsuccessful, and the ruptured cyst had contaminated the peritoneal cavity. Gastric duplication was diagnosed from microscopic examination of the cyst. Seven months later, the patient suffered a progressive increase in ascites, and repeated cytological analysis showed small nests of adenocarcinoma cells, with primary lesion unknown. Diagnostic laparoscopy showed multiple white nodules scattered over the surface of the liver, greater omentum, and peritoneum. Biopsy of the omental nodules confirmed adenocarcinoma, while carcinomatosis was diagnosed in the peritoneum. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical presentation and chronological developments indicated that the malignancy probably originated from the gastric duplication cyst. This case highlights the importance of accurate preoperative diagnosis and optimal surgical management for gastric duplication as well as considering the potential existence of malignant transformation during surgical evaluation of adult patients with gastric duplication cysts

    An Unexpected Particle Oscillation for Electrophoresis in Viscoelastic Fluids Through a Microchannel Constriction

    Electrophoresis plays an important role in many applications, which, however, has so far been extensively studied in Newtonian fluids only. This work presents the first experimental investigation of particle electrophoresis in viscoelastic polyethylene oxide (PEO) solutions through a microchannel constriction under pure DC electric fields. An oscillatory particle motion is observed in the constriction region, which is distinctly different from the particle behavior in a polymer-free Newtonian fluid. This stream-wise particle oscillation continues until a sufficient number of particles form a chain to pass through the constriction completely. It is speculated that such an unexpected particle oscillating phenomenon is a consequence of the competition between electrokinetic force and viscoelastic force induced in the constriction. The electric field magnitude, particle size, and PEO concentration are all found to positively affect this viscoelasticity-related particle oscillation due to their respective influences on the two forces.     ï»żTaxonomic and phylogenetic characterisations of six species of Pleosporales (in Didymosphaeriaceae, Roussoellaceae and Nigrogranaceae) from China

    Pleosporales comprise a diverse group of fungi with a global distribution and significant ecological importance. A survey on Pleosporales (in Didymosphaeriaceae, Roussoellaceae and Nigrogranaceae) in Guizhou Province, China, was conducted. Specimens were identified, based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses using a dataset composed of ITS, LSU, SSU, tef1 and rpb2 loci. Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian analyses were performed. As a result, three new species (Neokalmusia karka, Nigrograna schinifolium and N. trachycarpus) have been discovered, along with two new records for China (Roussoella neopustulans and R. doimaesalongensis) and a known species (Roussoella pseudohysterioides). Morphologically similar species and phylogenetically close taxa are compared and discussed. This study provides detailed information and descriptions of all newly-identified taxa

    Four new species, Xynobius azonius sp. nov., X. brevifemora sp. nov., X. duoferus sp. nov., and X. stipitoides sp. nov., are described and illustrated, and one species X. geniculatus (Thomson, 1895) is newly reported from South Korea. Xynobius geniculatus (Thomson, 1895) is redescribed and illustrated, and a new combination, Xynobius (Stigmatopoea) cubitalis (Fischer, 1959), comb. nov. is suggested. An identification key to the Xynobius species known from South Korea is provided

    Selective hydrogenation of nitrostyrene to aminostyrene over Pt/TiO2 catalysts : Effects of pressurized carbon dioxide and catalyst preparation conditions

    The present work has studied the influence of CO2 pressurization on the hydrogenation of nitrostyrene (NS) using Pt/TiO2. With CO2 pressurization up to 12 MPa (CO2-dissolved expanded liquid (CXL) phase), the over-all reaction rate and the selectivity to aminostyrene (AS) increased. At higher CO2 pressures where all NB dissolved in scCO2 (scCO2-homogeneous phase), both of them decreased with increasing the CO2 pressure. The phase behavior was an important factor for the present reaction system. It was also found that the presence of pressurized CO2 gave higher selectivity to AS than in its absence at any conversion level. This was ascribed to retardation effects of dense phase CO2 on the hydrogenation of AS to ethylaniline. Competitive adsorption of nitro and vinyl groups was suggested to determine the product selectivity. FTIR measurements showed that the pressurized CO2 lowers the reactivity of the nitro group, and this effect is stronger in scCO2-homogeneous phase than in CXL phase, resulting in the lower AS selectivity in the former phase. Lower Pt loadings and higher catalyst reduction temperatures gave Pt/TiO2 catalysts more selective for the AS formation. FTIR measurements of adsorbed CO over the catalysts suggested that the presence of less-coordinated Pt atoms on edge, corner and kink sites was significant for the selective hydrogenation of NS to AS
