    Reconstructive types effect the prognosis of patients with tumors in the central and nipple portion of breast cancer? An analysis based on SEER database

    IntroductionThe impact of different types of reconstruction, including tissue reconstruction, implant reconstruction and combined reconstruction, on patient survival were not illustrated completely. We tried to investigate the impact of patient survival between different types of reconstruction.MethodsWe enrolled 6271 patients with tumors in the central and nipple portion of breast cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Factors associated with survival were identified by Cox regression analyses. The mortality rates per 1,000 person-years were calculated and compared. Survival curves were produced by Kaplan-Meier analyses using log-rank tests and cox proportional hazards regression quantified the risk of survival.ResultsReconstructive types, region, insurance, race, marial status, grade, stage, ER status, PR status, HER-2 status and chemotherapy were significant prognostic factors associated with breast cancer-specific survival. The breast cancer mortality rates per 1,000 person-years for patients with tissue, implant and combined group were 26.01,21.54 and 19.83 which showed a downward trend. The HR of implant and combined reconstruction adjusted for demographic, pathological, and therapeutic data was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.67-1.00, p=0.052) and 0.73(95% CI:0.55-0.97, p=0.03) compared with tissue reconstruction.ConclusionBreast cancer-related mortality between implant reconstruction and autologous tissue reconstruction showed no significantly different, but the risk of BCSS of compound reconstruction was lower than tissue reconstruction

    Regional innovation and spillover effects of foreign direct investment in China: a threshold approach

    Using a data set on twenty-nine Chinese provinces for the period 1985–2008, this paper establishes a threshold model to analyse the relationship between spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) and regional innovation in China. There is clear evidence of double-threshold effects of regional innovation on productivity spillovers from FDI. Specifically, only when the level of regional innovation reaches the minimum innovation threshold will FDI in the region begin to produce positive productivity spillovers. Furthermore, positive productivity spillovers from FDI will be substantial only when the level of regional innovation attains a higher threshold. The double threshold divides Chinese provinces into three super-regions in terms of innovation, with most provinces positioned within the middle-level innovation super-region. Policy implications are discussed

    CAMK2N1 inhibits prostate cancer progression through androgen receptor-dependent signaling.

    Castration resistance is a major obstacle to hormonal therapy for prostate cancer patients. Although androgen independence of prostate cancer growth is a known contributing factor to endocrine resistance, the mechanism of androgen receptor deregulation in endocrine resistance is still poorly understood. Herein, the CAMK2N1 was shown to contribute to the human prostate cancer cell growth and survival through AR-dependent signaling. Reduced expression of CAMK2N1 was correlated to recurrence-free survival of prostate cancer patients with high levels of AR expression in their tumor. CAMK2N1 and AR signaling form an auto-regulatory negative feedback loop: CAMK2N1 expression was down-regulated by AR activation; while CAMK2N1 inhibited AR expression and transactivation through CAMKII and AKT pathways. Knockdown of CAMK2N1 in prostate cancer cells alleviated Casodex inhibition of cell growth, while re-expression of CAMK2N1 in castration-resistant cells sensitized the cells to Casodex treatment. Taken together, our findings suggest that CAMK2N1 plays a tumor suppressive role and serves as a crucial determinant of the resistance of prostate cancer to endocrine therapies

    Simultaneous Impact of the Presence of Foreign MNEs on Indigenous Firms’ Exports and Domestic Sales

    YesIncorporating the global production network approach and competitor analysis, this paper establishes an analytical framework with two hypotheses for the role of foreign multinational enterprises (FMNEs) in indigenous firms’ exports and domestic sales. First, the presence of FMNEs as a whole is likely to have a negative impact on indigenous firms’ domestic sales but a simultaneous positive impact on their exports in an emerging economy like China. Second, the presence of MNEs from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan (HMT MNEs) is more likely to generate this pattern of impact than MNEs from other countries (Other FMNEs). The FDI-led export strategy contributed to the dominance of the scenario described by the first hypothesis in China, while a higher degree of market commonality and resource similarity of HMT MNEs with that of indigenous Chinese firms than Other FMNEs leads to the second hypothesis. These novel hypotheses are tested and supported by a very large and recent firm-level panel dataset from Chinese manufacturing

    Carbonation and related behaviors of hardened cement pastes under different hydration degrees

    This paper develops a kind of molded disc samples to investigate the carbonation and related behaviors of hardened cement pastes under different previous hydration degrees. Weight and length changes of cement pastes over time are monitored during a multistep process including carbonation, drying, rewetting, and redrying. The combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is used to identify and quantify the mineral compositions of carbonated cement pastes. An exponential function between CO2 uptake capacity and hydration time of cement pastes is established, which shows that the CO2 uptake capacity of cement pastes decreases dramatically at the very beginning days of hydration and then remaining relatively stable as hydration time is prolonged. Two reasons for this finding are revealed: i) the equilibrium between the carbonation and the post-carbonation reaction of carbonation product, i.e., silica-alumina gel; ii) refining of pore structures by hydration products which hinders carbonation. A clearer zonation of carbonation areas is proposed, and the spatial distribution equations of CO2 absorption are initially established. By monitoring carbonation and drying behavior of cement pastes with different hydration ages, it is revealed that carbonation reduces drying shrinkage of cement pastes especially for early-age samples, whereas drying increases carbonation shrinkage. By investigating the water changes during the multistep process, it is found that water is little released during the carbonation of C–S–H gels.     Dancing with a giant: The effect of Wal-Mart's entry into the U.K. on the performance of European retailers

    The authors examine the value-destroying and value-enhancing effects of a giant player's foreign entry on incumbents operating in that region. They use Wal-Mart's entry into the United Kingdom, through its acquisition of Asda, as the empirical context. Drawing on the marketing, strategy, and finance literature streams, the authors develop hypotheses as to why some incumbents are negatively affected whereas others actually may benefit from the entry of a giant competitor. Their measure of performance impact is the change in shareholder value around the announcement date, which has recently been recognized as an important metric to evaluate the effectiveness of marketing actions. The authors find strong support for the conceptual model, which distinguishes between the seriousness of the threat to the incumbents and their capacity to withstand the threat. The authors validate their findings using three alternative measures of company performance: percentage growth in the incumbent retailer's sales, earnings before interest and taxes, and return on assets between 1998 (the year before the Asda takeover) and 2002 (three years after the takeover). The authors discuss various managerial implications of their results. By acting proactively, incumbents can mitigate the negative performance consequences, while maximally benefiting from the positive implications of a giant competitor's entry
