    Characterization of physico-chemical and bio-chemical compositions of selected four strawberry cultivars

    The physico-chemical and bio-chemical compositions of Hongyan, Tiangxiang, Tongzi Ι and Zhangji strawberries inChinawere analyzed. Their values were pH 3.42~3.73, titration acidity 0.63~0.79%, total soluble sugars 5.26~8.95 g/100 gfresh weight (FW), ascorbic acid 21.38~42.89 mg/100 gFW, total phenolics 235.12~444.73 mg/100 gFW, pectin 82.84~96.13 mg/100 gFW, total organic acids 874.30~1216.27 mg/100 gFW, Individual phenolic compounds other than anthocyanins 7.60~12.18 mg/100 gFW, free amino acids 13.35~32.66 mg/100 gFW, monomeric anthocyanins 4.47~47.19 mg/100gFW, antioxidant capacity of ·DPPH 14.14~18.87 and FRAP 7.97~10.54 equal to mg/100 gVc, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity 0~0.42 Abs/min, peroxidase (POD) activity 0.17~0.34 Abs/min and pectin methyl esterase (PME) activity 0.012~0.018 mL/min.     In Vivo Induction of Apoptosis by Fucoxanthin, a Marine Carotenoid, Associated with Down-Regulating STAT3/EGFR Signaling in Sarcoma 180 (S180) Xenografts-Bearing Mice

    Previous in vitro researches have showed that fucoxanthin, a natural carotenoid isolated from sargassum, can inhibit proliferation or induce apoptosis in human neuroblastoma, hepatoma, leukemia, colon carcinoma, prostate cancer or urinary bladder cancer cells. But the precise mechanism by which fucoxanthin exerts anticarcinogenic effects is not yet fully understood. In this study, we performed an in vivo study to investigate the anti-tumor effect and mechanisms of fucoxanthin on xenografted sarcoma 180 (S180) in mice. Results revealed that fucoxanthin significantly inhibited the growth of sarcoma at the dose of 50 or 100 mg/kg. TUNEL analysis showed that the number of positive cells in the fucoxanthin-treated group was higher than that in the control group. Western blotting analysis also revealed the suppressed expression of bcl-2 and enhanced expression of cleaved caspase-3 by fucoxanthin. In addition, immunohistochemistry analysis and Western blotting analysis showed that fucoxanthin significantly decreased the expressions of survivin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Most importantly, fucoxanthin inhibited the expressions of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and STAT3 and phosphorylated STAT3 proteins. These results indicated that in vivo induction of apoptosis by fucoxanthin is associated with down-regulating STAT3/EGFR signaling in S180 xenografts-bearing mice

    Comparative Study on the Effects of Four Plant Protein Sources on the Liver and Intestinal Health of Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides

    The effects of plant protein sources (PPSs) on the health of the liver and intestine of the largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, were compared to verify the potential damaging effects of dietary fiber (DF). A diet containing 55% fish meal (FM) was used as the control. The test diets contained 25% soybean meal (SBM), rapeseed meal (RSM), cottonseed meal, or peanut meal, and the FM content was decreased to 30%. The protein and lipid contents of these five diets were balanced by casein and oil. Fish were raised for 8 weeks. The fish fed the diet containing PPS showed a trend of decreasing growth and apparent digestibility coefficients. The contents of total bile acid, lipid, and collagen in the liver were increased, and the mRNA expression levels of genes encoding inflammatory factors and enzymes involved in de novo fatty acid synthesis and bile acid synthesis were upregulated. Both the lipid and collagen contents in the liver were positively correlated with the DF content in the diet significantly. Morphology and histology showed reduced liver size, hepatic steatosis, and fibrosis in fish fed diets containing PPS. The lowest hepatosomatic index was observed in fish fed the SBM diet, and the most severe damage was observed in fish fed the RSM diet. No obvious histological abnormalities were observed in the hindgut. The bile acid profile in the liver could be used to distinguish the types of PPS very well by Fisher discriminant analysis. These results indicated that 25% of each of the four PPSs in the diet exceeded the tolerance range of largemouth bass and caused liver damage, which might be mediated by bile acid. DF in PPS might be an important agent contributing to liver damage

    Grapefruit has attracted much attention as a functional fruit, of which “Cocktail” is a special variety with low acidity. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of alcoholic fermentation on the non-volatile and volatile compounds of “Cocktail” grapefruit juice. To analyze, a non-targeted metabolomics method based on UPLC-MS/MS and volatiles analysis using GC-IMS were performed. A total of 1015 phytochemicals were identified, including 296 flavonoids and 145 phenolic acids, with noticeably increasing varieties and abundance following the fermentation. Also 57 volatile compounds were detected, and alcoholic fermentation was effective in modulating aromatic profiles of grapefruit juice, with terpenes and ketones decreasing, and alcohols increasing together with esters. Citraconic acid and ethyl butanoate were the most variable non-volatile and volatile substances, respectively. The results provide a wealth of information for the study of “Cocktail” grapefruit and will serve as a valuable reference for the large-scale production of grapefruit fermented juice in the future.</p
