    ZnO nanorods for solar cells: Hydrothermal growth versus vapor deposition

    Performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on ZnO nanorods prepared by hydrothermal and vapor-deposition methods has been investigated. In spite of their inferior optical properties, DSSCs based on hydrothermally grown rods exhibit higher power conversion efficiency, which can be attributed to the higher dye adsorption. Hydrothermally grown and vapor deposited nanorods also exhibit different dependence of photovoltaic performance on the annealing conditions of the rods, indicating significant effect of the native defects on the achievable photocurrent and power conversion efficiency. Efficiency of 0.22% is obtained for both as grown hydrothermally grown nanorods and vapor deposited nanorods annealed in oxygen at 200 Β°C.     Dye-sensitized solar cells using ZnO tetrapods

    One dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructures are of interest for applications in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) since they exhibit significantly improved electron transport compared to that in porous films. However, 1D nanostructures also have a significantly lower surface area than the porous films. Thus, the achieved solar cell efficiencies are typically much lower in spite of the improved charge transport. In this work, we investigated DSSCs based on ZnO tetrapods to achieve an increased surface area compared to that of 1D nanostructures. The cell performance as a function of the tetrapod film thickness and the dye used was studied. To further increase the surface area, mixed morphologies (tetrapods with nanoparticles) were also investigated. Under optimal conditions, an AM 1.5 power conversion efficiency of ∼1.2% was achieved. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    NiOZnO light emitting diodes by solution-based growth

    Heterojunction NiOZnO light emitting diodes have been fabricated using low temperature solution-based growth methods. While negligible light emission has been obtained for the as-grown NiO film, devices with annealed NiO film exhibit room-temperature electroluminescence (EL), which was attributed to the detrimental effects of nickel oxide hydroxide in as-grown NiO layers. The device performance can be further modified by insertion of the organic layers between NiO and ZnO and the EL spectra exhibited dependence on the bias voltage. For higher bias voltages, strong UV-violet emission peak can be obtained in spite of the dominance of defect emission in the photoluminescence spectra.     Effect of annealing on the performance of CrO3/ZnO light emitting diodes

    Heterojunction CrO3/ZnO light emitting diodes have been fabricated. Their performance was investigated for different annealing temperature for ZnO nanorods. Annealing in oxygen atmosphere had significant influence on carrier concentration in the nanorods, as well as on the emission spectra of the nanorods. Surprisingly, annealing conditions, which yield the lowest band edge-to-defect emission ratio in the photoluminescence spectra, result in the highest band edge-to-defect emission ratio in the electroluminescence spectra.     Urban energy consumption and CO2 emissions in Beijing: current and future

    This paper calculates the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing over 2005–2011 in light of the Beijing’s energy balance table and the carbon emission coefficients of IPCC. Furthermore, based on a series of energy conservation planning program issued in Beijing, the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP)-BJ model is developed to study the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing’s six end-use sectors and the energy conversion sector over 2012–2030 under the BAU scenario and POL scenario. Some results are found in this research: (1) During 2005–2011, the energy consumption kept increasing, while the total CO2 emissions fluctuated obviously in 2008 and 2011. The energy structure and the industrial structure have been optimized to a certain extent. (2) If the policies are completely implemented, the POL scenario is projected to save 21.36 and 35.37 % of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions than the BAU scenario during 2012 and 2030. (3) The POL scenario presents a more optimized energy structure compared with the BAU scenario, with the decrease of coal consumption and the increase of natural gas consumption. (4) The commerce and service sector and the energy conversion sector will become the largest contributor to energy consumption and CO2 emissions, respectively. The transport sector and the industrial sector are the two most potential sectors in energy savings and carbon reduction. In terms of subscenarios, the energy conservation in transport (TEC) is the most effective one. (5) The macroparameters, such as the GDP growth rate and the industrial structure, have great influence on the urban energy consumption and carbon emissions

    The enhanced photoluminescence of zinc oxide and polyaniline coaxial nanowire arrays in anodic oxide aluminium membranes

    A novel nanomaterial, an array of zinc oxide (ZnO) and polyaniline (PANI) coaxial nanowires, was synthesized using an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane as the template. The morphology of these coaxial nanowires was observed with transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experiments on photoluminescence (PL) of coaxial nanowires and their array in AAO membrane show that the visible emission band of ZnO shifts from 530 to 400 nm for the coaxial nanowires array in AAO membrane, and to a lower wavelength (385 nm) for coaxial nanowires in NaOH solution. When compared with the PL spectrum of ZnO nanowires array in AAO membrane, an about 100 times PL enhancement was found in the PL spectrum of ZnO and PANI coaxial nanowires array in AAO membrane. The possible explanations for these two blue shifts of visible emission band of ZnO and the PL enhancement were presented

    Large-scale Synthesis of Ξ²-SiC Nanochains and Their Raman/Photoluminescence Properties

    Although the SiC/SiO2 nanochain heterojunction has been synthesized, the chained homogeneous nanostructure of SiC has not been reported before. Herein, the novel Ξ²-SiC nanochains are synthesized assisted by the AAO template. The characterized results demonstrate that the nanostructures are constructed by spheres of 25–30 nm and conjoint wires of 15–20 nm in diameters. Raman and photoluminescence measurements are used to explore the unique optical properties. A speed-alternating vapor–solid (SA-VS) growth mechanism is proposed to interpret the formation of this typical nanochains. The achieved nanochains enrich the species of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures and may hold great potential applications in nanotechnology

    The sudden change phenomenon of quantum discord

    Even if the parameters determining a system's state are varied smoothly, the behavior of quantum correlations alike to quantum discord, and of its classical counterparts, can be very peculiar, with the appearance of non-analyticities in its rate of change. Here we review this sudden change phenomenon (SCP) discussing some important points related to it: Its uncovering, interpretations, and experimental verifications, its use in the context of the emergence of the pointer basis in a quantum measurement process, its appearance and universality under Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, its theoretical and experimental investigation in some other physical scenarios, and the related phenomenon of double sudden change of trace distance discord. Several open questions are identified, and we envisage that in answering them we will gain significant further insight about the relation between the SCP and the symmetry-geometric aspects of the quantum state space.Comment: Lectures on General Quantum Correlations and their Applications, F.     Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.

    BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721

    Stress-Induced Reinstatement of Drug Seeking: 20 Years of Progress

    In human addicts, drug relapse and craving are often provoked by stress. Since 1995, this clinical scenario has been studied using a rat model of stress-induced reinstatement of drug seeking. Here, we first discuss the generality of stress-induced reinstatement to different drugs of abuse, different stressors, and different behavioral procedures. We also discuss neuropharmacological mechanisms, and brain areas and circuits controlling stress-induced reinstatement of drug seeking. We conclude by discussing results from translational human laboratory studies and clinical trials that were inspired by results from rat studies on stress-induced reinstatement. Our main conclusions are (1) The phenomenon of stress-induced reinstatement, first shown with an intermittent footshock stressor in rats trained to self-administer heroin, generalizes to other abused drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, nicotine, and alcohol, and is also observed in the conditioned place preference model in rats and mice. This phenomenon, however, is stressor specific and not all stressors induce reinstatement of drug seeking. (2) Neuropharmacological studies indicate the involvement of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), noradrenaline, dopamine, glutamate, kappa/dynorphin, and several other peptide and neurotransmitter systems in stress-induced reinstatement. Neuropharmacology and circuitry studies indicate the involvement of CRF and noradrenaline transmission in bed nucleus of stria terminalis and central amygdala, and dopamine, CRF, kappa/dynorphin, and glutamate transmission in other components of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system (ventral tegmental area, medial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and nucleus accumbens). (3) Translational human laboratory studies and a recent clinical trial study show the efficacy of alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonists in decreasing stress-induced drug craving and stress-induced initial heroin lapse
