Biaxial escape in nematics at low temperature
In the present work, we study minimizers of the Landau-de Gennes free energy
in a bounded domain . We prove that at low
temperature minimizers do not vanish, even for topologically non-trivial
boundary conditions. This is in contrast with a simplified Ginzburg-Landau
model for superconductivity studied by Bethuel, Brezis and H\'elein. Merging
this with an observation of Canevari we obtain, as a corollary, the occurence
of biaxial escape: the tensorial order parameter must become strongly biaxial
at some point in . In particular, while it is known that minimizers
cannot be purely uniaxial, we prove the much stronger and physically relevant
fact that they lie in a different homotopy class
Boundary regularity of weakly anchored harmonic maps
In this note we study the boundary regularity of minimizers of a family of
weak anchoring energies that model the states of liquid crystals. We establish
optimal boundary regularity in all dimensions In dimension
this yields full regularity at the boundary which stands in sharp contrast with
the observation of boundary defects in physics works. We also show that, in the
cases of weak and strong anchoring, regularity of minimizers is inherited from
that of their corresponding limit problems.The analysis rests in a crucial
manner on the fact that the surface and Dirichlet energies scale differently;
we take advantage of this fact to reduce the problem to the known regularity of
tangent maps with zero Neumann conditions.Comment: 6 page
A symmetry breaking phenomenon for anisotropic harmonic maps from a 2D annulus into
In a two dimensional annulus ,
, we characterize -homogeneous minimizers, in
with respect to their own boundary conditions, of the
anisotropic energy \begin{equation*}
E_\delta(u)=\int_{A_\rho} |\nabla u|^2 +\delta \left( (\nabla\cdot
u)^2-(\nabla\times u)^2\right) \, dx,\quad \delta\in (-1,1). \end{equation*}
Even for a small anisotropy , we exhibit qualitative
properties very different from the isotropic case . In particular,
-homogeneous critical points of degree are
always local minimizers, but in thick annuli () they are not
minimizers: the -homogeneous symmetry is broken. One corollary is that
entire solutions to the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau system have a far-field
behavior very different from the isotropic case studied by Brezis, Merle and
Rivi\`ere. The tools we use include: ODE and variational arguments; asymptotic
expansions, interpolation inequalities and explicit computations involving
near-optimizers of these inequalities for proving that -homogeneous critical
points are not minimizers in thick annuli

New insights into peripheral nerve regeneration : The role of secretomes
Acord transformatiu CRUE-CSICNeurons of the peripheral nervous system retain the intrinsic capability of regenerate their axons after injury, by triggering a complex activation response. This genetic switch is dependent of signals from the injured axon. Schwann cells (SCs) in the distal stump of an injured nerve also play an active role in the local regulation of axonal programs, by using cell-to-cell contacts but also secreted signals, the so-called secretome. Secretome contains all the proteins (cytokines, growth factors and others) secreted by the cell and includes extracellular vesicles. The released vesicles can transport signaling proteins and both coding and regulatory RNAs, thus facilitating multilevel communication. It is nowadays clear that secretome of SCs is fundamental to both orchestrate Wallerian degeneration and to sustain axonal regeneration. Therefore, the use of secretome has emerged as an alternative to cell therapy in the field of tissue regeneration. In fact, separate components of SC secretome have been extensively used in experimental models to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration after injury. However, the most used secretome in neural therapies has been the one derived from mesenchymal (MSC) or other derived stem cells. In fact, the effects of cell therapy with MSCs have been mainly associated with the secretion of bioactive molecules and extracellular vesicles, which constitute their secretome. In this review, we first describe the role of SC and macrophage secretomes on Wallerian degeneration and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury. Then, we review the different works reported in the literature that have used secretomes of SCs or MSCs in the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries in experimental models, to highlight the use of secretomes as a promising cell-free therapeutic approach, that reduces some of the risks associated with the use of cells, such as tumor formation or rejection
HMBA Releases P-TEFb from HEXIM1 and 7SK snRNA via PI3K/Akt and Activates HIV Transcription
Hexamethylene bisacetamide (HMBA) is a potent inducer of cell differentiation and HIV production in chronically infected cells. However, its mechanism of action remains poorly defined. In this study, we demonstrate that HMBA activates transiently the PI3K/Akt pathway, which leads to the phosphorylation of HEXIM1 and the subsequent release of active positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb) from its transcriptionally inactive complex with HEXIM1 and 7SK small nuclear RNA (snRNA). As a result, P-TEFb is recruited to the HIV promoter to stimulate transcription elongation and viral production. Despite the continuous presence of HMBA, the released P-TEFb reassembles rapidly with 7SK snRNA and HEXIM1. In contrast, a mutant HEXIM1 protein that cannot be phosphorylated and released from P-TEFb and 7SK snRNA via the PI3K/Akt pathway antagonizes this HMBA-mediated induction of viral production. Thus, our studies reveal how HIV transcription is induced by HMBA and suggest how modifications in the equilibrium between active and inactive P-TEFb could contribute to cell differentiation
Novel whey-derived peptides with inhibitory effect against angiotensin-converting enzyme: in vitro effect and stability to gastrointestinal enzymes
Whey protein concentrate (WPC) was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis by proteases from the flowers of Cynara cardunculus, and the resulting angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory effect was monitored. The whole WPC hydrolysate exhibited an IC50 value of 52.9±2.9ºg/mL, whereas the associated peptide fraction with molecular weight below 3 kDa scored 23.6±1.1ºg/mL. The latter fraction was submitted to RP-HPLC, and 6 fractions were resolved that exhibited ACE-inhibitory effects. Among the various peptides found, a total of 14 were identified via sequencing with an ion-trap mass spectrometer. Eleven of these peptides were synthesized de novo – to validate their ACE-inhibitory effect, and also to ascertain their stability when exposed to simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Among them, three
novel, highly potent peptides were found, corresponding to B-lactalbumin f(16–26) – with the sequence KGYGGVSLPEW, B-lactalbumin f(97–104) with DKVGINYW, and B-lactoglobulin f(33–42) with DAQSAPLRVY; their IC50 values were as low as 0.80±0.1, 25.2±1.0 and 13.0±1.0g/mL, respectively. None of them remained stable in the presence of gastrointestinal enzymes: they were partially, or even totally hydrolyzed to smaller peptides – yet the observed ACE-inhibitory effects were not severely affected for two of those peptides.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

There is worldwide concern for the high consumption of energy from fossil fuels, the limited fossil fuel resources, the climate change and global warming and their possible long-term consequences and the population growth. Even more when energy is the main intermediate good necessary for economic growth and development in any country. This usually translates into better quality of life, and thereby, higher primary energy consumption in all sectors, transport, industry, services, household, etc. In this context, the European Union (EU) seeks to reach a balance between sustainable development, competitiveness and secure supply. The current EU energy policy is based on three interrelated pillars or basic goals: the promotion of energy efficiency, the application of greenhouse gas mitigation policies and the increase of share of energy from renewable energy sources. In this paper, a methodology for nonlinear distribution of dynamic targets is proposed and applied to EU energy policy goals.
