    Characterization of Catalan red wines by pattern recognition methods

    52 red wines produced in the Tarragona province (Catalonia, Spain), 1983 vintage, belonging to 4 different regions, namely Priorat, Terra Alta, Camp de Tarragona and Falset, have been characterized and differentiated according to their geographic origin on the basis of 17 parameters measured for each sample and 3 pattern recognition methods: Statistical Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, K-Nearest Neighbour and Linear Learning Machine. The meta! ions manganese, magnesium, iron and sodium, along with the enological parameters ethanol content, alkalinity of ashes and titratable acidity have been found as the most relevant ones in this study. The lack of varietal differences together with quite similar climatic and cultural conditions due to the geographic contiguity of the studied zones leads to a maximum prediction ability of 87 % with the Linear Learning Machine method

    Insights of microorganisms role in rice and rapeseed wastes as potential sorbents for metal removal

    Altres ajuts: acord transformatiu CRUE-CSICRice and rapeseed agricultural wastes, as nonliving biomass, are proposed for heavy metal remediation in polluted effluents (chromium, cadmium, copper and lead). The physicochemical characterization of these biomasses shows that the surface of both sorbents is negatively charged (zeta potential), the surface area of sorbents is 4.39 and 40.7 (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), and the main functional groups are carboxylic and hydroxyl (attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy). The main purpose of this work is to evaluate the insights of microorganisms associated with these nonliving biomasses in the removal of heavy metals from synthetic aqueous solutions, adjusted at pH 4.0 (as the best acidic condition for the sorption process). The isolates (Bacillus genus in rice and Escherichia, Micrococcus and Staphylococcus genus in rapeseed) remove heavy metals from mentioned solutions, mainly in consortia, with contribution percentage over than 80% of total metals. In addition, when they are present in biomass, they provide an additional metal removal effect, especially in rapeseed biomass system and with multiple heavy metals aqueous solutions: i.e. Cr(III) removal, at 4 mmol/L, increases from 70 to 100%. This knowledge makes possible the use of the nonliving biomasses with no need for any special pretreatment against the microorganisms, prior to their use as metal sorbents that implies their good feasibility for application from an economical point of view

    AGGRESCAN: a server for the prediction and evaluation of "hot spots" of aggregation in polypeptides

    BACKGROUND: Protein aggregation correlates with the development of several debilitating human disorders of growing incidence, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. On the biotechnological side, protein production is often hampered by the accumulation of recombinant proteins into aggregates. Thus, the development of methods to anticipate the aggregation properties of polypeptides is receiving increasing attention. AGGRESCAN is a web-based software for the prediction of aggregation-prone segments in protein sequences, the analysis of the effect of mutations on protein aggregation propensities and the comparison of the aggregation properties of different proteins or protein sets. RESULTS: AGGRESCAN is based on an aggregation-propensity scale for natural amino acids derived from in vivo experiments and on the assumption that short and specific sequence stretches modulate protein aggregation. The algorithm is shown to identify a series of protein fragments involved in the aggregation of disease-related proteins and to predict the effect of genetic mutations on their deposition propensities. It also provides new insights into the differential aggregation properties displayed by globular proteins, natively unfolded polypeptides, amyloidogenic proteins and proteins found in bacterial inclusion bodies. CONCLUSION: By identifying aggregation-prone segments in proteins, AGGRESCAN shall facilitate (i) the identification of possible therapeutic targets for anti-depositional strategies in conformational diseases and (ii) the anticipation of aggregation phenomena during storage or recombinant production of bioactive polypeptides or polypeptide sets

    Sir: Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis or Sweet's syndrome' is an uncommon condition characterised by fever, polymorphonuclear leucocytosis, painful erythematous cutaneous plaques, and a dense dermal infiltrate of neutrophils without vasculitis at the site of the skin lesions. Although many investigators suggest that acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is a hypersensitivity reaction,2 no defmitive cause is known. The role of the neutrophil as a cause or effect in this syndrome has not been clarified. Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is histologically and clinically mimicked by several disorders, and the differential diagnosis with pyoderma gangrenosum3 and with some reactive erythemas such as erythema multiforme2 is usually difficult

    The Internet is the most complex system ever created in human history. Therefore, its dynamics and traffic unsurprisingly take on a rich variety of complex dynamics, self-organization, and other phenomena that have been researched for years. This paper is a review of the complex dynamics of Internet traffic. Departing from normal treatises, we will take a view from both the network engineering and physics perspectives showing the strengths and weaknesses as well as insights of both.     Non-autonomous stochastic evolution equations and applications to stochastic partial differential equations

    In this paper we study the following non-autonomous stochastic evolution equation on a UMD Banach space EE with type 2, {equation}\label{eq:SEab}\tag{SE} {{aligned} dU(t) & = (A(t)U(t) + F(t,U(t))) dt + B(t,U(t)) dW_H(t), \quad t\in [0,T], U(0) & = u_0. {aligned}. {equation} Here (A(t))t[0,T](A(t))_{t\in [0,T]} are unbounded operators with domains (D(A(t)))t[0,T](D(A(t)))_{t\in [0,T]} which may be time dependent. We assume that (A(t))t[0,T](A(t))_{t\in [0,T]} satisfies the conditions of Acquistapace and Terreni. The functions FF and BB are nonlinear functions defined on certain interpolation spaces and u0Eu_0\in E is the initial value. WHW_H is a cylindrical Brownian motion on a separable Hilbert space HH. Under Lipschitz and linear growth conditions we show that there exists a unique mild solution of \eqref{eq:SEab}. Under assumptions on the interpolation spaces we extend the factorization method of Da Prato, Kwapie\'n, and Zabczyk, to obtain space-time regularity results for the solution UU of \eqref{eq:SEab}. For Hilbert spaces EE we obtain a maximal regularity result. The results improve several previous results from the literature. The theory is applied to a second order stochastic partial differential equation which has been studied by Sanz-Sol\'e and Vuillermot.     Field margins in Spain; proposal of common descriptors

    Los márgenes de los campos reciben muchas denominaciones locales (linderos, ribazos, etc.) y pueden ser motivo de preocupación para los agricultores por albergar especies arvenses que pueden devenir infestantes del cultivo. Pero su estudio también ha reflejado que pueden ser beneficiosos si albergan diversidad vegetal, la que atraería a su vez diversidad animal. Estudios recientes realizados en España arrojan resultados aparentemente contradictorios y por este motivo se realiza una descripción de la tipología de márgenes existentes en España. Se constata que las diferencias de anchura, altura y pendiente entre márgenes, el tipo de vegetación cercano, así como la intensidad de la perturbación que se ejerce en ellos son posiblemente los principales factores que explican porqué algunos márgenes albergan especies potencialmente nocivas (malas hierbas) y otros no.The field margins receive many local names and can cause trouble to farmers if they host weeds that can infest the nearby fields. But their study has shown that they be beneficial if they harbor vegetal diversity, which can attract animal diversity. Recent studies conducted in Spain show apparently contradictory results an due to this, a description of the margin types found in this country is shown in this communication. We confirm that differences in margins width, height and slope, the type of natural vegetation in the area and the disturbance intensity on the margins are probably the main factors explaining why some margins host potentially harmful plant species (weeds) and others do not

    Influence of left bundle branch block on the electrocardiographic changes induced by acute coronary artery occlusion of distinct location and duration

Objectives: We analyzed the influence of location and duration of myocardial ischemia on the ECG changes in pigs with LBBB. Methods: LBBB was acutely induced in 14 closed chest anesthetized pigs by local electrical ablation. Thereafter, episodes of 5 min catheter balloon occlusion followed by 10 min reperfusion of the left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCX), and right (RCA) coronary arteries were done sequentially in 5 pigs. Additionally, a 3-h occlusion of these arteries was performed separately in the other 9 pigs. A 15-lead ECG including leads V7 to V9 was continuously recorded. Results: Ablation induced LBBB showed QRS widening, loss of r wave in V1, and predominant R waves in V2 to V9. After 5 min of ischemia the occluded artery could be identified in all cases: the LAD by R waves and ST elevation in V1-V3; the LCX by both ST segment elevation in II, III, aVF, V7 to V9 and ST segment depression in V1 to V4; and the RCA by ST depression and new S-waves in all precordial leads. Three hours after coronary occlusion, ST segment changes declined progressively and only the LAD occlusion could be reliably recognized. Conclusion: LBBB did not mask the ECG recognition of the occluded coronary artery during the first 60 min of ischemia, but 3 h later only the LAD occlusion could be reliably identified. ST elevation in leads V7 to V9 is specific of LCX occlusion and it could be useful in the diagnosis of acute myocardial ischemia in the presence of LBBB
