Molecular dynamics simulation of multivalent ion mediated DNA attraction

All atom molecular dynamics simulations with explicit water were done to study the interaction between two parallel double-stranded DNA molecules in the presence of the multivalent counterions putrescine (2+), spermidine (3+), spermine (4+) and cobalt hexamine (3+). The inter-DNA interaction potential is obtained with the umbrella sampling technique. The attractive force is rationalized in terms of the formation of ion bridges, i.e. multivalent ions which are simultaneously bound to the two opposing DNA molecules. The lifetime of the ion bridges is short on the order of a few nanoseconds.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letter

The Radiative Decay of Vector Mesons

In this paper, radiative decays ρ0π+πγ,π0π0γ\rho^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma, \pi^0\pi^0\gamma ,ϕK+Kγ,K0K0ˉγ\phi \to K^+K^-\gamma, K^0 \bar{K^0}\gamma are studied systematically in the U(3)_L\timesU(3)_R chiral theory of mesons. The theoretical differential spectrum with respect to photon energy and branch ratio for ρ0π+πγ\rho^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma agree well with the experimental data. Differential spectrums and branch ratios for ρ0π0π0γ,ϕK+Kγ,ϕK0K0ˉγ\rho^0 \to \pi^0\pi^0\gamma, \phi \to K^+ K^-\gamma,\phi \to K^0\bar{K^0}\gamma are predicted. The process ϕK0K0ˉγ\phi \to K^0 \bar{K^0} \gamma is relevant to precision measurment of CP-violation parameters in the kaon systerm at a ϕ\phi-factory. We give a complete estimate of the branch ratio for this decay process by including scalar resonance f0,a0f_0, a_0 poles, nonresonant smooth amplitude and an abnormal parity process with KK^* pole which hasn't been considered before. We conclude that processes with intermediate KK^* do not pose a potential background problem for ϕK0Kˉ0\phi\to K^0\bar{K}^0 CP violation experiments.Comment: Revtex file, 12 pages, 9 eps figure

Structural properties, defects and structural phase transition in the ROFeM (R=La, Nd; M=As, P) materials

The structural properties of the ROFeM (R=La, Nd; M=As, P) materials have been analyzed by means of electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission-electron microscopy (TEM) and in-situ cooling TEM observations. The experimental results demonstrate that the layered ROFeM crystals often contain a variety of structural defects, such as stacking faults and small-angle boundaries. The in-situ TEM investigations reveal that, in association with the remarkable spin-density-wave (SDW) instability near 150 K, complex structural transitions can be clearly observed in both crystal symmetry and local microstructure features.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

Coordination of DC power flow controllers and AC/DC converters on optimising the delivery of wind power

The generation of offshore wind power is less predictable. This can cause the overload of offshore DC transmission system and thus requires the curtailment of wind power. To reduce the amount of wind power curtailment, a method of optimising DC power flow using DC power flow controller (DC-PFC) is proposed. The analytical expression of coordinating DC-PFCs and converters in controlling the power flow of the DC system has been created. Method has been developed to optimise the power flow of DC grids within which control setting changes automatically in different wind conditions to reduce both the power curtailment and power losses. The proposed method has been demonstrated and validated on a 9-port DC system. It is concluded that both the curtailment of wind power and power losses are effectively reduced by inserting DC-PFCs into DC grids

Maternal care in rural China: a case study from Anhui province

Abstract

Background

Studies on prenatal care in China have focused on the timing and frequency of prenatal care and relatively little information can be found on how maternal care has been organized and funded or on the actual content of the visits, especially in the less developed rural areas. This study explored maternal care in a rural county from Anhui province in terms of care organization, provision and utilization.

Methods

A total of 699 mothers of infants under one year of age were interviewed with structured questionnaires; the county health bureau officials and managers of township hospitals (n = 10) and county level hospitals (n = 2) were interviewed; the process of the maternal care services was observed by the researchers. In addition, statistics from the local government were used.

Results

The county level hospitals were well staffed and equipped and served as a referral centre for women with a high-risk pregnancy. Township hospitals had, on average, 1.7 midwives serving an average population of 15,000 people. Only 10–20% of the current costs in county level hospitals and township hospitals were funded by the local government, and women paid for delivery care. There was no systematic organized prenatal care and referrals were not mandatory. About half of the women had their first prenatal visit before the 13th gestational week, 36% had fewer than 5 prenatal visits, and about 9% had no prenatal visits. A major reason for not having prenatal care visits was that women considered it unnecessary. Most women (87%) gave birth in public health facilities, and the rest in a private clinic or at home. A total of 8% of births were delivered by caesarean section. Very few women had any postnatal visits. About half of the women received the recommended number of prenatal blood pressure and haemoglobin measurements.

Conclusion

Delivery care was better provided than both prenatal and postnatal care in the study area. Reliance on user fees gave the hospitals an incentive to put more emphasis on revenue generating activities such as delivery care instead of prenatal and postnatal care.</p

Prediction of the release process of the nitrogen-extinguishant binary mixture considering surface tension

© 2020 Springer-Verlag. The final publication is available at Springer via https://doi.org/10.1007/s10973-020-10040-2.Nitrogen used for pressurization in the extinguisher can be partially dissolved in the fire extinguishing agent. Consequently, the evolution of the dissolved nitrogen has a significant effect on the release behavior of the fire extinguishing agent in a rapid process. In this article, a new model was developed to predict the critical pressure of the nitrogen evolution and the release process of the fire extinguishing agent was described in detail. According to the Peng-Robinson (PR) equation of state and van der Waals mixing rule, the effect of the dissolved nitrogen on the surface tension of the fire extinguishant was analyzed by considering surface phase and fugacity coefficient. A method to calculate the surface tension of the liquid agent dissolved with nitrogen was proposed. The results showed that the proposed model can determine the accurate critical pressure of the evolution of the dissolved nitrogen and further evaluated whether nitrogen escapes. At different initial filling pressure, in addition, the release process of the nitrogen-extinguishant such as CF3I, FC218 (C3F8), HFC125 (C2HF5), and Halon1301 (CF3Br) was well predicted by the fluid release model when taking the surface tension and adiabatic index of the mixture into account. Compared with the previously obtained experimental data, the predictions obtained indicated that the present model can adequately describe the liquid and the gas mixture release stage in the release process of the nitrogen-extinguishant.Peer reviewe

Pairing symmetry and properties of iron-based high temperature superconductors

Pairing symmetry is important to indentify the pairing mechanism. The analysis becomes particularly timely and important for the newly discovered iron-based multi-orbital superconductors. From group theory point of view we classified all pairing matrices (in the orbital space) that carry irreducible representations of the system. The quasiparticle gap falls into three categories: full, nodal and gapless. The nodal-gap states show conventional Volovik effect even for on-site pairing. The gapless states are odd in orbital space, have a negative superfluid density and are therefore unstable. In connection to experiments we proposed possible pairing states and implications for the pairing mechanism.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 2 figures, polished versio
