    Portable Tor Router: Easily Enabling Web Privacy for Consumers

    On-line privacy is of major public concern. Unfortunately, for the average consumer, there is no simple mechanism to browse the Internet privately on multiple devices. Most available Internet privacy mechanisms are either expensive, not readily available, untrusted, or simply provide trivial information masking. We propose that the simplest, most effective and inexpensive way of gaining privacy, without sacrificing unnecessary amounts of functionality and speed, is to mask the user's IP address while also encrypting all data. We hypothesized that the Tor protocol is aptly suited to address these needs. With this in mind we implemented a Tor router using a single board computer and the open-source Tor protocol code. We found that our proposed solution was able to meet five of our six goals soon after its implementation: cost effectiveness, immediacy of privacy, simplicity of use, ease of execution, and unimpaired functionality. Our final criterion of speed was sacrificed for greater privacy but it did not fall so low as to impair day-to-day functionality. With a total cost of roughly $100.00 USD and a speed cap of around 2 Megabits per second we were able to meet our goal of an affordable, convenient, and usable solution to increased on-line privacy for the average consumer.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, IEEE ICCE Conferenc

    A vast number of children and young people globally face the harsh realities of war genocide natural disasters and other such tragedies Yet thereis limited research and few published studies that look specifically at how spirituality can be utilized as a trauma-informed approach to promote resilience and wellbeing for young people Earlier research conducted with teachers and clinicians working with traumatized children at Hagar International Cambodia indicated a convergence of trauma-informed themes In particular a religious and spiritual approach to resilience was identified as one of the key factors for children in their recovery from trauma Wyatt et al 2017 2018 Hagar is a faith-based human rights organization providing advocacy services for women and children who have survived the most extreme cases of human rights abuse Hagar International 2015 This research continues with young people who have been supported by Hagar exploring the protective factors that promote wellbeing and resilience It is expected that for these young survivors of trafficking gender-based violence and abuse that religion and spirituality may offer a framework for life that bring meaning to individuals in the face of adversity This article brings together current research and practice in an exploration of spirituality and resilience for trauma survivors in Cambodi

    80% of IT projects are known to fail. Adopting a socio-technical approach will help them to succeed in the future. The socio-technical proposition is simply that any work system comprises both a social system (including the staff, their working practices, job roles, culture and goals) and a technical system (the tools and technologies that support and enable work processes). These elements together form a single system comprising interacting parts. The technical and the social elements need to be jointly designed (or redesigned) so that they are congruent and support one another in delivering a better service. Focusing on one aspect alone is likely to be sub-optimal and wastes money (Clegg, 2008). Thus projects that just focus on the IT will almost always fail to deliver the full benefits

    Orbital ATK, in partnership with Mark ONeill LLC (MOLLC) and SolAero Technologies Corp., has developed a novel solar array platform, PFC-CTA, which provides a significant advance in performance and cost reduction compared to all currently available space solar systems. PFC refers to the Point Focus Concentration of light provided by MOLLCs thin, flat Fresnel optics. These lenses focus light to a point of approximately 100 times the intensity of the ambient light, onto a solar cell of approximately 1/25th the size of the lens. CTA stands for Compact Telescoping Array1, which is the solar array blanket structural platform originally devised by NASA and currently being advanced by Orbital ATK and partners under NASA and AFRL funding to a projected TRL 5+ by late-2018. The NASA Game Changing Development Extreme Environment Solar Power (EESP) Option 1 Phase study has enabled Orbital ATK to generate and refine component designs, perform component level and system performance analyses, and test prototype hardware of the key elements of PFC-CTA, and increased the TRL of PFC-specific technology elements to TRL ~5. Key performance metrics currently projected are as follows: Scalability from 300 kW per wing (AM0); Specific Power > 250 W/kg (BoL, AM0); Stowage Efficiency > 60 kW/m3; 5:1 margin on pointing tolerance vs. capability; >50% launched cost savings; Wide range of operability between Venus and Saturn by active and/or passive thermal management

    The macrophage inhibitory cytokine integrates AKT/PKB and MAP kinase signaling pathways in breast cancer cells

    Macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC-1), a divergent member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily, plays a role in the progression of a number of cancers, including breast, gastric, prostate and colorectal carcinomas. Serum MIC-1 levels are elevated in patients with metastatic prostate, breast and colorectal carcinomas. In vitro studies have revealed a cell type-specific role for MIC-1 in senescence and apoptosis. MIC-1 activates the survival kinase AKT/PKB in neuronal cells. Depending on the cell type, it activates or represses the MAP kinases ERK1/2. Mechanisms responsible for an increased MIC-1 expression in cancers and the consequences of MIC-1 overexpression, however, are not known. In this study, we show that AKT/PKB directly regulates the expression of MIC-1 in breast cancer cells. Sequences within −88 to +30 of the MIC-1 promoter are required for the AKT-mediated induction of MIC-1. This region of the promoter contains two SP-1 binding sites (SP-1B and SP-1C), which bind to the SP-1 and SP-3 proteins. Mutation of SP-1C but not SP-1B reduced the AKT-mediated activation of MIC-1. MIC-1 increased the basal ERK1 phosphorylation and prolonged the estrogen-stimulated ERK1 phosphorylation in MCF-7 breast cancer cells without altering the phosphorylation status of AKT/PKB. Immunohistochemistry with MIC-1 antibody revealed an MIC-1 expression within the cancer cells of primary breast cancer and in the MCF-7 xenografts. Furthermore, a limited analysis of RNA from primary breast cancers revealed an overexpression of MIC-1 in tumors, compared with normal tissues. These results suggest that AKT/PKB through MIC-1 could regulate the ERK1 activity and the MIC-1 expression levels may serve as a surrogate marker for the AKT activation in tumors

    Design of the Global Health chemical diversity library v2 for screening against infectious diseases

    There is a need for novel chemical matter for phenotypic and target-based screens to find starting points for drug discovery programmes in neglected infectious diseases and non-hormonal contraceptives that disproportionately affect Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). In some disease areas, multiple screens of corporate and other libraries have been carried out, giving rise to some valuable starting points and leading to preclinical candidates. While in other disease areas, little screening has been carried out. Much screening against pathogens has been conducted phenotypically as there are few robustly validated protein targets. However, many of the active compound series identified share the same molecular targets. To address the need for new chemical material, in this article, we describe the design of a new library designed for screening in drug discovery programmes for neglected infectious diseases. The compounds have been selected from the Enamine REAL (REadily AccessibLe) library, a virtual library which contains approximately 4.5 billion molecules. The molecules theoretically can be synthesized quickly using commercially available intermediates and building blocks. The vast majority of these have not been prepared before, so this is a source of novel compounds. In this paper, we describe the design of a diverse library of 30,000 compounds from this collection (graphical abstract). The new library will be made available to laboratories working in neglected infectious diseases, subject to a review process

    Calibration Belt for Quality-of-Care Assessment Based on Dichotomous Outcomes

    Prognostic models applied in medicine must be validated on independent samples, before their use can be recommended. The assessment of calibration, i.e., the model's ability to provide reliable predictions, is crucial in external validation studies. Besides having several shortcomings, statistical techniques such as the computation of the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) and its confidence intervals, the Hosmer–Lemeshow statistics, and the Cox calibration test, are all non-informative with respect to calibration across risk classes. Accordingly, calibration plots reporting expected versus observed outcomes across risk subsets have been used for many years. Erroneously, the points in the plot (frequently representing deciles of risk) have been connected with lines, generating false calibration curves. Here we propose a methodology to create a confidence band for the calibration curve based on a function that relates expected to observed probabilities across classes of risk. The calibration belt allows the ranges of risk to be spotted where there is a significant deviation from the ideal calibration, and the direction of the deviation to be indicated. This method thus offers a more analytical view in the assessment of quality of care, compared to other approaches
