Small-farm business development incubator for refugee farmers
Beginning farmers who also are recent U.S. immigrants face a steeper learning curve due to language and cultural challenges. This project devised training and marketing education programs for these new farmers, while making accommodations for the unique challenges they face in establishing their operations
Big Five Personality Traits and Proenvironmental Attitudes and Behaviors
The big five is the most widely used model of individual personality trait differences. This quantitative research study is being completed to discern if the big five personality traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism are correlated with pro-environmental attitudes and behaviorshttps://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/archivedposters/1098/thumbnail.jp
The implicit function theorem for Lipschitz functions and applications
The entire dissertation/thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file (which also appears in the research.pdf); a non-technical general description, or public abstract, appears in the public.pdf file.Title from title screen of research.pdf file (viewed on September 19, 2008)Thesis (M.S.) University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.The subject matter of this thesis is the classical Implicit Function Theorem and its generalizations. Dictated by practical applications, it is of interest to relax the hypothesis of the standard Implicit Function Theorem as to allow for more general classes of functions. We do so by analyzing this situation in the context of the class of Lipschitz Functions. We provide several proofs, as well as applications.Includes bibliographical reference
Feedback : best practices for effectiveness
The focus of this paper is on the use of formative assessment in classrooms which is increasingly becoming a widespread practice in education today. More specifically, the paper examines the role feedback (a crucial element of formative assessment) plays in student achievement. Feedback and the way it is defined, delivered, and used impacts the effectiveness of formative assessment. In addition, decisions about, and changes in, instruction are often made based on what is communicated through feedback. Thus, this paper defines feedback, discusses best practices for effective feedback, and describes how school psychologists can encourage and help facilitate the use of effective descriptive feedback between teacher and students. Implications and future directions for feedback within the context of formative assessment are discussed
Iowa immigrant and refugee incubator farm program
A one-year planning grant was used by a Des Moines (IA) area group to plot the most effective ways to encourage and support refugees and immigrants interested in starting farm enterprises in the region around Des Moines
Advanced single permanent magnet axipolar ironless stator ac motor for electric passenger vehicles
A program was conducted to design and develop an advanced-concept motor specifically created for propulsion of electric vehicles with increased range, reduced energy consumption, and reduced life-cycle costs in comparison with conventional systems. The motor developed is a brushless, dc, rare-earth cobalt, permanent magnet, axial air gap inductor machine that uses an ironless stator. Air cooling is inherent provided by the centrifugal-fan action of the rotor poles. An extensive design phase was conducted, which included analysis of the system performance versus the SAE J227a(D) driving cycle. A proof-of-principle model was developed and tested, and a functional model was developed and tested. Full generator-level testing was conducted on the functional model, recording electromagnetic, thermal, aerodynamic, and acoustic noise data. The machine demonstrated 20.3 kW output at 1466 rad/s and 160 dc. The novel ironless stator demonstated the capability to continuously operate at peak current. The projected system performance based on the use of a transistor inverter is 23.6 kW output power at 1466 rad/s and 83.3 percent efficiency. Design areas of concern regarding electric vehicle applications include the inherently high windage loss and rotor inertia

A study of gifted education in Coachella, California
California law states that identified gifted students must be provided 200 minutes of differentiated instruction a week. The law does not state how these 200 minutes must be met. This study examines how schools in the Coachella Valley are identifying and meeting the needs of their gifted students and if the schools are meeting the requirements of the law
Observation of local temporal correlations in trapped quantum gases
We measure the temporal pair correlation function of a
trapped gas of bosons above and below the critical temperature for
Bose-Einstein condensation. The measurement is performed {\it in situ} using a
local, time-resolved single-atom sensitive probing technique. Third and fourth
order correlation functions are also extracted. We develop a theoretical model
and compare it with our experimental data, finding good quantitative agreement
and highlighting the role of interactions. Our results promote temporal
correlations as new observables to study the dynamics of ultracold quantum
gases
