A Three-Dimensional Position Architecture Using Digital TDE Receiver and Cylindrical Array Antenna
AbstractThe robust three-dimensional position architecture is proposed in the paper, where the hybrid time difference of arrival (TDOA) and direction of arrival (DOA) position system was designed to backup the four-station TDOA position system. The digital time delay estimation (TDE) receiver is used for TDOA measurement and the cylindrical array antenna is used for DOA measurement. The general formula of linear phase compensation for cylindrical array antenna in horizontal plane is derived. The detection probability of the TDE receiver and the circular error probability (CEP) of the position systems over Rayleigh fading channel were numerically computed in three-dimensional space. Simulations indicate that the position accuracy of the four-station TDOA position system is degraded but the location function can be retained by the hybrid TDOA and DOA position system when any one of four-stations is out of work
Pacific Island countries: in search of a trade strategy
International trade is vital for economic prosperity in Pacific island countries, but their trade performance has been weak over the past decade with the exception of resource-rich countries. Small country size and remoteness from global economic centers may have contributed to this relatively poor performance. However, the emergence of Asia as a global economic center presents Pacific island countries with an unprecedented opportunity to develop trade with Asia, particularly in tourism for a number of PICs. Moreover, if a strong two-way linkage is established between tourism and agriculture,Pacific island countries stands a better chance to improve broad-based growth
A Monte Carlo Study of Correlations in Quantum Spin Ladders
We study antiferromagnetic spin--1/2 Heisenberg ladders, comprised of
chains () with ratio of inter-- to
intra--chain couplings. From measurements of the correlation function we deduce
the correlation length . For even , the static structure factor
exhibits a peak at a temperature below the corresponding spin gap. Results for
isotropically coupled ladders () are compared to those for
the single chain and the square lattice. For , the
correlation function of the two--chain ladder is in excellent agreement with
analytic results from conformal field theory, and exhibits simple
scaling behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 5 EPS figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Low-energy properties and magnetization plateaus in a 2-leg mixed spin ladder
Using the density matrix renormalization group technique we investigate the
low-energy properties and the magnetization plateau behavior in a 2-leg mixed
spin ladder consisting of a spin-1/2 chain coupled with a spin-1 chain. The
calculated results show that the system is in the same universality class as
the spin-3/2 chain when the interchain coupling is strongly ferromagnetic, but
the similarity between the two systems is less clear under other coupling
conditions. We have identified two types of magnetization plateau phases. The
calculation of the magnetization distribution on the spin-1/2 and the spin-1
chains on the ladder shows that one plateau phase is related to the partially
magnetized valence-bond-solid state, and the other plateau state contains
strongly coupled S=1 and s=1/2 spins on the rung.Comment: 6 pages with 8 eps figure
Quasi-Periodic Releases of Streamer Blobs and Velocity Variability of the Slow Solar Wind near the Sun
We search for persistent and quasi-periodic release events of streamer blobs
during 2007 with the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph on the \textit{Solar
and Heliospheric Observatory} and assess the velocity of the slow solar wind
along the plasma sheet above the corresponding streamer by measuring the
dynamic parameters of blobs. We find 10 quasi-periodic release events of
streamer blobs lasting for three to four days. In each day of these events, we
observe three-five blobs. The results are in line with previous studies using
data observed near the last solar minimum. Using the measured blob velocity as
a proxy for that of the mean flow, we suggest that the velocity of the
background slow solar wind near the Sun can vary significantly within a few
hours. This provides an observational manifestation of the large velocity
variability of the slow solar wind near the Sun.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Soalr Physic
Antiferromagnetically coupled alternating spin chains
The effect of antiferromagnetic interchain coupling in alternating spin
(1,1/2) chains is studied by mean of a spin wave theory and density matrix
renormalization group (DMRG). In particular, two limiting cases are
investigated, the two-leg ladder and its two dimensional (2D) generalization.
Results of the ground state properties like energy, spin gap, magnetizations,
and correlation functions are reported for the whole range of the interchain
coupling . For the 2D case the spin wave results predict a smooth
dimensional crossover from 1D to 2D keeping the ground state always ordered.
For the ladder system, the DMRG results show that any drives the
system to a gapped ground state. Furthermore the behaviour of the correlation
functions closely resemble the uniform spin-1/2 ladder. For lower
than 0.3, however, the gap behaves quadratically as . Finally, it is argued that the behaviour of the spin gap for an
arbitrary number of mixed coupled spin chains is analogous to that of the
uniform spin-1/2 chains.Comment: 5 pages, 7 ps-figure
A comparison of limited-stretch models of rubber elasticity
In this paper we describe various limited-stretch models of non-linear rubber elasticity, each dependent on only the first invariant of the left Cauchy-Green strain tensor and having only two independent material constants. The models are described as limited-stretch, or restricted elastic, because the strain energy and stress response become infinite at a finite value of the first invariant. These models describe well the limited stretch of the polymer chains of which rubber is composed. We discuss Gent's model which is the simplest limited-stretch model and agrees well with experiment. Various statistical models are then described: the one-chain, three-chain, four-chain and Arruda-Boyce eight-chain models, all of which involve the inverse Langevin function. A numerical comparison between the three-chain and eight-chain models is provided. Next, we compare various models which involve approximations to the inverse Langevin function with the exact inverse Langevin function of the eight-chain model. A new approximate model is proposed that is as simple as Cohen's original model but significantly more accurate. We show that effectively the eight-chain model may be regarded as a linear combination of the neo-Hookean and Gent models. Treloar's model is shown to have about half the percentage error of our new model but it is much more complicated. For completeness a modified Treloar model is introduced but this is only slightly more accurate than Treloar's original model. For the deformations of uniaxial tension, biaxial tension, pure shear and simple shear we compare the accuracy of these models, and that of Puso, with the eight-chain model by means of graphs and a table. Our approximations compare extremely well with models frequently used and described in the literature, having the smallest mean percentage error over most of the range of the argument
Quark Confinement and Dual Representation in 2+1 Dimensional Pure Yang-Mills Theory
We study the quark confinement problem in 2+1 dimensional pure Yang-Mills
theory using euclidean instanton methods. The instantons are regularized and
dressed Wu-Yang monopoles. The dressing of a monopole is due to the mean field
of the rest of the monopoles. We argue that such configurations are stable to
small perturbations unlike the case of singular, undressed monopoles. Using
exact non-perturbative results for the 3-dim. Coulomb gas, where Debye
screening holds for arbitrarily low temperatures, we show in a self-consistent
way that a mass gap is dynamically generated in the gauge theory. The mass gap
also determines the size of the monopoles. In a sense the pure Yang-Mills
theory generates a dynamical Higgs effect. We also identify the disorder
operator of the model in terms of the Sine-Gordon field of the Coulomb gas.Comment: 26 pages, RevTex, Title changed, a new section added, the discussion
