    A resonant feature near the Perseus arm revealed by red clump stars

    We investigate the extinction together with the radial velocity dispersion and distribution of red clump stars in the anti-center direction using spectra obtained with Hectospec on the MMT. We find that extinction peaks at Galactocentric radii of about 9.5 and 12.5 kpc, right in front of the locations of the Perseus and Outer arms and in line with the relative position of dust and stars in external spiral galaxies. The radial velocity dispersion peaks around 10kpc, which coincides with the location of the Perseus arm, yields an estimated arm-interarm density contrast of 1.3-1.5 and is in agreement with previous studies. Finally, we discover that the radial velocity distribution bifurcates around 10-11 kpc into two peaks at +27 km/s and -4 km/s. This seems to be naturally explained by the presence of the outer Lindblad resonance of the Galactic bar, but further observations will be needed to understand if the corotation resonance of the spirals arms also plays a role.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Inventory of Karst Springs of Fayette County, Kentucky

    The purpose of this publication is to document karst springs in Fayette County and provide a resource to help the county\u27s citizens avoid the geologic hazards associated with building near springs during future urban development. It may be used as an aid in locating potential groundwater discharge points in case of hazardous material spills, and to provide a foundation for future studies of the hydrogeology and karst geology of the Inner Bluegrass Region. It is also a basic historical record of the springs of Fayette County. Although over 350 springs are reported here, this inventory is not exhaustive. At the time of publication, about one-third of Fayette County had not yet been systematically inventoried. Fortunately, many springs in the unvisited areas were already known and recorded in the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) database and are included in this publication. The spring locations shown are mostly those discharging from karst conduits, but also included are a significant number of soil seeps or wet-weather springs (epikarstic), and some springs apparently discharging from fractures created by faults. The springs vary in size from seasonal seeps to perennial springs with base flows approaching 0.5 cubic foot per second. As the rapid pace of urban development continues in Fayette County, some natural springs reported here will become buried, and the records used to compile this publication will be an important resource in the future for separating natural from man-made groundwater discharge points

Copyright 2013 International Glaciological SocietyIce thickness estimates using advanced nadir sounding and tomographic radar processing techniques are compared and combined in a study of Isunnguata Sermia glacier, Greenland. Using an ensemble of Operation IceBridge flight lines spaced at 500 m intervals and running approximately along the flow direction, we find there is a statistically excellent comparison between subglacial terrains derived from two-dimensional tomography and gridded nadir sounding. Analysis shows that tomographic data better capture short wavelength (1–2 km) patterns in basal terrain, but interpolated nadir sounding data yield more spatially extensive and continuous coverage across the glacier, especially in deep subglacial troughs. Using derived surface and basal topography maps, we find that driving stress and measured and modeled surface velocity comparisons indicate that basal sliding is an important component of the glacier motion, but is also only weakly coupled to the detailed bed topography save for the deepest troughs. As might be expected for this land-terminating, relatively slow-moving glacier, the subglacial and proglacial topography is similar, suggesting the erosional processes acting on the modern glacier bed once helped sculpt the now exposed land

    Bovine Aorta Endothelial Cell Incubation with Interleukin 2: Morphological Changes Correlate with Enhanced Vascular Permeability

    Interleukin 2 induced alterations in the morphology of bovine aortic endothelial cells in vitro. The changes observed in confluent cultures of bovine aortic endothelial cells included retraction and elongation of eel ls leading to enlarged gaps between cells quantified by image analysis. Purified IL-2 (1 U/ml medium) increased the gaps between endothelial cells 3-4-fold compared with control cultures. The effect was transient, since the cells reverted to their original morphology 6-12 hours after the removal of lL-2. Correlative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies using fresh bovine aorta showed a dose-dependent alteration of the endothelial surface by IL-2 characterized by rounding and elongation of endothelial cells and prominent perinuclear areas. Gaps between the endothelial cells were observed when aorta samples were incubated with 2 U of IL-2/ml of medium. This was confirmed by SEM, transmission electron microscopy and Evans blue dye staining. These results suggest that IL-2 caused morphological alterations in endothelial cells that enhanced the permeability of the vascular endothelium

    A Statistical Decomposition Based Neural Network For Multivariate Time Series Forecasting

    Machine learning based time series forecasting methods are popular and can match the performance of statistical models, in terms of accuracy, scalability, speed, etc. This disclosure presents techniques that incorporate statistical modeling into a neural network framework. The hybrid time series forecasting model described herein is named Seasonality Trend AutoRegressive Residual Yeo-Johnson power transformation Neural Network (STARRY-N). STARRY-N combines the advantages of residual neural network structure (such as N-BEATS) and explainable statistical forecasting models (such as TBATS). The model utilizes a neural network structure with separate stacks for trend, power transformed trend, seasonality, residual correction, and covariate adoption such as holiday effects. STARRY-N has good accuracy and is an explainable forecasting model

    Visualization of lithium-ion transport and phase evolution within and between manganese oxide nanorods.

    Multiple lithium-ion transport pathways and local phase changes upon lithiation in silver hollandite are revealed via in situ microscopy including electron diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy, coupled with density functional theory and phase field calculations. We report unexpected inter-nanorod lithium-ion transport, where the reaction fronts and kinetics are maintained within the neighbouring nanorod. Notably, this is the first time-resolved visualization of lithium-ion transport within and between individual nanorods, where the impact of oxygen deficiencies is delineated. Initially, fast lithium-ion transport is observed along the long axis with small net volume change, resulting in two lithiated silver hollandite phases distinguishable by orthorhombic distortion. Subsequently, a slower reaction front is observed, with formation of polyphase lithiated silver hollandite and face-centred-cubic silver metal with substantial volume expansion. These results indicate lithium-ion transport is not confined within a single nanorod and may provide a paradigm shift for one-dimensional tunnelled materials, particularly towards achieving high-rate capability

    Dipole-phonon quantum logic with alkaline-earth monoxide and monosulfide cations

    Dipole-phonon quantum logic (DPQL) leverages the interaction between polar molecular ions and the motional modes of a trapped-ion Coulomb crystal to provide a potentially scalable route to quantum information science. Here, we study a class of candidate molecular ions for DPQL, the cationic alkaline-earth monoxides and monosulfides, which possess suitable structure for DPQL and can be produced in existing atomic ion experiments with little additional complexity. We present calculations of DPQL operations for one of these molecules, CaO+^+, and discuss progress towards experimental realization. We also further develop the theory of DPQL to include state preparation and measurement and entanglement of multiple molecular ions.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    A Comprehensive and Modularized Platform for Time Series Forecast and Analytics

    Users that work with time series data typically disaggregate time series problems into various isolated tasks and use specific libraries, packages, tools, and services that deal with each individual task. However, the tools used are often fragmented. Analysts have to load different packages for common tasks such as data preprocessing, clustering, feature extraction, forecasting, hierarchical reconciliation, evaluation, and visualization. This disclosure describes a reliable, scalable infrastructure to meet various needs of time series practitioners without adding engineering overload. The infrastructure is modularized and the modules are connected in a flow type declarative language which makes the infrastructure extensible and future proof. Practitioners can use the entire infrastructure or only certain modules, while performing other operations using first or third party libraries or pipelines

    Contacts between the endoplasmic reticulum and other membranes in neurons

    The cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells is compartmentalized by intracellular membranes that define subcellular organelles. One of these organelles, the endoplasmic reticulum, forms a continuous network of tubules and cisternae that extends throughout all cell compartments, including neuronal dendrites and axons. This network communicates with most other organelles by vesicular transport, and also by contacts that do not lead to fusion but allow cross-talk between adjacent bilayers. Though these membrane contacts have previously been observed in neurons, their distribution and abundance has not been systematically analyzed. Here, we have carried out such analysis. Our studies reveal new aspects of the internal structure of neurons and provide a critical complement to information about interorganelle communication emerging from functional and biochemical studies
