    Tree ring δ18O reveals no long-term change of atmospheric water demand since 1800 in the northern Great Hinggan Mountains, China

    Global warming will significantly increase transpirational water demand, which could dramatically affect plant physiology and carbon and water budgets. Tree ring δ18O is a potential index of the leaf-to-air vapor-pressure deficit (VPD) and therefore has great potential for long-term climatic reconstruction. Here we developed δ18O chronologies of two dominant native trees, Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii Rupr.) and Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica), from a permafrost region in the Great Hinggan Mountains of northeastern China. We found that the July–August VPD and relative humidity were the dominant factors that controlled tree ring δ18O in the study region, indicating strong regulation of stomatal conductance. Based on the larch and pine tree ring δ18O chronologies, we developed a reliable summer (July–August) VPD reconstruction since 1800. Warming growing season temperatures increase transpiration and enrich cellulose 18O, but precipitation seemed to be the most important influence on VPD changes in this cold region. Periods with stronger transpirational demand occurred around the 1850s, from 1914 to 1925, and from 2005 to 2010. However, we found no overall long-term increasing or decreasing trends for VPD since 1800, suggesting that despite the increasing temperatures and thawing permafrost throughout the region, forest transpirational demand has not increased significantly during the past two centuries. Under current climatic conditions, VPD did not limit growth of larch and pine, even during extremely drought years. Our findings will support more realistic evaluations and reliable predictions of the potential influences of ongoing climatic change on carbon and water cycles and on forest dynamics in permafrost regions

    Displacement Prediction of Tunnel Surrounding Rock: A Comparison of Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Network

    Displacement prediction of tunnel surrounding rock plays an important role in safety monitoring and quality control tunnel construction. In this paper, two methodologies, support vector machines (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN), are introduced to predict tunnel surrounding rock displacement. Then the two modes are texted with the data of Fangtianchong tunnel, respectively. The comparative results show that solutions gained by SVM seem to be more robust with a smaller standard error compared to ANN. Generally, the comparison between artificial neural network (ANN) and SVM shows that SVM has a higher accuracy prediction than ANN. Results also show that SVM seems to be a powerful tool for tunnel surrounding rock displacement prediction

    Family-clinician shared decision making in intensive care units : cluster randomized trial in China

    We thank the China Medical Board, which financially supported our study.Objective To investigate if a Family-Clinician Shared Decision-Making (FCSDM) intervention benefits patients, families and intensive care units (ICUs) clinicians.  Methods Six ICUs in China were allocated to intervention or usual care. 548 patients with critical illness, 548 family members and 387 ICU clinicians were included into the study. Structured FCSDM family meetings were held in the intervention group. Scales of SSDM, HADS, QoL2 and CSACD were used to assess families’ satisfaction and distress, patients’ quality of life, and clinicians’ collaboration respectively.  Results Comparing the intervention group with the control group at post-intervention, there were significant differences in the families’ satisfaction (P =0.0001), depression level (P =0.005), and patients’ quality of life (P =0.0007). The clinicians’ mean CSCAD score was more positive in the intervention group than controls (P < 0.05). There was no significant between-group differences on ICU daily medical cost, but the intervention group demonstrated shorter number of days’ stay in ICU (P=0.0004).  Conclusion The FCSDM intervention improved families’ satisfaction and depression, shortened patients’ duration of ICU stay, and enhanced ICU clinicians’ collaboration.  Practice implications Further improvement and promotion of the FCSDM model are needed to provide more evidence to this field in China.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Nitrogen rather than streamflow regulates the growth of riparian trees

    In arid and semiarid regions, riparian forests are crucial for maintaining ecological biodiversity and sustainability, and supporting social and economic development. For the typical arid and semiarid ecosystem, streamflow variability is thought to be the dominant factor influencing the vulnerability and evolution of the riparian forests, which often leads to the neglect of other potentially important factors such as nutrient availability and transport. Here, we measured annual stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) and nitrogen concentrations (N%) in the tree rings of Populus euphratica Oliv. (Euphrates poplar) over a 90 year period (1920–2012), collected from the lower researches of the inland Heihe River, northwestern China. Coupling with our previous dual-isotope (δ13C and δ18O) chronologies and estimated intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), we examined the linkages between tree-ring δ15N and δ18O, iWUE, streamflow, and then explored the contributions of each to tree growth during the study period. Our results show that after 1975, a statistically significant correlation between tree-ring δ15N and river streamflow appears, indicating the river as a potential carrier of nitrogen from the upper and middle reaches to the lower research trees. In addition, the linkage between tree-ring δ15N and iWUE suggests substantial influence of carbon and nitrogen together on photosynthesis and transpiration of trees, although this connection become decoupled since AD 1986. The commonality analysis revealed that the nitrogen impacts indicated by tree-ring δ15N on tree growth cannot be ignored when evaluating riparian forest development. The fertilization effects caused by rising CO2 concentration complicate the nitrogen constraints on tree growth during the later part of the past century. Our results have potentially broad implications for identifying the limited factors for dryland forest ecosystems that are susceptible to natural water resource variations and human activities

    Methodology and experiences of rapid advice guideline development for children with COVID-19: responding to the COVID-19 outbreak quickly and efficiently.

    BACKGROUND Rapid Advice Guidelines (RAG) provide decision makers with guidance to respond to public health emergencies by developing evidence-based recommendations in a short period of time with a scientific and standardized approach. However, the experience from the development process of a RAG has so far not been systematically summarized. Therefore, our working group will take the experience of the development of the RAG for children with COVID-19 as an example to systematically explore the methodology, advantages, and challenges in the development of the RAG. We shall propose suggestions and reflections for future research, in order to provide a more detailed reference for future development of RAGs. RESULT The development of the RAG by a group of 67 researchers from 11 countries took 50 days from the official commencement of the work (January 28, 2020) to submission (March 17, 2020). A total of 21 meetings were held with a total duration of 48 h (average 2.3 h per meeting) and an average of 16.5 participants attending. Only two of the ten recommendations were fully supported by direct evidence for COVID-19, three recommendations were supported by indirect evidence only, and the proportion of COVID-19 studies among the body of evidence in the remaining five recommendations ranged between 10 and 83%. Six of the ten recommendations used COVID-19 preprints as evidence support, and up to 50% of the studies with direct evidence on COVID-19 were preprints. CONCLUSIONS In order to respond to public health emergencies, the development of RAG also requires a clear and transparent formulation process, usually using a large amount of indirect and non-peer-reviewed evidence to support the formation of recommendations. Strict following of the WHO RAG handbook does not only enhance the transparency and clarity of the guideline, but also can speed up the guideline development process, thereby saving time and labor costs

    Régularisation spatiale de représentations distribuées de mots

    Stimulée par l’usage intensif des téléphones mobiles, l’exploitation conjointe des don-nées textuelles et des données spatiales présentes dans les objets spatio-textuels (p. ex. tweets)est devenue la pierre angulaire à de nombreuses applications comme la recherche de lieux d’attraction. Du point de vue scientifique, ces tâches reposent de façon critique sur la représentation d’objets spatiaux et la définition de fonctions d’appariement entre ces objets. Dans cet article,nous nous intéressons au problème de représentation de ces objets. Plus spécifiquement, confortés par le succès des représentations distribuées basées sur les approches neuronales, nous proposons de régulariser les représentations distribuées de mots (c.-à-d. plongements lexicaux ou word embeddings), pouvant être combinées pour construire des représentations d’objets,grâce à leurs répartitions spatiales. L’objectif sous-jacent est de révéler d’éventuelles relations sémantiques locales entre mots ainsi que la multiplicité des sens d’un même mot. Les expérimentations basées sur une tâche de recherche d’information qui consiste à retourner le lieu physique faisant l’objet (sujet) d’un géo-texte montrent que l’intégration notre méthode de régularisation spatiale de représentations distribuées de mots dans un modèle d’appariement de base permet d’obtenir des améliorations significatives par rapport aux modèles de référence
