K.C. Wu (1903-1984) served as mayor of several Chinese cities during the 1930s and 1940s and then in December 1949 was appointed Governor of Taiwan by Chiang Kai-shek. Wu emigrated to the United States in 1954. Wu joined the faculty of Armstrong from 1966 to 1973. The collection consists of biographical information, manuscripts mainly of The Chinese Heritage (1982), lecture notes, clippings and information on his lawsuit with the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1972. Also Wu\u27s collection of Chinese history books.https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/finding-aids-lane/1030/thumbnail.jp

Effects of Warm Up Intensity on Factors Related to Subsequent Performance of Submaximal Exercise

Introduction: Athletes often warm up (WU) prior to exercise to improve performance. However, there are no clear directives regarding the intensity of the WU that is most effective in improving physiological responses related to enhanced aerobic performance. Methods: Nine college-aged men (age, ht, mass, 20.6 yr, 1.7 m, 84.8 kg, respectively) performed WU of varying intensities, 60% ventilatory threshold (VT), 100%VT, and 120%VT prior to performing 5 min of steady state exercise at 80%VT on a cycle ergometer. O2 deficit, RPE, steady state heart rate (HRss), and steady state VO2 (VO2ss) were measured during the exercise bout. Results: There was a significant decrease in O2 deficit as WU intensity increased ((2,9)= 9.15, p = .002, 2=0.53) with the deficit being lowest after WU at 120%VT. RPE were significantly lower after WU at 120%VT than both 60% and 100%VT (=(2,9)=6.88, p=.007, 2=0.46). However, WU intensity did not significantly affect either HRss (F(2,9)=0.48, p=0.63) or VO2ss (F(2,9)=1.10, p=0.36) during the exercise bout. Conclusion: The findings suggest that a higher intensity WU improves factors related to improved aerobic performance, i.e. decreased O2 deficit and RPE, without adversely affecting factors that could lead to a decline in performance, i.e. increased HRss and VO2ss

    COUPLING CHIRAL BOSONS TO GRAVITY

    Get PDF
The chiral boson actions of Floreanini and Jackiw (FJ), and of McClain,Wu and Yu (MWY) have been recently shown to be different representations of the same chiral boson theory. MWY displays manifest covariance and also a (gauge) symmetry that is hidden in the FJ side, which, on the other hand, displays the physical spectrum in a simple manner. We make use of the covariance of the MWY representation for the chiral boson to couple it to background gravity showing explicitly the equivalence with the previous results for the FJ representationComment: 8 pages, Latex, no figure

On the Radiatively Induced Lorentz and CPT Violating Chern-Simons Term

The radiatively induced Lorentz and CPT violating Chern-Simons terms in QED is calculated based on the recently developed loop regularization method [Y.L. Wu, Int.J.Mod.Phys.A18 (2003) 5363, hep-th/0209021; Y.L. Wu, Mod.Phys.Lett.A19 (2004) 2191, hep-th/0311082] for quantum field theories. It enables us to make general comments on the various results in literature and obtain a consistent result when simultaneously combining the evaluation for the chiral anomaly which has a unique form once the vector current is kept conserved.Comment: 10 pages, no figures, published versio

A Common Election Day for Euro Zone Member States?

    Get PDF
This paper tests for the Euro zone the hypothesis put forward by Sapir and Sekkat (1999) that synchronizing elections might improve welfare. After identifying a political budget cycle in the Euro zone we build a politico-macroeconomic model and simulate the effects of adopting a common election day in the 12 Euro zone member states. The results support most of the theoretical predictions by Sapir-Sekkat: (i) Synchronizing the elections could enhance GDP growth, reduce unemployment, but leads to increased inflation and in some countries to a deterioration of the budget; higher inflation forces ECB to monetary restrictions. (ii) If the synchronization happens asymmetrically - either only in the large or only in the small Euro zone countries - the result depends on the size of the spillovers. (iii) As anticipated in Sapir -Sekkat a common election day is a further step towards the desired "European business cycle", however, at the cost of increasing its amplitude. Harmonizing elections is another method of policy coordination. Whether this leads to higher welfare is a matter of weighting the different macroeconomic outcomes and it also depends on the model applied. Quantifying Facial Age by Posterior of Age Comparisons

We introduce a novel approach for annotating large quantity of in-the-wild facial images with high-quality posterior age distribution as labels. Each posterior provides a probability distribution of estimated ages for a face. Our approach is motivated by observations that it is easier to distinguish who is the older of two people than to determine the person's actual age. Given a reference database with samples of known ages and a dataset to label, we can transfer reliable annotations from the former to the latter via human-in-the-loop comparisons. We show an effective way to transform such comparisons to posterior via fully-connected and SoftMax layers, so as to permit end-to-end training in a deep network. Thanks to the efficient and effective annotation approach, we collect a new large-scale facial age dataset, dubbed `MegaAge', which consists of 41,941 images. Data can be downloaded from our project page mmlab.ie.cuhk.edu.hk/projects/MegaAge and github.com/zyx2012/Age_estimation_BMVC2017. With the dataset, we train a network that jointly performs ordinal hyperplane classification and posterior distribution learning. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on popular benchmarks such as MORPH2, Adience, and the newly proposed MegaAge.Comment: To appear on BMVC 2017 (oral) revised versio
