    Managing Humidity in Electronics Using Water Vapor-Selective Membranes

    Abstract: As outdoor electronics have become prevalent in every aspect of daily life, handling humidity in them is an emerging issue for reliable devices. As water vapor enters the electronics enclosure, there is a risk of condensation, which could prevent the electronics from functioning and further damage the device. Traditionally, the humidity removal for electronics is usually done by heating the air within the enclosure, which can be energy-intensive and less efficient. Vapor selective membrane systems are promising alternatives for air heating dehumidification as they do not require heating energy for water vapor removal. It allows water vapor transport through the membrane while blocking air. The objective of this research in the spring is to design and assemble electronics enclosures with a vapor selective membrane and sensors to monitor the humidity removal progress. Two designs including a vacuum pump and joule pump will be tested. The expected results are testable prototypes and preliminary test data that prove it is possible to accurately monitor the humidity level both inside and outside the enclosure for future testing

    The three dimensional microstructural network of elastin, collagen and cells in Achilles tendons

    Similar to most biological tissues, the biomechanical and functional characteristics of the Achilles tendon are closely related to its composition and microstructure. It is commonly reported that type I collagen is the predominant component of tendons and is mainly responsible for the tissue's function. Although elastin has been found in varying proportions in other connective tissues, previous studies report that tendons contain very small quantities of elastin. However, the morphology of and the microstructural relationship among the elastic fibres, collagen and cells in tendon tissue have not been well examined. We hypothesize the elastic fibres, as another fibrillar component in the extracellular matrix, have a unique role in mechanical functions and microstructural arrangement in Achilles tendons. Using confocal and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging techniques, this study examined the 3-dimensional microstructure of the collagen, elastin and cells in the mid-portion of hydrated rabbit Achilles tendons. It has been shown that elastic fibres present a close connection with the tenocytes. The close relationship of the three components has been revealed as a distinct, integrated and complex microstructural network. Notably, a "spiral" structure within fibril bundles in Achilles tendons was observed in some samples in specialized regions.     Examining medication adherence and preferences for a lifestyle intervention among Black and Latinx adults with hypertension: a feasibility study

    BACKGROUND: Approximately 116.4 million adults in the USA have hypertension, and the rates of uncontrolled hypertension remain higher among racial and ethnic minorities. There is a need for effective interventions that promote healthy behaviors and long-term behavioral change in the management of hypertension. The primary objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of developing a lifestyle intervention that would assess hypertension management and the use of technology among Blacks and Latinx with hypertension. The secondary objective is to explore perceptions of community-based resources for hypertension and preferences for a lifestyle intervention for hypertension among Blacks and Latinx with hypertension. METHODS: In this explanatory mixed-methods study, quantitative data were collected using surveys, participants reported their use of technology and adherence to antihypertensive medication. Participants were Black and Latinx adults with hypertension living in Central Pennsylvania, USA. Qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews and focus groups, and participants were asked about managing hypertension, local resources, and preferences for a behavioral intervention. Data were examined using summary statistics for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. RESULTS: Black and Latinx participants (n=30) completed surveys for the quantitative study. The majority (75%) of participants self-reported being confident in managing their medication without help and remembering to take their medication as prescribed. Fewer participants (54.2%) reported using technology to help manage medication. There were 12 participants in the qualitative phase of the study. The qualitative findings indicated that participants felt confident in their ability to manage hypertension and were interested in participating in a lifestyle intervention or program based online. Some participants reported a lack of resources in their community, while others highlighted local and national resources that were helpful in managing high blood pressure. CONCLUSION: This study provides important insights on barriers and facilitators for managing hypertension, current use of technology and interest in using technology to manage hypertension, and preferences for future lifestyle interventions among racial and ethnic minorities. This study also provides insights to the health needs and resources available in this community and how future behavioral interventions could be tailored to meet the needs of this community. The findings of this study will be used to inform the tailoring of future lifestyle interventions; specifically, we will include text messaging reminders for medication and to disseminate educational materials related to hypertension and provide resources to connect study participants with local and national resources

    Repartnering: the relevance of parenthood and gender to cohabitation and remarriage among the formerly married

    This paper is an exploratory analysis of the impact of current and anticipated parenthood on cohabitation and remarriage among those formerly living in marriage-type relationships. The focus on children is embedded within a broader analysis of repartnering which takes account of other factors, including gender. Quantitative and qualitative analyses are used, with a multivariate analysis of repartnering patterns, using data from the General Household Survey, being complementedby in-depth interview data examining the attitudes of the formerly married to future relationships. The paper demonstrates that parenthood has a statistically significant effect on the likelihood of formerly married women repartnering, with a higher number of children being associated with a lower probability of repartnering. The presence of children can work against repartnering in a variety of ways. Children place demands on their parents and can deter or object to potential partners. Parents may see their parental role as more important than, and a barrier to, new relationships. However, mothers are typically looking for partners for themselves rather than fathers for their children. Among formerly married people without children, the desire to become a parent encourages repartnering. The paper concludes that parenthood should be a key consideration in analyses of repartnering

    Knowledge-based gene expression classification via matrix factorization

    Motivation: Modern machine learning methods based on matrix decomposition techniques, like independent component analysis (ICA) or non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), provide new and efficient analysis tools which are currently explored to analyze gene expression profiles. These exploratory feature extraction techniques yield expression modes (ICA) or metagenes (NMF). These extracted features are considered indicative of underlying regulatory processes. They can as well be applied to the classification of gene expression datasets by grouping samples into different categories for diagnostic purposes or group genes into functional categories for further investigation of related metabolic pathways and regulatory networks. Results: In this study we focus on unsupervised matrix factorization techniques and apply ICA and sparse NMF to microarray datasets. The latter monitor the gene expression levels of human peripheral blood cells during differentiation from monocytes to macrophages. We show that these tools are able to identify relevant signatures in the deduced component matrices and extract informative sets of marker genes from these gene expression profiles. The methods rely on the joint discriminative power of a set of marker genes rather than on single marker genes. With these sets of marker genes, corroborated by leave-one-out or random forest cross-validation, the datasets could easily be classified into related diagnostic categories.     Elemental energy spectra of cosmic rays measured by CREAM-II

    We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass). The instrument (CREAM-II) was comprised of detectors based on different techniques (Cherenkov light, specific ionization in scintillators and silicon sensors) to provide a redundant charge identification and a thin ionization calorimeter capable of measuring the energy of cosmic rays up to several hundreds of TeV. The data analysis is described and the individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe are reported up to ~ 10^14 eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for all the primary elements and can be expressed as a power law in energy E^{-2.66+/-0.04}. The nitrogen absolute intensity in the energy range 100-800 GeV/n is also measured.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, presented at ICRC 2009, Lodz, Polan

    During its second Antarctic flight, the CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) balloon experiment collected data for 28 days, measuring the charge and the energy of cosmic rays (CR) with a redundant system of particle identification and an imaging thin ionization calorimeter.
