Assessment of the performance of the Chilbolton 3-GHz Advanced Meteorological radar for cloud-top height retrieval
The Chilbolton 3-GHz Advanced Meteorological Radar (CAMRa), which is mounted on a
fully steerable 25 metre dish, can provide three-dimensional information on the presence of
hydrometeors. We investigate the potential for this radar to make useful measurements of
low-altitude liquid water cloud structure. In order to assess the cloud-height assignment
capabilities of the 3-GHz radar, low-level cloud-top heights were retrieved from CAMRa
measurements made between May and July 2003 and compared with cloud-top heights
retrieved from a vertically pointing 94-GHz radar that operates alongside CAMRa. The
average difference between 94-GHz and 3-GHz radar derived cloud-top heights is shown to
be -0.1±0.4 km. In order to assess the capability of 3-GHz radar scans to be used for
satellite-derived cloud-top height validation, Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer
(MISR) cloud-top heights were compared with both 94-GHz and 3-GHz radar retrievals. The
average difference between 94-GHz radar and MISR cloud-top heights is shown to be
0.1±0.3 km while the 3-GHz radar and MISR average cloud-top height difference is shown
to be –0.2±0.6 km. In assessing the value of the CAMRa measurements, the problems
associated with low reflectivity values from stratiform liquid water clouds, ground clutter,
and Bragg scattering resulting from turbulent mixing are all addressed. We show that in
spite of the difficulties, the potential exists for CAMRa measurements to contribute
significantly to liquid water cloud-top height retrievals leading to the production of twodimensional
transects (i.e. maps) of cloud-top height

The production of /l/ is examined for pre- and post-operative patients who have undergone surgery in three distinct areas (anterior, posterior or lateral tongue) followed by radiotherapy and reconstruction. Results show F1 and F2 to be raised after surgery in all cases. Normalised measures of tongue height (F1-F0) and extension (F2-F1) revealed no significant change after surgery to the side of the tongue but in the other two categories, results indicated a change normally associated with both raising and fronting of the tongue. The paper compares these results with findings from other studies and considers possible mechanisms for the observed changes. 1. Schottky Diodes on ZnO Thin Films Grown by Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition
Enhancement of the properties of zinc oxide (ZnO)-based Schottky diodes has been explored using a combination of plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) ZnO thin films and silver oxide Schottky contacts deposited by reactive radio-frequency sputtering. The electrical properties of the ZnO thin films were systematically tuned by varying the deposition temperature and oxygen plasma time during PE-ALD to optimize the performance of the diode. Low temperature (80 °C) coupled with relatively long oxygen plasma time (>30 s) PE-ALD is the key to produce ZnO films with net doping concentration lower than 10 17 cm -3 . Under the optimal deposition conditions identified, the diode shows an ideality factor of 1.33, an effective barrier height of 0.80 eV, and an ON/OFF ratio of 3.11 × 10 5
Labour market experiences of young UK Bangladeshi men: Identity, inclusion and exclusion in inner-city London
Detailed qualitative data are used to explore the processes perpetuatinglabour market disadvantage among young UK-Bangladeshi men living in central London. Strong forces of inclusion within the Bangladeshi community are found to interact with forces of exclusion from ‘mainstream’
society to constrain aspirations and limit opportunities. Though diverse forms of young Bangladeshi masculinity are found, a common pattern is heavy dependency on intra-ethnic networks. Negative experiences of and isolation from ‘mainstream’ society further reinforce reliance
on ‘our own people’. However, acute ambivalence towards belonging to a dense Bangladeshi community exists, exemplified in the widespread denigration of the restaurant trade. Many respondents express the desire to ‘break out’ and access new experiences. The findings support current
policy emphasis on ‘connecting people to work’ but highlight the more fundamental need to connect people across ethnic boundaries. The paper urges researchers to ‘unpack’ ethnicity to consider carefully what ethnic
identity implies in terms of access to resources and opportunities for different individuals in different contexts in order better to understand the diversity of labour market outcomes and the persistence of disadvantage

Measured energy savings from using night temperature setback
The measured energy savings resulting from using night temperature setback in typical light-construction wooden office buildings was determined. Researchers installed monitoring equipment in a six-building sample of two-story wooden buildings at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Data obtained during both single-setting and night-setback operating modes were used to develop models of each building`s heat consumption as a function of the difference between inside and outside temperature. These models were used to estimate seasonal savings that could be obtained from the use of night-setback thermostat control. The measured savings in heating energy from using night temperature setback for the six Fort Devens buildings ranged from 14% to 25%; the mean savings was 19.2%.
