    X‐ray microscopy and automatic detection of defects in through silicon vias in three‐dimensional integrated circuits

    Through silicon vias (TSVs) are a key enabling technology for interconnection and realization of complex three-dimensional integrated circuit (3D-IC) components. In order to perform failure analysis without the need of destructive sample preparation, x-ray microscopy (XRM) is a rising method of analyzing the internal structure of samples. However, there is still a lack of evaluated scan recipes or best practices regarding XRM parameter settings for the study of TSVs in the current state of literature. There is also an increased interest in automated machine learning and deep learning approaches for qualitative and quantitative inspection processes in recent years. Especially deep learning based object detection is a well-known methodology for fast detection and classification capable of working with large volumetric XRM datasets. Therefore, a combined XRM and deep learning object detection workflow for automatic micrometer accurate defect location on liner-TSVs was developed throughout this work. Two measurement setups including detailed information about the used parameters for either full IC device scan or detailed TSV scan were introduced. Both are able to depict delamination defects and finer structures in TSVs with either a low or high resolution. The combination of a 0.4 objective with a beam voltage of 40 kV proved to be a good combination for achieving optimal imaging contrast for the full-device scan. However, detailed TSV scans have demonstrated that the use of a 20 objective along with a beam voltage of 140 kV significantly improves image quality. A database with 30,000 objects was created for automated data analysis, so that a well-established object recognition method for automated defect analysis could be integrated into the process analysis. This RetinaNet-based object detection method achieves a very strong average precision of 0.94. It supports the detection of erroneous TSVs in both top view and side view, so that defects can be detected at different depths. Consequently, the proposed workflow can be used for failure analysis, quality control or process optimization in R&D environments

    Nest desertion is not predicted by cuckoldry in the Eurasian penduline tit

    Engagement in extra-pair copulations is an example of the abundant conflicting interests between males and females over reproduction. Potential benefits for females and the risk of cuckoldry for males are expected to have important implications on the evolution of parental care. However, whether parents adjust parental care in response to parentage remains unclear. In Eurasian penduline tits Remiz pendulinus, which are small polygamous songbirds, parental care is carried out either by the male or by the female. In addition, one third of clutches is deserted by both male and female. Desertion takes place during the egg-laying phase. Using genotypes of nine microsatellite loci of 443 offspring and 211 adults, we test whether extra-pair paternity predicts parental care. We expect males to be more likely to desert cuckolded broods, whereas we expect females, if they obtain benefits from having multiple sires, to be more likely to care for broods with multiple paternity. Our results suggest that parental care is not adjusted to parentage on an ecological timescale. Furthermore, we found that male attractiveness does not predict cuckoldry, and we found no evidence for indirect benefits for females (i.e., increased growth rates or heterozygosity of extra-pair offspring). We argue that male Eurasian penduline tits may not be able to assess the risk of cuckoldry; thus, a direct association with parental care is unlikely to evolve. However, timing of desertion (i.e., when to desert during the egg-laying phase) may be influenced by the risk of cuckoldry. Future work applying extensive gene sequencing and quantitative genetics is likely to further our understanding of how selection may influence the association between parentage and parental care

    ABSTRACT In this paper a macro parallel robot is presented in which conventional bearings are replaced by pseudo-elastic flexure hinges. The robot consists of a spatial parallel structure with three translational degrees of freedom and is driven by three linear direct drives. The structure has been optimized with respect to workspace and transmission ratio. Additionally, in simulations with the FEM tool ANSYS different geometrical arrangements and combinations of flexure hinges have been investigated with respect to the dynamic behavior of the compliant mechanism. Due to the symmetrical character of the structure and the optimized design of the combined flexure hinges the structure is very stiff. The experimental measured repeatability of the compliant robot is below 0.3 ”m

    Achievement of recommended treatment targets for bone and mineral metabolism in haemodialysis patients using paricalcitol: An observational study

    Objective. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common problem among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on haemodialysis. This study was conducted to assess the use, effectiveness and safety of intravenous paricalcitol in haemodialysis patients with various degrees of SHPT. Material and methods. This observational, multicentre, prospective study was conducted in 14 Swedish dialysis centres from May 2007 to June 2008 and included 92 haemodialysis patients with a diagnosis of SHPT associated with CKD. The decision to initiate treatment with intravenous paricalcitol was made by the treating physician. No treatment algorithms were provided. Results. Mean patient age was 64 years. Of the 92 patients included, 74 had an intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) level of > 300 pg/ml at baseline. Median iPTH was 584 pg/ml in patients with a baseline PTH of > 300 pg/ml. During follow-up there was a decrease in iPTH to 323 pg/ml at 6 months (--45%, p < 0.0001). In parallel, there was a small increase in serum calcium, but serum phosphorus and the calcium xx phosphorus product remained unchanged. Conclusions. This study showed that intravenous paricalcitol substantially and safely decreased iPTH in haemodialysis patients with a baseline iPTH above the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative recommended target range (150--300 pg/ml) and had minimal impact on serum minerals
