    Comparative Investigations to Corrosion Fatigue of Al-Cu and Al-Mg-Si Alloys

    One of the serious problems encountered in the use of various materials in technology is the occurrence of fatigue phenomena as an undesirable material damage under cyclic mechanical load. For aluminium alloys this issue is of extremely high importance in case of their utilisation for aircraft purposes, e.g., where a very wide spectrum of frequencies occur. Moreover, the cyclic loading may be joined by the presence of specific electrolyte media. Therefore, the material candidates must be thoroughly examined in view of their sensitivity to fatigue as well as to corrosion fatigue. Usually, the Cu-containing alloy EN-AW 2024 T3 is applied besides 7075 T6 in Airbus aircrafts, but the weldable alloy 6013 T6 is considered to be a potential alternative. Referring to former investigations on the environmental sensitivity (ES) in the fatigue behaviour /1-6/ this paper brings up experimental findings as well as expanded considerations about damaging mechanisms and modelling. The situation with the alloy 6013 T6 is emphasized. The propagation of cracks under cyclic load in different environments, such as vacuum, air or aqueous media, is described by means of fracture mechanics. This enables discrimination in view of the influence of environmental factors and, hence, the participation of corrosion processes

    Nanostructural organization of naturally occurring composites - part II: silica-chitin-based biocomposites

    Investigations of the micro- and nanostructures and chemical composition of the sponge skeletons as examples for natural structural biocomposites are of fundamental scientific relevance. Recently, we show that some demosponges (Verongula gigantea, Aplysina sp.) and glass sponges (Farrea occa, Euplectella aspergillum) possess chitin as a component of their skeletons. The main practical approach we used for chitin isolation was based on alkali treatment of corresponding external layers of spicules sponge material with the aim of obtaining alkali-resistant compounds for detailed analysis. Here, we present a detailed study of the structural and physicochemical properties of spicules of the glass sponge Rossella fibulata. The structural similarity of chitin derived from this sponge to invertebrate alpha chitin has been confirmed by us unambiguously using physicochemical and biochemical methods. This is the first report of a silica-chitin composite biomaterial found in Rossella species. Finally, the present work includes a discussion related to strategies for the practical application of silica-chitin-based composites as biomaterials

    Podosome-Driven Defect Development in Lamellar Bone under the Conditions of Senile Osteoporosis Observed at the Nanometer Scale

    The degradation mechanism of human trabecular bone harvested from the central part of the femoral head of a patient with a fragility fracture of the femoral neck under conditions of senile osteoporosis was investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy. As evidenced by light microscopy, there is a disturbance of bone metabolism leading to severe and irreparable damages to the bone structure. These defects are evoked by osteoclasts and thus podosome activity. Podosomes create typical pit marks and holes of about 300-400 nm in diameter on the bone surface. Detailed analysis of the stress field caused by the podosomes in the extracellular bone matrix was performed. The calculations yielded maximum stress in the range of few megapascals resulting in formation of microcracks around the podosomes. Disintegration of hydroxyapatite and free lying collagen fibrils were observed at the edges of the plywood structure of the bone lamella. At the ultimate state, the disintegration of the mineralized collagen fibrils to a gelatinous matrix comes along with a delamination of the apatite nanoplatelets resulting in a brittle, porous bone structure. The nanoplatelets aggregate to big hydroxyapatite plates with a size of up to 10 x 20 Όm2. The enhanced plate growth can be explained by the interaction of two mechanisms in the ruffled border zone: the accumulation of delaminated hydroxyapatite nanoplatelets near clusters of podosomes and the accelerated nucleation and random growth of HAP nanoplatelets due to a nonsufficient concentration of process-directing carboxylated osteocalcin cOC. © 2021 The Authors.     Ultrahydrophobe chitosanstabilisierte Composite-Schichten auf Aluminiumwerkstoffen

    Selbstreinigende, ultrahydrophobe OberflĂ€chen lassen sich in der Technik vielfĂ€ltig einsetzen. Das ultrahydrophobe Verhalten beruht einerseits auf einer Rauigkeit im ÎŒm-Bereich und andererseits auf der chemischen Zusammensetzung der OberflĂ€che. Durch den gegebenen OberflĂ€chenaufbau sind derartige Materialien jedoch empfindlich gegen Verschleiß. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Schichtverbund bestehend aus Aluminiumoxid und zwei polymeren Komponenten vorgestellt. Die Aluminiumoxidschicht wird auf dem Wege der anodischen Oxidation erzeugt. Dieses seit langem bekannte Verfahren ermöglicht nicht nur die Oxidation der AluminiumoberflĂ€che, sondern gestattet es, auch, definierte OberflĂ€chenprofile einzustellen. Durch den gezielten Einbau des hochmolekularen Polymers Chitosan in die mikroprofilierte Aluminiumoxidschicht wurde eine mechanische Stabilisierung der Schicht im Sinne eines anorganisch-organischen Composites erreicht. Außerdem dienten die Amino-Seitengruppen des Chitosans als reaktives Interface fĂŒr die notwendige chemische Hydrophobierung und als Reaktionszentrum fĂŒr Vernetzungen, wodurch eine weitere mechanische Stabilisierung bewirkt wird.     Superhydrophobic Aluminum Surfaces: Preparation Routes, Properties and Artificial Weathering Impact

    Among the materials that can be treated in order to impart superhydrophobic properties are many originally hydrophilic metals. For this, they must undergo a sequential treatment, including roughening and hydrophobic coating. This contribution presents various preparation routes along with various characterization methods, such as dynamic contact angle (DCA) measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectroscopic techniques (FT–IRRAS, XPS, EIS). Micro-rough surfaces of pure and alloyed aluminum were generated most easily by using a modifie Sulfuric Acid Anodization under Intensifie conditions (SAAi). This produces a micro-mountain-like oxide morphology with peak-to-valley heights of 2 ÎŒm and sub-ÎŒm roughness components. Additionally, micro-embossed and micro-blasted surfaces were investigated. These micro-roughened initial states were chemically modifie with a solution of a hydrophobic compound, such as the reactive f uoroalkylsilane PFATES, the reactive alkyl group containing polymer POMA, or the polymer Teflo Âź AF. Alternatively, the chemical modificatio was made by a Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition (HFCVD) of a PTFE layer. The latter can form a considerably higher thickness than the wet-deposited coatings, without detrimental leveling effects being observed in comparison with the original micro-rough surface. The inherent and controllable morphology of the PTFE layers represents an important feature. The impacts of a standardized artificia weathering (WTH) on the wetting behavior and the surface-chemical properties were studied and discussed in terms of possible damage mechanisms. A very high stability of the superhydrophobicity was observed for the f uorinated wet-deposited PFATES and Teflo Âź AF coatings as well as for some of the PTFE layer variants, all on SAAi-pretreated substrates. Very good results were also obtained for specimens produced by appropriate mechanical roughening and PTFE coating

    Comparison of microfocus- and synchrotron x-ray tomography for the analysis of osteointgration around Ti6Al4V implants

    Micro-computed tomography (”CT) provides quantitative three-dimensional information of bone around titanium implants similar to classical histology. The study, based on an animal model, using cuboid-shaped biofunctionalised Ti6Al4V implants with surrounding bone after 4 weeks, is performed using 3 ”CT-systems with X-ray tubes, one synchrotron-radiation-based ”CT-system (SR”CT), and classical histology. Although the spatial resolution of the ”CTsystems is comparable, only the results of SR”CT agree with results of classical histology. The X-ray tube sources give rise to huge artefacts in the tomograms (interface scattering, beam hardening), which impaired the quantitative analysis of bone up to about 200 ”m from the implant surface. Due to the non-destructive character of ”CT the specimens can be subsequently examined by classical histology without restriction. The quantitative comparison of bone formation uncovers the strong dependence of the detected amount of newly formed bone from the selected slice. This implies the necessity of 3D analysis. SR”CT and classical histology prove that surface modifications of the titanium implant significantly influence the bone formation

    Selbstreinigende, ultrahydrophobe OberflĂ€chen lassen sich in der Technik vielfĂ€ltig einsetzen.
