    EFFECTS OF THREE PREPARATORY MOVEMENTS ON SIDEWARD PROPULSIVE MOVEMENT

    This study investigated the effects of three preparatory movements (squat, countermovement and hopping) on the sideward propulsive movement. Seven subjects were analyzed in 3-D to determine how fast they reacted to external signals, using three techniques, to reacl1 an aIming spot. The hopping and the countermovement types were considered better than the squat type in the propulsion. The hopping particularly showed the shortest duration from the external signal to take-off and also recorded high extension moments due to the pre-stretch mechanism for the push-off phase

    Modeling of endothelial cell dysfunction using human induced pluripotent stem cells derived from patients with end-stage renal disease

    Background Endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction is a frequent feature in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The aim of this study was to generate human induced pluripotent stem cells, differentiate ECs (hiPSC-ECs) from patients with ESRD, and appraise the usefulness of hiPSC-ECs as a model to investigate EC dysfunction. Methods We generated hiPSCs using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from three patients with ESRD and three healthy controls (HCs). Next, we differentiated hiPSC-ECs using the generated hiPSCs and assessed the expression of endothelial markers by immunofluorescence. The differentiation efficacy, EC dysfunction, and molecular signatures of EC-related genes based on microarray analysis were compared between the ESRD and HC groups. Results In both groups, hiPSCs and hiPSC-ECs were successfully obtained based on induced pluripotent stem cell or EC marker expression in immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. However, the efficiency of differentiation of ECs from hiPSCs was lower in the ESRD-hiPSCs than in the HC-hiPSCs. In addition, unlike HC-hiPSC-ECs, ESRD-hiPSC-ECs failed to form interconnecting branching point networks in an in vitro tube formation assay. During microarray analysis, transcripts associated with oxidative stress and inflammation were upregulated and transcripts associated with vascular development and basement membrane extracellular matrix components were downregulated in ESRD-hiPSC-ECs relative to in HC-hiPSC-ECs. Conclusion ESRD-hiPSC-ECs showed a greater level of EC dysfunction than HC-hiPSC-ECs did based on functional assay results and molecular profiles. hiPSC-ECs may be used as a disease model to investigate the pathophysiology of EC dysfunction in ESRD

    Female chromosome X mosaicism is age-related and preferentially affects the inactivated X chromosome

    To investigate large structural clonal mosaicism of chromosome X, we analysed the SNP microarray intensity data of 38,303 women from cancer genome-wide association studies (20,878 cases and 17,425 controls) and detected 124 mosaic X events >2 Mb in 97 (0.25%) women. Here we show rates for X-chromosome mosaicism are four times higher than mean autosomal rates; X mosaic events more often include the entire chromosome and participants with X events more likely harbour autosomal mosaic events. X mosaicism frequency increases with age (0.11% in 50-year olds; 0.45% in 75-year olds), as reported for Y and autosomes. Methylation array analyses of 33 women with X mosaicism indicate events preferentially involve the inactive X chromosome. Our results provide further evidence that the sex chromosomes undergo mosaic events more frequently than autosomes, which could have implications for understanding the underlying mechanisms of mosaic events and their possible contribution to risk for chronic diseases

    A case series of profilometric changes in two implant placement protocols at periodontally compromised non-molar sites

    Information regarding profilometric changes at a soft tissue level following implant placement with different protocols is insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to comparatively investigate the profilometric tissue changes with respect to late implant placement following alveolar ridge preservation (LP/ARP) and early implantation (EP) in periodontally compromised non-molar extraction sites. Sixteen patients were randomly assigned to the following groups: implant placement 4 months post-ARP (group LP/ARP) and tooth extraction and implant placement 4-8 weeks post-extraction (group EP). Dental impressions were obtained immediately after final prosthesis insertion and at 3, 6, and 12 months. At the time of implant placement, bone augmentation was performed in the majority of the patients. Profilometric changes of the tissue contour were minimal between the final prosthesis insertion and 12 months in the mid-facial area (0.04-0.35 mm in group LP/ARP, 0.04-0.19 mm in group EP). The overall tissue volume increased in both groups (1.70 mm3 in group LP/ARP, 0.96 mm3 in group EP). In conclusion, LP/ARP and EP led to similar stability of the peri-implant tissue contour between the final prosthesis insertion and at 12 months. Moreover, the change of peri-implant tissue on the soft tissue level was minimal in both modalities

    Three cases of cholesterol granuloma in the mandible

    Cholesterol granuloma is an unusual clinical entity described as an inflammatory granulation in response to the deposit of cholesterol crystals. It can develop in any portion of air cells within the temporal bone as a result of a lack of aeration and inadequate drainage, especially in the middle ear cavity. Here, we report very unusual three cases of cholesterol granuloma developed in mandible. In the first case a 68-year-old male with a large mass arising from the mandible was observed. Panoramic radiograph and computed tomography scans revealed a huge expanding lesion in the mandible. In the second case a 47-year-old female with a cystic lesion in the mandible was observed. And in the third case a 19-year-old male complaining atypical facial pain had a large lesion in the mandibular ramus. The histopathologic examinations of the cases showed numerous cholesterol crystals surrounded by multinucleated foreign body giant cells

    Effect of CaO Addition on Microstructural Evolution Due to the Annealing of AZ31 Alloys Processed by Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP)

    This study demonstrated the application of equal-channel angular processing (ECAP), which was performed via the BC route, to determine the effect of the addition of CaO on the microstructural evolution of an AZ31 alloy due to annealing. Compression tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the alloy, and the corresponding microstructures were observed to elucidate the flow behavior. Ca-bearing second-phase particles were fragmented with the increase in the number of ECAP passes. The increase in the yield strength and flow stress with the addition of CaO was attributed to the dispersion of the Ca-bearing second-phase particles. When the CaO-added AZ31 and commercial AZ31 alloys were subjected to annealing, their flow stress decreased owing to the grain growth. However, the extent of the decrease in the flow stress for the CaO-added AZ31 alloy was lower than that for the commercial AZ31 alloy

    Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guideline Update for Temporomandibular Disorders: An Evidence-Based Approach

    Many updated clinical research results have been published since the Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines (KMCPGs) for temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) were published in 2018. Therefore, it is necessary to update the existing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). This study presents updated recommendations for TMD treatment based on current research data published up to February 2020. The draft version of the level of evidence and grade of recommendation was determined through an assessment of the risk of bias and a meta-analysis of selected literature based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). The final guidelines were derived using the Delphi method. Eighteen recommendations were derived for eight items of Korean medicine treatment for TMDs. Compared with previous Korean medicine CPGs for TMDs, the grades of seven recommendations, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Chuna manual therapy, were increased. The grades of the two recommendations have been changed. Six new recommendations were added to fully reflect clinical reality. Acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Chuna manual therapy are recommended for TMD patients in clinical practice. Concurrent conventional conservative therapy with Korean medicine or a combination of Korean medicines should be considered in clinical practice in patients with temporomandibular disorders

    In-Situ Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Studies of Exchange-Bias Formations in Ferromagnetic/Antiferromagnetic Thin Film Systems

    We report on experimental investigations of exchange-bias formations in different layered structures of Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/FeMn/Ta and Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Co by in-situ visible light magneto-optical Kerr effect. It is found that exchange bias (a kind of unidirectional anisotropy) can be controlled by aligning the magnetization orientations of ferromagnetic layers during cooling through the blocking temperatures, as well as by applying a suffcient magnetic field during the film growth. For the structure of a magnetic NiFe/FeMn/Co trilayer, oppositely oriented exchange bias of the two ferromagnetic NiFe and Co layers is found to be set with the single antiferromagnetic FeMn layer through the oppositely oriented remnant magnetizations of the two ferromagnetic layers while cooling. These results reveal that the exchange bias and its unidirectional orientation can be determined by interfacial uncompensated antiferromagnetic spins in contact with ferromagnets, which are locked in by the magnetization orientations of ferromagnets during the film growth or subsequent cooling.close
