Space shuttle main engine: Interactive design challenges
The operating requirements established by NASA for the SSME were considerably more demanding than those for earlier rocket engines used in the military launch vehicles or Apollo program. The SSME, in order to achieve the high performance, low weight, long life, reusable objectives, embodied technical demands far in excess of its predecessor rocket engines. The requirements dictated the use of high combustion pressure and the staged combustion cycle which maximizes performance through total use of all propellants in the main combustion process. This approach presented a myriad of technical challenges for maximization of performance within attainable state of the art capabilities for operating pressures, operating temperatures and rotating machinery efficiencies. Controlling uniformity of the high pressure turbomachinery turbine temperature environment was a key challenge for thrust level and life capability demanding innovative engineering. New approaches in the design of the components were necessary to accommodate the multiple use, minimum maintenance objectives. Included were the use of line replaceable units to facilitate field maintenance automatic checkout and internal inspection capabilities
Chemical abundance study of two strongly s-process enriched post-AGB stars in the LMC: J051213.81-693537.1 and J051848.86-700246.9
Context: This paper is part of a larger project in which we study the
chemical abundances of extra-galactic post-AGB stars with the ultimate goal of
improving our knowledge of the poorly understood AGB third dredge-up mixing
processes and s-process nucleosynthesis. Aims: In this paper, we study two
carefully selected post-AGB stars in the LMC. The combination of favourable
atmospheric parameters for detailed abundance studies and their known distances
make these objects ideal probes of the internal AGB third dredge-up and
s-process nucleosynthesis in that they provide observational constraints for
theoretical AGB models. Methods: We use high-resolution optical UVES spectra to
determine accurate stellar parameters and perform detailed elemental abundance
studies. Additionally, we use available photometric data to construct SEDs for
reddening and luminosity determinations. We then estimate initial masses from
theoretical post-AGB tracks. Results: Both stars show extreme s-process
enrichment associated with relatively low C/O ratios of about 1.3. We could
only derive upper limits of the lead (Pb) abundance which indicate no strong Pb
overabundances with respect to other s-elements. Comparison with theoretical
post-AGB evolutionary tracks in the HR-diagram reveals that both stars have low
initial masses between 1.0 and 1.5 Msun. Conclusion: This study adds to the
results obtained so far on a very limited number of s-process enriched post-AGB
stars in the Magellanic Clouds. We find an increasing discrepancy between
observed and predicted Pb abundances towards lower metallicities for all
studied Magellanic Cloud post-AGB stars found so far, as well as moderate C/O
ratios. We find that all s-process rich post-AGB stars in the LMC and SMC
studied so far, cluster in the same region of the HR-diagram and are associated
with low-mass stars with a low metallicity on average.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

An evlauation of the three-dimensional split-film anemometer for measurements of atmospheric turbulence
A three-dimensional split-film anemometer was tested in turbulent, as well as in nonturbulent flow downstream from a wind tunnel turbulence grid. The data obtained with this probe in the turbulence behind the grid, indicated that the measured turbulence intensities were somewhat lower than the intensity measured with the conventional hot-wire anemometry; a result of the finite dimensions of the sensor arrays. The probe yaw angle was determined to be accurate within three degrees. Statistical averages, determined by mean-wind direction and vertical and lateral directions were computed on the basis of the probe yaw angle
Ultra-Low Amplitude Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud
The MACHO variables of LMC Field 77 that lie in the vicinity of the Cepheid
instability strip are reexamined. Among the 144 variables that we identify as
Cepheids we find 14 that have Fourier amplitudes <0.05 mag in the MACHO red
band, of which 7 have an amplitude <0.006 mag : we dub the latter group of
stars ultra-low amplitude (ULA) Cepheids. The variability of these objects is
verified by a comparison of the MACHO red with the MACHO blue lightcurves and
with those of the corresponding OGLE LMC stars. The occurrence of ULA Cepheids
is in agreement with theory. We have also discovered 2 low amplitude variables
whose periods are about a factor of 5--6 smaller than those of F Cepheids of
equal apparent magnitude. We suggest that these objects are Cepheids undergoing
pulsations in a surface mode and that they belong to a novel class of Strange
Cepheids (or Surface Mode Cepheids) whose existence was predicted by Buchler et

The valuation tool user guide: monetizing Cradle to Cradle®
This User Guide outlines the object, scope and expected deliverables from the Valuation Tool component of the Cradle to Cradle ® C2C BIZZ project. It describes the compendium of subtools that have been developed comprising: i) overview of funding tools; ii) C2C investment appraisal tool; and iii) C2C value indexing tool. The underpinning methodologies, as well as their inherent strengths and limitations are also described. The C2C BIZZ project as a whole aims specifically to promote and enhance the implementation of C2C methods in business site development within North Western Europe (NWE) (PAD, p.14). It is intended to infuse C2C notions into conventional site development, restructuring and management. The primary focus of the project is on planning, building and managing of business sites with C2C credentials (PAD, p.18) using sites in Lille Metropole (La Lainiere), London (London Sustainable Industries Park) and Luxemburg (Ecoparc Windhof) as experimental fields. C2C BIZZ is not concerned with the internal operations and activities of occupiers or users of the developed site. Accordingly, the scope of the valuation tool is confined to the planning, building and management of C2C sites. The deliverable from this component is a compendium of subtools (see Figure 1 below) that may be used to analyse the financial performance of C2C credentials in business sites to aid the making of a business case for such developments and evaluating the financial incentives for particular C2C site development projects. This entire work is premised on the argument that the wider adoption of C2C principles within the built environment depends on the rate of uptake by the private sector. The private sector, being profit driven, are likely to engage in C2C site development if they are convinced of its capacity to contribute to their business goals which ultimately is a return on their investment. The tool development described in this document attempts to provide a framework for collating an evidence base that can assist in articulating the business case for C2C in business site developments

Mechanical Properties and Biological Responses of Bioactive Glass Ceramics Processed using Indirect SLS
This paper will report on research which aims to generate bone replacement components by
processing bioactive glass-ceramic powders using indirect selective laser sintering. The indirect
SLS route has been chosen as it offers the ability to tailor the shape of the implant to the
implantation site, and two bioactive glass ceramic materials have been processed through this
route: apatite-mullite and apatite-wollostanite. The results of bend tests, to investigate
mechanical properties, and in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate biological responses of
the materials will be reported, and the suitability of completed components for implant will be

Spectropolarimetry of the H-alpha line in Herbig Ae/Be stars
Using the HiVIS spectropolarimeter built for the Haleakala 3.7m AEOS
telescope, we have obtained a large number of high precision spectropolarimetrc
observations (284) of Herbig AeBe stars collected over 53 nights totaling more
than 300 hours of observing. Our sample of five HAeBe stars: AB Aurigae,
MWC480, MWC120, MWC158 and HD58647, all show systematic variations in the
linear polarization amplitude and direction as a function of time and
wavelength near the H-alpha line. In all our stars, the H-alpha line profiles
show evidence of an intervening disk or outflowing wind, evidenced by strong
emission with an absorptive component. The linear polarization varies by 0.2%
to 1.5% with the change typically centered in the absorptive part of the line
profile. These observations are inconsistent with a simple disk-scattering
model or a depolarization model which produce polarization changes centered on
the emmissive core. We speculate that polarized absorption via optical pumping
of the intervening gas may be the cause.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Tracing the development of dust around evolved stars: The case of 47 Tuc
We observed mid-infrared (7.5-22 mum) spectra of AGB stars in the globular
cluster 47 Tuc with the Spitzer telescope and find significant dust features of
various types. Comparison of the characteristics of the dust spectra with the
location of the stars in a logP-K-diagram shows that dust mineralogy and
position on the AGB are related. A 13 mum feature is seen in spectra of low
luminosity AGB stars. More luminous AGB stars show a broad feature at 11.5 mum.
The spectra of the most luminous stars are dominated by the amorphous silicate
bending vibration centered at 9.7 mum. For 47 Tuc AGB stars, we conclude that
early on the AGB dust consisting primarily of Mg-, Al- and Fe oxides is formed.
With further AGB evolution amorphous silicates become the dominant species.Comment: 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
