Implementation of U.K. Earth system models for CMIP6
We describe the scientific and technical implementation of two models for a core set of
experiments contributing to the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6).
The models used are the physical atmosphere-land-ocean-sea ice model HadGEM3-GC3.1 and the
Earth system model UKESM1 which adds a carbon-nitrogen cycle and atmospheric chemistry to
HadGEM3-GC3.1. The model results are constrained by the external boundary conditions (forcing data)
and initial conditions. We outline the scientific rationale and assumptions made in specifying these.
Notable details of the implementation include an ozone redistribution scheme for prescribed ozone
simulations (HadGEM3-GC3.1) to avoid inconsistencies with the model's thermal tropopause, and land use
change in dynamic vegetation simulations (UKESM1) whose influence will be subject to potential biases in
the simulation of background natural vegetation. We discuss the implications of these decisions for
interpretation of the simulation results. These simulations are expensive in terms of human and CPU
resources and will underpin many further experiments; we describe some of the technical steps taken to
ensure their scientific robustness and reproducibility
Very Low Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-Like Stars From MARVELS V: A Low Eccentricity Brown Dwarf from the Driest Part of the Desert, MARVELS-6b
We describe the discovery of a likely brown dwarf (BD) companion with a
minimum mass of 31.7 +/- 2.0 M_Jup to GSC 03546-01452 from the MARVELS radial
velocity survey, which we designate as MARVELS-6b. For reasonable priors, our
analysis gives a probability of 72% that MARVELS-6b has a mass below the
hydrogen-burning limit of 0.072 M_Sun, and thus it is a high-confidence BD
companion. It has a moderately long orbital period of 47.8929 +0.0063/-0.0062
days with a low eccentricty of 0.1442 +0.0078/-0.0073, and a semi-amplitude of
1644 +12/-13 m/s. Moderate resolution spectroscopy of the host star has
determined the following parameters: T_eff = 5598 +/- 63, log g = 4.44 +/-
0.17, and [Fe/H] = +0.40 +/- 0.09. Based upon these measurements, GSC
03546-01452 has a probable mass and radius of M_star = 1.11 +/- 0.11 M_Sun and
R_star = 1.06 +/- 0.23 R_Sun with an age consistent with less than ~6 Gyr at a
distance of 219 +/- 21 pc from the Sun. Although MARVELS-6b is not observed to
transit, we cannot definitively rule out a transiting configuration based on
our observations. There is a visual companion detected with Lucky Imaging at
7.7 arcsec from the host star, but our analysis shows that it is not bound to
this system. The minimum mass of MARVELS-6b exists at the minimum of the mass
functions for both stars and planets, making this a rare object even compared
to other BDs.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. Accepted for publication in The

Measurements of electron-proton elastic cross sections for
We report on precision measurements of the elastic cross section for
electron-proton scattering performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The
measurements were made at 28 unique kinematic settings covering a range in
momentum transfer of 0.4 5.5 . These measurements
represent a significant contribution to the world's cross section data set in
the range where a large discrepancy currently exists between the ratio of
electric to magnetic proton form factors extracted from previous cross section
measurements and that recently measured via polarization transfer in Hall A at
Jefferson Lab.Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures; text added, some figures replace
Ninth and Tenth Order Virial Coefficients for Hard Spheres in D Dimensions
We evaluate the virial coefficients B_k for k<=10 for hard spheres in
dimensions D=2,...,8. Virial coefficients with k even are found to be negative
when D>=5. This provides strong evidence that the leading singularity for the
virial series lies away from the positive real axis when D>=5. Further analysis
provides evidence that negative virial coefficients will be seen for some k>10
for D=4, and there is a distinct possibility that negative virial coefficients
will also eventually occur for D=3.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figure
A Study of the Quasi-elastic (e,e'p) Reaction on C, Fe and Au
We report the results from a systematic study of the quasi-elastic (e,e'p)
reaction on C, Fe and Au performed at Jefferson Lab. We
have measured nuclear transparency and extracted spectral functions (corrected
for radiation) over a Q range of 0.64 - 3.25 (GeV/c) for all three
nuclei. In addition we have extracted separated longitudinal and transverse
spectral functions at Q of 0.64 and 1.8 (GeV/c) for these three nuclei
(except for Au at the higher Q). The spectral functions are
compared to a number of theoretical calculations. The measured spectral
functions differ in detail but not in overall shape from most of the
theoretical models. In all three targets the measured spectral functions show
considerable excess transverse strength at Q = 0.64 (GeV/c), which is
much reduced at 1.8 (GeV/c).Comment: For JLab E91013 Collaboration, 19 pages, 20 figures, 3 table
17ÎČ-Oestradiol treatment modulates nitric oxide synthase activity in MDA231 tumour with implications on growth and radiation response
The putative oestrogen receptor negative human breast cancer cell line MDA231, when grown as tumours in mice continually receiving 17ÎČ-oestradiol, showed substantially increased growth rate when compared to control animals. Further, we observed that 17ÎČ-oestradiol treatment could both increase the growth rate of established MDA231 tumours as well as decreasing the time taken for initiating tumour growth. We have also demonstrated that this increase in growth rate is accompanied by a four-fold increase in nitric oxide synthase activity, which was predominantly the inducible form. Inducible-nitric oxide synthase expression in these tumours was confirmed by immunohistochemical analysis and appeared localized primarily in areas between viable and necrotic regions of the tumour (an area that is presumably hypoxic). Prophylactic treatment with the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor nitro-L-arginine methyl ester resulted in significant reduction in this apparent 17ÎČ-oestradiol-mediated growth promoting effect. Tumours derived from mice receiving 17ÎČ-oestradiol-treatment were characterized by a significantly lower fraction of perfused blood vessels and an indication of an increased hypoxic fraction. Consistent with these observations, 17ÎČ-oestradiol-treated tumours were less radio-responsive compared to control tumours when treated with a single radiation dose of 15âGy. Our data suggests that long-term treatment with oestrogen could significantly alter the tumour oxygenation status during breast tumour progression, thus affecting response to radiotherapy
Measurements of Deuteron Photodisintegration up to 4.0 GeV
The first measurements of the differential cross section for the d(gamma,p)n
reaction up to 4.0 GeV were performed at Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator
Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. We report the cross sections at the proton
center-of-mass angles of 36, 52, 69 and 89 degrees. These results are in
reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energy. The 89 and 69
degree data show constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon
energy. The 36 and 52 degree data disagree with the counting rule behavior. The
quantum chromodynamics (QCD) model of nuclear reactions involving reduced
amplitudes disagrees with the present data.Comment: 5 pages (REVTeX), 1 figure (postscript
