Agent-based computational modeling of wounded epithelial cell monolayers
Computational modeling of biological systems, or âin silico biologyâ is an emerging tool for understanding structure and order in biological tissues. Computational models of the behavior of epithelial cells in monolayer cell culture have been developed and used to predict the healing characteristics of scratch wounds made to urothelial cell cultures maintained in low and physiological [Ca2+] environments. Both computational models and in vitro experiments demonstrated that in low exogenous [Ca2+], the closure of 500mm scratch wounds was achieved primarily by cell migration into the denuded area. The wound healing rate in low (0.09mM) [Ca2+] was approximately twice as rapid as in physiological (2mM) [Ca2+]. Computational modeling predicted that in cell cultures that are actively proliferating, no increase in the fraction of cells in S-phase would be expected, and this conclusion was supported experimentally in vitro by BrdU incorporation assay. We have demonstrated that a simple rule-based model of cell behavior, incorporating rules relating to contact inhibition of proliferation and migration, is sufficient to qualitatively predict the calcium-dependent pattern of wound closure observed in vitro. Differences between the in vitro and in silico models suggest a role for wound-induced signaling events in urothelial cell cultures
Woodland Survey of Great Britain 1971-2001
The Woodland Survey of Great Britain is a unique data set, consisting of a detailed range of ecological
measurements at a national scale, covering a time span of 30 years. A set of 103 woods spread across
Britain were first surveyed in 1971, which were again surveyed in 2000â2003 (for convenience referred to
subsequently as the â2001 surveyâ). Standardised methods of describing the trees, shrubs, ground flora, soils
and general habitats present were used for both sets of surveys. The sample of 1648 plots spread through 103
woodland sites located across Britain makes it probably the most extensive quantitative ecological woodland
survey undertaken in Britain; it is also notable for the range of sites that have been revisited after such a long
interval. The data set provides a unique opportunity to explore the effects of a range of potential drivers of woodland
change that operated between 1971 and 2001. The data set is available in four discrete parts, which have

The Epitheliome: agent-based modelling of the social behaviour of cells
We have developed a new computational modelling paradigm for predicting the emergent behaviour
resulting from the interaction of cells in epithelial tissue. As proof-of-concept, an agent-based model,
in which there is a one-to-one correspondence between biological cells and software agents, has been
coupled to a simple physical model. Behaviour of the computational model is compared with the
growth characteristics of epithelial cells in monolayer culture, using growth media with low and
physiological calcium concentrations. Results show a qualitative fit between the growth characteristics
produced by the simulation and the in vitro cell models

Entrainment of the Melatonin Rhythms in Early Postnatal Lambs and Their Mothers
Although the developing sheep can produce an appropriately timed melatonin rhythm as early as 1 week after birth, it is not known whether the lamb is able to adjust its melatonin rhythm to a change in daylength. The ability of the young lamb to entrain its pattern of melatonin secretion to a new photoperiod was determined in the present study. Eight female lambs and their mothers were raised in long days (LD 16:8) beginning 2 weeks post partum. At 7 weeks of age, the time of lights-off was advanced 8 hr, the short-day photoperiod then being LD 8:16; the time of lights-on remained unchanged. Concentrations of melatonin were measured in blood samples collected hourly on days - 1, 0, 2, 4, 6, and 13 relative to the light change. On day 0, all mothers and daughters had advanced the onset of melatonin secretion by at least 1 hr, and by day 13, 12 of 16 had completely entrained to the new photoperiod. The rate of entrainment among individuals varied; the mean rate for lambs and mothers did not differ.
