    DPRS transformer - Dynamic pressure resistant system - Part I

    In general, a transformer is designed and manufactured to operate under normal conditions. However, unexpected fault events occur due to various reasons in real-life substations. When such events do occur, an electric arc inside a transformer vaporizes the insulating oil, leading to a generation of very high expansion pressure. Once this pressure exceeds the designed threshold, the tank is then compromised, and oil starts to leak, becoming a potential cause of fire or explosion. DPRS (Dynamic Pressure Resistant System) transformer has been developed to cope with such unexpected events. In general, a PRD (Pressure Relief Device) is installed on a transformer to stabilize the pressure inside the tank. However, it requires a certain amount of time for this device to operate. DPRS transformer is designed to withstand the immediate pressure increase without severely damaging the tank (severe enough to cause an oil leak) until the PRD starts operating. Although not as much as to cause a leak, the tank will still be deformed as a result of the pressure increase. Then, insulating oil expanded by the arc is emitted safely through a designated path as the PRD starts to operate. DPRS transformer does not require additional equipment to prevent damage to the tank and is also capable of preventing fire while maintaining a similar configuration to common transformers. Due to these merits, the global demand for DPRS transformers is steadily increasing. In this article, the DPRS transformer tank design procedure and tank deformation prediction technology are presented. Additionally, a brief introduction to the explosion-proof performance verification test is addressed

    We hypothesize that decreased surface coverage of Cu atoms prevent the alloy from forming appreciable amounts of hydrocarbons. To understand the origin of this effect, we proposed to study CO2 reduction on copper-palladium alloy thin film catalysts with controllable compositions. By systemically correlating surface composition to activity, we will understand to how to rationally design copper-based alloys that show high performance and selectivity for fuel formation

    Audiological Follow-up Results after Newborn Hearing Screening Program

    ObjectivesTo investigate the validity of newborn hearing screening protocol using automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) with a confirmation method using click auditory brainstem response (ABR) and to evaluate changes in hearing status of infants with confirmed congenital hearing loss.MethodsNeonates in the well-baby nursery were screened by staged AABR. Subjects whose final AABR result was "refer" were tested by diagnostic click ABR and 226 Hz tympanometry within 3 months of age. Changes in hearing status of subjects with confirmed hearing loss were analyzed by follow-up ABR at 3-6 month intervals.ResultsOf the 12,193 healthy babies born during this period, 10,879 (89.22%) were screened by AABR. Of 10,879 neonates screened by AABR, 148 (1.36%) were "referred"; of these, 45 subjects showed ABR thresholds over 30 dB nHL in at least one ear. Thirty-four subjects underwent serial follow-up ABR tests, with 11 (32.4%) found to have normal ABR thresholds. Most subjects with mild to moderate hearing loss were found to be normal before 1 year of age, whereas all infants with severe or profound hearing loss were identified as having congenital hearing loss.ConclusionThe referral rate and the positive predictive value of our protocol were acceptable. We have also found here that substantial temporary hearing loss can be included in the first confirmative diagnosis. Temporary hearing loss of our study on follow-up give emphasis to need of further differentiation using the testing for bone conduction and middle ear status

    A Study on the Factors That Influence the Acoustic Performance of a Steel Stud Wall Assembly

    With the recent introduction of light gauge steel framing systems in the concrete-dominated Korean construction industry, more buildings are built with drywall that is mainly composed of steel studs and gypsum boards. While load-bearing steel studs are extensively applied in residential construction, nonload-bearing steel studs are applied in various building fields such as commercial, educational, as well as residential. As building projects involving steel stud walls are becoming to increase, higher demands in performance are requested from architects and builders, especially in the field of sound performance. A series of acoustic test were performed in the nationally certified sound-testing laboratory at Korean Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) in order to evaluate and analyze factors that influence acoustic performance of steel stud wall assemblies. Factors affecting the acoustic performance of steel stud walls that are analyzed in this paper include among others, the composition and structure of steel studs, stud spacing, stud thickness, stud size, use of resilient channel, screw spacing, etc. Factors relating to gypsum boards that were tested as part of the evaluation of acoustic performance are not included in this paper. Results of this study, which is co-funded by 3 major gypsum board companies in Korea, are being used to develop stud wall assemblies that meet the required acoustic performance for unit-to-unit separating walls, as well as present architects and builders with a better understanding on the sound behavior of steel stud drywall

    Clinical Comparison of the Auditory Steady-State Response with the Click Auditory Brainstem Response in Infants

    ObjectivesOur goal was to determine the effectiveness of using the auditory steady state response (ASSR) as a measure of hearing thresholds in infants who are suspected of having significant hearing loss, as compared with using the click-auditory brainstem response (C-ABR).MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the audiologic profiles of 76 infants (46 boys and 30 girls, a total of 151 ears) who ranged in age from 1 to 12 months (average age: 5.7 months). The auditory evaluations in 76 infants who were suspected of having hearing loss were done via the C-ABR and ASSR. In addition, for reference, the mean ASSR thresholds were compared to those of 39 ears of infants and 39 ears of adults with normal hearing at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz.ResultsThe highest correlation between the C-ABR and ASSR thresholds was observed at an average of 2-4 kHz (r=0.94). On comparison between the hearing of infants and adults at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz, the mean ASSR threshold in infants was 12, 7, 8, and 7 dB higher, respectively, than that in adults.ConclusionASSR testing may provide additional audiometric information for accurately predicting the hearing sensitivity, and this is essential for the management of infants with severe to profound hearing loss

    Anticancer Effects of the Marine Sponge Lipastrotethya

    Interest in marine bioresources is increasing in the drug development sector. In particular, marine sponges produce a wide range of unique metabolites that enable them to survive in challenging environments, which makes them attractive sources of candidate pharmaceuticals. In previous study, we investigated over 40 marine specimens collected in Micronesia and provided by the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, for their antiproliferative effects on various cancer cell lines, and Lipastrotethya sp. extract (LSSE) was found to have a marked antiproliferative effect. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism responsible for its anticancer effect on wild-type p53 (WT) or p53 knockout (KO) HCT116 cells. LSSE inhibited cell viability and induced apoptotic cell death more so in HCT116 p53 KO cells than the WT. HCT116 WT cells treated with LSSE underwent apoptosis associated with the induction of p53 and its target genes. On the other hand, in HCT116 p53 KO cells, LSSE reduced mTOR and Bcl-2 and increased Beclin-1 and LC3-II protein levels, suggesting autophagy induction. These results indicate that the mechanisms responsible for the anticancer effect of LSSE depend on p53 status
