    The Role of Finite Element Analysis in Studying Potential Failure of Mandibular Reconstruction Methods

    Defects of the mandible occur after trauma or resection after infection or tumours. There have been many methods espoused, but many methods can fail especially if the biomechanics of the mandible is not considered fully. As the only moveable, load-bearing bone of the skull, the mandible is subject to loads and stresses unique to it due to its shape, location and function. This chapter reviews the basic knowledge of the mandible necessary to perform finite element analysis, the challenges and then reviews several studies that have been done. The authors’ personal research is detailed to illustrate how finite element analysis can be used to look at potential failure of a new method for mandibular reconstruction and implant evaluation

    Teaching English as a service learning experience : the design and implementation of a service learning subject

    This paper reports on how a service learning subject for English majors in a university in Hong Kong was developed and piloted. Studies in learning through community service in tertiary education in Hong Kong have shown that students have benefited tremendously (Ngai, 2006; Chan, Lee & Ma, 2009; Lai, 2009; Chan, 2012). Service learning can be defined as “… an active form of teaching and learning in which all involved, namely the students, faculty, community sponsors, mentors, and those served, engage together in activities, that address human and community needs, with structured opportunities designed to promote learning and the development of all.” (Permaul, 2009). It is along these lines that a subject entitled “Teaching English as a Service Learning Experience” was designed for a group of English majors. The aim is to raise students’ awareness of civic engagement and to cultivate their social responsibility through designing English language learning programs to help some members in the community. 22 students and four collaborating NGOs were involved in the pilot run of this subject. These students, under the supervision of the teachers and in consultation with the NGO co-ordinators, designed and delivered some English programmes for their clients, who are mainly children and young adults from under-privileged groups. From students’ feedback through their reflective journals and group report-back presentations, it was evident that students became more aware of their responsibilities for the community. They have also developed a strong sense of empathy for other members in the society. They were glad that they could apply their knowledge in English to help the needy. Some of them have become so “engaged” in serving the community that they continued to help some NGOs to teach English even after the completion of the SL projects. Feedback from the four collaborating NGOs was also positive. They appreciated the service that the students provided and would like to continue the collaboration. One area that needs improvement is that longer time is needed for planning the SL projects. All in all, all parties involved in the pilot run of the subject found that the experience was very valuable. 1

    Pigment epithelium-derived factor in the monkey retinal pigment epithelium and interphotoreceptor matrix: apical secretion and distribution

    Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is an extracellular protein derived from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a tissue formed by polarized cells that release growth and trophic factors in a directional fashion. We have investigated the distribution and directional release of PEDF protein by the monkey RPE. We established primary cultures of monkey RPE cells that expressed the PEDF gene, and that synthesized and secreted the PEDF protein. Northern analysis of RPE cultures and monkey ocular tissues showed that PEDF transcripts were highly expressed in RPE as compared with several other monkey ocular tissues, being even more abundant in cultured cells than they were in the native RPE. The differentiated RPE cells in culture secreted protein that shared the immunological, biochemical and biological characteristics of PEDF. The overall PEDF levels in the RPE conditioned media reached 6.5 mg ml- after 8 days in culture (i.e. 1.1 pg of PEDF per RPE cell). RPE cells were cultivated on permeable supports as monolayers forming a barrier between apical and basal compartments. Apical and basal culture media were sampled at three or four-day intervals for 18 cycles, and the PEDF content was quantified. Most of the PEDF protein was significantly higher in the apical than in the basal medium (>4 times) at the initial recovery intervals, to be detected only in the apical medium at the latter intervals. In the native monkey eye, the concentration of soluble PEDF in the interphotoreceptor matrix (144 nM) was 7-fold and 25-fold greater than in vitreous and aqueous, respectively. PEDF was abundant in the interphotoreceptor matrix surrounding rod and cone outer segments, and was detectable at lower levels in the RPE as visualized by confocal microscopy. We concluded that PEDF synthesized by the RPE is secreted preferentially from the apical surface and is distributed apically to the RPE bordering the outer segments of photoreceptors. PEDF can be a useful marker for RPE polarization and differentiation. The polarization of RPE may be an important mechanism to control PEDF secretion and our results offer interesting possibilities on regulation of PEDF

    Galaxy Zoo : Building the low-mass end of the red sequence with local post-starburst galaxies

    We present a study of local post-starburst galaxies (PSGs) using the photometric and spectroscopic observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the results from the Galaxy Zoo project. We find that the majority of our local PSG population have neither early- nor late-type morphologies but occupy a well-defined space within the colour-stellar mass diagram, most notably, the low-mass end of the 'green valley' below the transition mass thought to be the mass division between low-mass star-forming galaxies and high-mass passively evolving bulge-dominated galaxies. Our analysis suggests that it is likely that local PSGs will quickly transform into 'red', low-mass early-type galaxies as the stellar morphologies of the 'green' PSGs largely resemble that of the early-type galaxies within the same mass range. We propose that the current population of PSGs represents a population of galaxies which is rapidly transitioning between the star-forming and the passively evolving phases. Subsequently, these PSGs will contribute towards the build-up of the low-mass end of the 'red sequence' once the current population of young stars fade and stars are no longer being formed. These results are consistent with the idea of 'downsizing' where the build-up of smaller galaxies occurs at later epochs.Peer reviewe

    Wintertime CO2 Emission from Soils of Northeastern Siberia

    The emission of C02 from northeastern Siberian soil was estimated for the period December 1989 to February 1990. Concentrations of air CO2 near the ground and 1 m above the snow cover were measured by an infrared gas analyzer. Fluxes of CO2 across the snow cover were calculated from the differences of these two values and the predetermined CO2 transfer coefficients at various flux rates through a layer of snow. Temperature and moisture content of the soil profiles were also observed simultaneously. The average transfer coefficient of CO2 for packed snow measured in the winter of 1989/90 was about 0.28 sq. cm/s. This value was used to estimate the average CO2 flux from soil: 0.26 g C/sq. m/day in December 1989, 0.13 g C/sq. m/day in January 1990 and 0.07 g C/sq. m/day in February 1990. Thus a minimal total of about 13.8 g C/sq. m had been released from the tundra soil during the 90 days from December 1989 to February 1990. Using the study by Kelley et al. (1968) and assuming that the minimal CO2 transfer coefficient is also applicable for the entire tundra and Northern Taiga zones between September and June, the total emission from this region would amount to 0.23 x 10**15 g of carbon. The main source of this CO2 probably originated from microbial oxidation of soil organic matter. This assertion is supported by the existence of a relatively warm layer in the frozen soil at 40-120 cm depth. This warm layer was about 10-40 C higher than the ambient air, or about 5-10 C higher than the soil surface, and its moisture content was also higher than the surrounding layers.Key words: CO2 flux, Siberian tundra, soil temperature, moisture contentOn a évalué l'émission de CO2 provenant du sol dans le nord-est sibérien, durant la période allant de décembre 1989 à février 1990. On a calculé les flux du CO2 à travers le couvert nival à partir des différences de ces deux valeurs et des coefficients de transfert du CO2 prédéterminés pour divers taux de flux à travers une couche de neige. On a aussi observé simultanément la température et la teneur en humidité des profils pédologiques. Le coefficient de transfert moyen du CO2 pour la neige tassée mesuré durant l'hiver de 1989-90 était d'environ 0,28 cm²/s. Cette valeur a servi à estimer le flux moyen du CO2 provenant du sol: 0,26 g C/m²/jour en décembre 1989, 0,13 g C/m²/jour en janvier 1990 et 0,07 g C/m²/jour en février 1990. Par conséquent, un total minimal d'environ 13,8 g C/m² a été libéré du sol de la toundra au cours des 90 jours allant de décembre à février 1990. En nous servant de l'étude menée précédemment par Kelley et al. (1968) et en supposant que le coefficient minimal de transfert du CO2 s'applique aussi à l'ensemble des zones de toundra et de taïga septentrionale entre septembre et juin, l'émission totale provenant de cette région se monterait à 0,23 x 10**15 g de carbone.     Singapore's health-care system:key features, challenges, and shifts

    Since Singapore became an independent nation in 1965, the development of its health-care system has been underpinned by an emphasis on personal responsibility for health, and active government intervention to ensure access and affordability through targeted subsidies and to reduce unnecessary costs. Singapore is achieving good health outcomes, with a total health expenditure of 4·47% of gross domestic product in 2016. However, the health-care system is contending with increased stress, as reflected in so-called pain points that have led to public concern, including shortages in acute hospital beds and intermediate and long-term care (ILTC) services, and high out-of-pocket payments. The main drivers of these challenges are the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases and rapid population ageing, limitations in the delivery and organisation of primary care and ILTC, and financial incentives that might inadvertently impede care integration. To address these challenges, Singapore's Ministry of Health implemented a comprehensive set of reforms in 2012 under its Healthcare 2020 Masterplan. These reforms substantially increased the capacity of public hospital beds and ILTC services in the community, expanded subsidies for primary care and long-term care, and introduced a series of financing health-care reforms to strengthen financial protection and coverage. However, it became clear that these measures alone would not address the underlying drivers of system stress in the long term. Instead, the system requires, and is making, much more fundamental changes to its approach.     NEW SEISMIC SOURCE ZONE MODEL FOR PORTUGAL AND AZORES

    The development of seismogenic source models is one of the first steps in seismic hazard assessment. In seismic hazard terminology, seismic source zones (SSZ) are polygons (or volumes) that delineate areas with homogeneous characteristics of seismicity. The importance of using knowledge on geology, seismicity and tectonics in the definition of source zones has been recognized for a long time [1]. However, the definition of SSZ tends to be subjective and controversial. Using SSZ based on broad geology, by spreading the seismicity clusters throughout the areal extent of a zone, provides a way to account for possible long-term non-stationary seismicity behavior [2,3]. This approach effectively increases seismicity rates in regions with no significant historical or instrumental seismicity, while decreasing seismicity rates in regions that display higher rates of seismicity. In contrast, the use of SSZ based on concentrations of seismicity or spatial smoothing results in stationary behavior [4]. In the FP7 Project SHARE (Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe), seismic hazard will be assessed with a logic tree approach that allows for three types of branches for seismicity models: a) smoothed seismicity, b) SSZ, c) SSZ and faults. In this context, a large-scale zonation model for use in the smoothed seismicity branch, and a new consensus SSZ model for Portugal and Azores have been developed. The new models were achieved with the participation of regional experts by combining and adapting existing models and incorporating new regional knowledge of the earthquake potential. The main criteria used for delineating the SSZ include distribution of seismicity, broad geological architecture, crustal characteristics (oceanic versus continental, tectonically active versus stable, etc.), historical catalogue completeness, and the characteristics of active or potentially-active faults. This model will be integrated into an Iberian model of SSZ to be used in the Project SHARE seismic hazard assessment

    We study wear-leveling techniques for cuckoo hashing, showing that it is possible to achieve a memory wear bound of loglogn+O(1)\log\log n+O(1) after the insertion of nn items into a table of size CnCn for a suitable constant CC using cuckoo hashing.     Modeling radiative and non-radiative pathways at both the Franck–Condon and Herzberg–Teller approximation level

    Here, we present a concise model that can predict the photoluminescent properties of a given compound from first principles, both within and beyond the Franck–Condon approximation. The formalism required to compute fluorescence, Internal Conversion (IC), and Inter-System Crossing (ISC) is discussed. The IC mechanism, in particular, is a difficult pathway to compute due to difficulties associated with the computation of required bosonic configurations and non-adiabatic coupling elements. Here, we offer a discussion and breakdown on how to model these pathways at the Density Functional Theory (DFT) level with respect to its computational implementation, strengths, and current limitations. The model is then used to compute the photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of a number of small but important compounds: anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP), and Perylene Diimide (PDI) within a polarizable continuum model. Rate constants for fluorescence, IC, and ISC compare well for the most part with respect to experiment, despite triplet energies being overestimated to a degree. The resulting PLQYs are promising with respect to the level of theory being DFT. While we obtained a positive result for PDI within the Franck–Condon limit, the other systems require a second order correction. Recomputing quantum yields with Herzberg–Teller terms yields PLQYs of 0.19, 0.08, 0.04, 0.70, and 0.99 for anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, DPP, and PDI, respectively. Based on these results, we are confident that the presented methodology is sound with respect to the level of quantum chemistry and presents an important stepping stone in the search for a tool to predict the properties of larger coupled systems
