Analysis and computer programs to calculate acoustic wave properties of baffled chambers
Analytical methods and four computer programs have been developed for calculating wave motion in closed, baffled chambers with rigid and non-rigid boundaries. Application of these methods to design of injector-face baffles in liquid propellant engines will provide significant insight into effects of baffles on combustion stability
Quantification of food intake in Drosophila
Measurement of food intake in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is often necessary for studies of behaviour, nutrition and drug administration. There is no reliable and agreed method for measuring food intake of flies in undisturbed, steady state, and normal culture conditions. We report such a method, based on measurement of feeding frequency by proboscis-extension, validated by short-term measurements of food dye intake. We used the method to demonstrate that (a) female flies feed more frequently than males, (b) flies feed more often when housed in larger groups and (c) fly feeding varies at different times of the day. We also show that alterations in food intake are not induced by dietary restriction or by a null mutation of the fly insulin receptor substrate chico. In contrast, mutation of takeout increases food intake by increasing feeding frequency while mutation of ovoD increases food intake by increasing the volume of food consumed per proboscis-extension. This approach provides a practical and reliable method for quantification of food intake in Drosophila under normal, undisturbed culture conditions
Cold-air performance of a 15.41-cm-tip-diameter axial-flow power turbine with variable-area stator designed for a 75-kW automotive gas turbine engine
An experimental evaluation of the aerodynamic performance of the axial flow, variable area stator power turbine stage for the Department of Energy upgraded automotive gas turbine engine was conducted in cold air. The interstage transition duct, the variable area stator, the rotor, and the exit diffuser were included in the evaluation of the turbine stage. The measured total blading efficiency was 0.096 less than the design value of 0.85. Large radial gradients in flow conditions were found at the exit of the interstage duct that adversely affected power turbine performance. Although power turbine efficiency was less than design, the turbine operating line corresponding to the steady state road load power curve was within 0.02 of the maximum available stage efficiency at any given speed

Effect of a standardised dietary restriction protocol on multiple laboratory strains of Drosophila melanogaster
Background:
Outcomes of lifespan studies in model organisms are particularly susceptible to variations in technical procedures. This is especially true of dietary restriction, which is implemented in many different ways among laboratories.
Principal Findings:
In this study, we have examined the effect of laboratory stock maintenance, genotype differences and microbial infection on the ability of dietary restriction (DR) to extend life in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. None of these factors block the DR effect.
Conclusions:
These data lend support to the idea that nutrient restriction genuinely extends lifespan in flies, and that any mechanistic discoveries made with this model are of potential relevance to the determinants of lifespan in other organisms
Inference and Optimization of Real Edges on Sparse Graphs - A Statistical Physics Perspective
Inference and optimization of real-value edge variables in sparse graphs are
studied using the Bethe approximation and replica method of statistical
physics. Equilibrium states of general energy functions involving a large set
of real edge-variables that interact at the network nodes are obtained in
various cases. When applied to the representative problem of network resource
allocation, efficient distributed algorithms are also devised. Scaling
properties with respect to the network connectivity and the resource
availability are found, and links to probabilistic Bayesian approximation
methods are established. Different cost measures are considered and algorithmic
solutions in the various cases are devised and examined numerically. Simulation

Sum rules for charmed baryon masses
The measured masses of the three charge states of the charmed
baryon are found to be in disagreement with a sum rule based on the quark
model, but relying on no detailed assumptions about the form of the
interaction. This poses a significant problem for the charmed baryon sector of
the quark model. Other relations among charmed baryon masses are also

Does HBT Measure the Freeze-out Source Distribution?
It is generally assumed that as a result of multiple scattering, the source
distribution measured in HBT interferometry corresponds to a chaotic source at
freeze-out. This assumption is subject to question as effects of multiple
scattering in HBT measurements must be investigated within a quantum-mechanical
framework. Applying the Glauber multiple scattering theory at high energies and
the optical model at lower energies, we find that multiple scattering leads to
an effective HBT density distribution that depends on the initial chaotic

Azimuthal Asymmetry of Direct Photons in High Energy Nuclear Collisions
We show that a sizeable azimuthal asymmetry, characterized by a coefficient
v_2, is to be expected for direct photons produced in non-central high energy
nuclear collisions. This signal is generated by photons radiated by jets
interacting with the surrounding hot plasma. The anisotropy is out of phase by
an angle with respect to that associated with the elliptic anisotropy
of hadrons, leading to negative values of v_2. Such an asymmetry, if observed,
could be a signature for the presence of a quark gluon plasma and would
establish the importance of jet-plasma interactions as a source of
