The Day-to-Day Associations Between Sleep Characteristics, Affect, and Affect Reactivity
Studies on healthy adults reveal either unclear or inconsistent results regarding the proximal, day-to-day relationship between sleep characteristics (sleep duration, continuity, timing) and different dimensions of mood (positive affect, PA, and negative affect, NA). In addition, while experimental evidence suggests that sleep changes can impact mood by exaggerating peopleās emotional response to environmental factors, few studies have tested whether these findings generalize outside the laboratory. The current study aimed to examine 1) a bidirectional model of sleep and mood, and 2) the effects of sleep characteristics on affect reactivity, a measure of emotional response to daily experiences. Participants were healthy, midlife adults (30-54 yrs old, N =462) drawn from the Adult Health and Behavior Project- Phase 2 study. Across a 4-day monitoring period, sleep characteristics were measured via actigraphy and ecological momentary assessment methods were used to collect repeated measures of participantsā affect, work and social experiences. Affect reactivity was quantified as momentary changes in affect following these experiences. Using hierarchical linear modeling, we tested whether participantsā sleep characteristics on a given night predicted next-day affect and vice versa, and we tested whether sleep characteristics influenced affect reactivity. We found higher levels of PA predicted later sleep timing (B =.23, p =.012), but there were no other significant associations between sleep characteristics, PA and NA (pās >.05). Sleep characteristics did not moderate the effects of daily experiences on either PA or NA (pās >.05). There were significant individual differences in several of the relationships between sleep, affect, and affect reactivity (pās <.05). Overall, our findings suggest that day-to-day fluctuations in behavioral sleep patterns generally do not associate with subsequent affective experience. There may be graded and cumulative effects of sleep disruptions on affect and affect reactivity that are not observed in the context of small, daily fluctuations in sleep characteristics
Multiple fixed-sign solutions for a system of generalized right focal problems with deviating arguments
AbstractWe consider the following system of generalized right focal boundary value problemsuiā“(t)=fi(t,u1(Ļ1(t)),u2(Ļ2(t)),ā¦,un(Ļn(t))),tā[a,b],ui(a)=uiā²(tā)=0,Ī¾ui(b)+Ī“uiā³(b)=0,1ā©½iā©½n, where 12(a+b)<tā<b, Ī¾ā©¾0, Ī“>0 and Ļi, 1ā©½iā©½n are deviating arguments. By using different fixed point theorems, we develop several criteria for the existence of three solutions of the system which are of fixed sign on the interval [a,b], i.e., for each 1ā©½iā©½n, Īøiui(t)ā©¾0 for all tā[a,b] and fixed Īøiā{1,ā1}. Examples are also included to illustrate the results obtained
WorldWide Telescope in Research and Education
The WorldWide Telescope computer program, released to researchers and the
public as a free resource in 2008 by Microsoft Research, has changed the way
the ever-growing Universe of online astronomical data is viewed and understood.
The WWT program can be thought of as a scriptable, interactive, richly visual
browser of the multi-wavelength Sky as we see it from Earth, and of the
Universe as we would travel within it. In its web API format, WWT is being used
as a service to display professional research data. In its desktop format, WWT
works in concert (thanks to SAMP and other IVOA standards) with more
traditional research applications such as ds9, Aladin and TOPCAT. The WWT
Ambassadors Program (founded in 2009) recruits and trains
astrophysically-literate volunteers (including retirees) who use WWT as a
teaching tool in online, classroom, and informal educational settings. Early
quantitative studies of WWTA indicate that student experiences with WWT enhance
science learning dramatically. Thanks to the wealth of data it can access, and
the growing number of services to which it connects, WWT is now a key linking
technology in the Seamless Astronomy environment we seek to offer researchers,
teachers, and students alike.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, describes software available at

Positive Solutions of Two-point right focal boundary value problems on time scales
AbstractWe consider the following boundary value problem,(ā1)nā1yĪn(t)=(ā1)p+1F(t,y(Ļnā1(t))),tā[a,b]ā©T,yĪi(a)=0,0ā¤iā¤pā1,yĪi(Ļ(b))=0,pā¤iā¤nā1,where n ā„ 2, 1 ā©½ p ā©½ n - 1 is fixed and T is a time scale. Criteria for the existence of single, double, and multiple positive solutions of the boundary value problem are developed. Upper and lower bounds for these positive solutions are established for two special cases that arise from some physical phenomena. We also include several examples to illustrate the usefulness of the results obtained
Young Stellar Populations in the Collisional Ring Galaxy NGC 922
We studied the star cluster population properties in the nearby collisional
ring galaxy NGC 922 using HST/WFPC2 photometry and population synthesis
modeling. We found that 69% of the detected clusters are younger than 7 Myr,
and that most of them are located in the ring or along the bar, consistent with
the strong Halpha emission. The images also show a tidal plume pointing toward
the companion. Its stellar age is consistent with pre-existing stars that were
probably stripped off during the passage of the companion. We compared the
star-forming complexes observed in NGC 922 with those of a distant ring galaxy
from the GOODS field. It indicates very similar masses and sizes, suggesting
similar origins. Finally, we found clusters that are excellent progenitor
candidates for faint fuzzy clusters.Comment: To be published in the IAU Symposium 262 proceeding. 2 page

General Lidstone Problems: Multiplicity and Symmetry of Solutions
AbstractFor the 2mth order Lidstone boundary value problem,y(2m)t=fyt,yā³t,ā¦,y(2i)t,ā¦,y(2(mā1))t,tā0,1, y(2i)0=y(2i)1=0,0ā¤iā¤mā1, where (ā1)mf: Rmā[0,$thinsp;ā) is continuous, growth conditions are imposed on f which yield the existence of at least three symmetric positive solutions. This generalizes earlier papers which have applied Avery's generalization of the LeggettāWilliams theorem to Lidstone problems. We then prove the analogous result for difference equations
