    Employment Law Update

    Get PDF
It is important for managers to keep abreast of developments in employment law. Every year the law is refined as courts are presented and resolve new questions. Many of these are questions of statutory interpretation. Some are issues of common law. This article reviews recent court cases involving the interpretation of important statutes, such as the Civil Rights Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Age Discrimination Act. It also reviews developments in the common law area of privacy issues (Landesman, 2004)

Performance optimization of a leagility inspired supply chain model: a CFGTSA algorithm based approach

    Get PDF
Lean and agile principles have attracted considerable interest in the past few decades. Industrial sectors throughout the world are upgrading to these principles to enhance their performance, since they have been proven to be efficient in handling supply chains. However, the present market trend demands a more robust strategy incorporating the salient features of both lean and agile principles. Inspired by these, the leagility principle has emerged, encapsulating both lean and agile features. The present work proposes a leagile supply chain based model for manufacturing industries. The paper emphasizes the various aspects of leagile supply chain modeling and implementation and proposes a new Hybrid Chaos-based Fast Genetic Tabu Simulated Annealing (CFGTSA) algorithm to solve the complex scheduling problem prevailing in the leagile environment. The proposed CFGTSA algorithm is compared with the GA, SA, TS and Hybrid Tabu SA algorithms to demonstrate its efficacy in handling complex scheduling problems

    Electrical Thermometers for Aircraft

    Get PDF
Electrical thermometers commonly used on aircraft are the thermoelectric type for measuring engine-cylinder temperatures, the resistance type for measuring air temperatures, and the superheat meters of thermoelectric and resistance types for use on airships. These instruments are described and their advantages and disadvantages enumerated. Methods of testing these instruments and the performance to be expected from each are discussed. The field testing of engine-cylinder thermometers is treated in detail

    Carbon-monoxide Indicators for Aircraft

    Get PDF
Several improvements that have been made on commercially available carbon-monoxide indicators to make them more suitable for aircraft use are described. These improvements include an automatic flow regulator, which permits the use of a simplified instrument on aircraft where a source of suction is available, and a more reliable alarm attachment. A field method for testing instruments on standard samples of carbon monoxide is described. Performance data and instructions in operation and maintenance are given

A Study of The Local Toxicity of Agents Used for Variceal Injection Sclerotherapy

Injection sclerotherapy is widely used in the treatment of oesophageal varices. However, few studies have compared the local toxicity of sclerosant agents which may be important if serious local complications are to be avoided

Unicorns and agency theory: Agreeable moral hazard?

    Get PDF
The number of unicorns, startups valued over $1 billion, has steadily risen over the past decade. The abnormally high valuation of a unicorn from investors is based on their potential to disrupt a market and create a new paradigm. With this as the backdrop, this piece asks the question, what theoretical tools do we have to understand unicorns? Specifically, we explore agency theory. We argue that if principals and agents agree on the goal of disruption, then perhaps the agency problem that does occur in unicorns is beneficial, not a cost. Further, we argue that the principals of unicorns do want agents to take higher than normal risks with their investment to disrupt a given market. From this phenomenon, we introduce the concept of agreeable moral hazard and its use in the unicorn setting. Not only does the concept of agreeable moral hazard provide theoretical implications for future research, but it also highlights the need for more research to test existing theory on the unicorn population

Does Cardiac Morphology Predict Plasma Brain Natriuretic Peptide Levels in Adolescent Athletes?

Objective: The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship of plasma levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) to physiological parameters and cardiac morphological characteristics in a population of young athletes. Our hypothesis is that physiological and cardiac morphological characteristics do not predict BNP levels in adolescent athletes. Design: Observational study Setting: Outpatient hospital Patients: 30 healthy male adolescent high school football players (16.0 +/- 1.1 yrs) Interventions: Physical exam, electrocardiography, plasma BNP measurement by rapid fluorescent immunoassay, and limited echocardiography Main Outcome Measure Null hypothesis: physiologic parameters and cardiac morphology do not predict plasma BNP levels in healthy adolescent football players. Significance level set at p \u3c 0.05. Results: Plasma BNP for this population was 11.9 +/- 10.2 pg‱mlˉÂč. There was no correlation between BNP and mean arterial pressure (r = -0.09, p = 0.64), BMI (r = 0.11, p = 0.57), interventricular septal thickness (r = -0.15, p = 0.44), left ventricular wall thickness (r = 0.00, p = 0.99), relative wall thickness (r = -0.04, p = 0.84), left ventricular mass (r = 0.05, p = 0.79), or left ventricular mass index (r = 0.11, p = 0.55). Conclusion: Plasma BNP levels in healthy adolescent athletes have no correlation to BMI or LV mass, even when corrected for body surface area
