Forming the Dusty Ring in HR 4796A
We describe planetesimal accretion calculations for the dusty ring observed
in the nearby A0 star HR 4796A. Models with initial masses of 10-20 times the
minimum mass solar nebula produce a ring of width 7-15 AU and height 0.3-0.6 AU
at 70 AU in roughly 10 Myr. The ring has a radial optical depth of 1. These
results agree with limits derived from infrared images and from the excess
infrared luminosity.Comment: 6 pages, including 2 figures and 1 table; ApJ Letters, in pres
The impact of climate on radial growth and nut production of Persian walnut ( Juglans regia L.) in Southern Kyrgyzstan
This dendroecological study used time series of climate and radial growth and nut production of Juglans regia to investigate the relationships between these parameters. More than 200 trees growing at sites of different altitude, aspect, inclination and human impact intensity were sampled in walnut-fruit forests of the Jalal Abad region in Southern Kyrgyzstan. Tree rings were dated and ring widths measured. Wide and narrow tree rings, so called positive and negative pointer years, could be explained by climatic events. The mean annual increment differed significantly in different regions and altitudes. The highest values could be found in plantations and at higher altitudes (1,700-2,000m a.s.l.). Analysing the relationships between nut crop yields and annual increment, we found a significantly positive correlation between nut crop of the current year (x) and ring width of the previous year (xâ1). This relationship is influenced by climatic conditions, and may change in the future if climatic conditions in the region will change. Our study shows that Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) of South Kyrgyzstan can be used in dendrochronological studies, and illustrates the influence of site conditions and management practices on radial growth of this tree specie

Fertility preservation in >1,000 patients: patient's characteristics, spectrum, efficacy and risks of applied preservation techniques
Introduction: Data on the characteristics of female patients counselled for fertility preservation and the efficacy and risk of the applied procedures are still poor. We therefore analysed the registry of a network of 70 infertility centers which are involved in fertility preservation in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, called FertiPROTEKT (hhtp://www.fertiprotekt.eu). Materials and methods: 1,280 counselled patients (15-40years) were analysed regarding characteristics and different fertility preservation treatments before cytotoxic therapy in 2007-2009. Results: 34.8% of the counselled patients were diagnosed with breast cancer, 30.5% with Hodgkin's lymphoma, 25.4% with other malignancies and 9.3% with non-malignant diseases. 89.6% of the treated breast cancer patients were 25-40years of age, and 87.5% of the lymphoma patients were 15-30years of age. At the time of counselling, 85.3% of the breast cancer patients and 92.7% of the lymphoma patients were childless. 1,080 patients received a single or combined therapy such as GnRH agonists (n=823), cryopreservation of ovarian tissue (n=500), ovarian stimulation (n=221) and transposition of the ovaries (n=24). Only one severe complication, requiring postponement of the chemotherapy, was documented. In stimulated patients, 2,417 oocytes (mean n=11.6, SD±7.7) were received. Fertilisation rate per received oocyte was 61.3%. Conclusions: Fertility preservation programmes mainly involve women without children, diagnosed with breast cancer or Hodgkin's lymphoma. Fertility preservation techniques can be applied with low risk. The limited and age-dependant success rate of the different therapies require individualised approaches of single or combined fertility preservation technique

Why does early childhood deprivation increase the risk for depression and anxiety in adulthood? A developmental cascade model
Abstract Background: Using data from the English & Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study we recently reported that early time-lmited exposure to severe institutional deprivation is
associated with early onset and persistent neurodevelopmental problems and later
onset emotional problems. Here we examine possible reasons for the late
emergence of emotional problems in this cohort. Our main focus is on testing a
developmental cascade mediated via the functional impact of early-appearing
neurodevelopmental problems on late adolescent functioning. We also explore a
second putative pathway via sensitization to stress. Methods: The ERA study includes 165 Romanian individuals who spent their early lives in grossly depriving institutions and were subsequently adopted into UK
families, along with 52 UK adoptees with no history of deprivation. Age six years
symptoms of neurodevelopmental problems and age 15 anxiety/depression
symptoms were assessed via parental reports. Young adult symptoms of depression
and anxiety were assessed by both parent and self-reports; young adults also
completed measures of stress reactivity , exposure to adverse life events and
functioning in work and interpersonal relationships. Results: The path between early institutional deprivation and adult emotional problems was mediated via the impact of early neurodevelopmental problems on
unemployment and poor friendship functioning during the transition to adulthood.
The findings with regard to early deprivation, later life stress reactivity and emotional
problems were inconclusive.
Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that the risk for adult depression and anxiety following extreme institutional deprivation is explained through the effects of early neurodevelopmental problems on later social and vocational functioning. Future research should more fully examine the role of stress susceptibility in this model
Virological Surveillance and Molecular Characterization of Human Parainfluenzavirus Infection in Children with Acute Respiratory Illness: Germany, 2015â2019
Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) are important causes of respiratory illness, especially in young children. However, surveillance for HPIV is rarely performed continuously, and national-level epidemiologic and genetic data are scarce. Within the German sentinel system, to monitor acute respiratory infections (ARI), 4463 respiratory specimens collected from outpatients < 5 years of age between October 2015 and September 2019 were retrospectively screened for HPIV 1â4 using real-time PCR. HPIV was identified in 459 (10%) samples. HPIV-3 was the most common HPIV-type, with 234 detections, followed by HPIV-1 (113), HPIV-4 (61), and HPIV-2 (49). HPIV-3 was more frequently associated with age < 2 years, and HPIV-4 was more frequently associated with pneumonia compared to other HPIV types. HPIV circulation displayed distinct seasonal patterns, which appeared to vary by type. Phylogenetic characterization clustered HPIV-1 in Clades 2 and 3. Reclassification was performed for HPIV-2, provisionally assigning two distinct HPIV-2 groups and six clades, with German HPIV-2s clustering in Clade 2.4. HPIV-3 clustered in C1, C3, C5, and, interestingly, in A. HPIV-4 clustered in Clades 2.1 and 2.2. The results of this study may serve to inform future approaches to diagnose and prevent HPIV infections, which contribute substantially to ARI in young children in Germany.Peer Reviewe
Measures of Obesity Associated with Asthma Diagnosis in Ethnic Minority Children
Objective. The study objective was to examine relationships between different body size measurements and asthma in ethnic minority children. Methods. We used data from a community-based study of 505 children aged 6-to-8 years old to study the association of percent body fat, fat distribution, and BMI percentile with asthma diagnosis. Poisson regression models were used to compute prevalence ratios (PRs) for sex-specific quintiles of the body fat measures on the main outcome of asthma. Results. When comparing the highest quintile of each body fat measure to the combined lowest two quintiles, higher body mass index percentile, percent body fat, and waist circumference all were associated with a higher likelihood of physician-diagnosed asthma (PR = 1.63 (95% CI 1.12â2.39), 1.50 (95% CI 1.02â2.21), and 1.56 (95% CI 1.04â2.34), resp.). Conclusions. This study found a significant association between increased body size and asthma diagnosis, regardless of the measurement examined
