A Swendsen-Wang update algorithm for the Symanzik improved sigma model

We study a generalization of Swendsen-Wang algorithm suited for Potts models with next-next-neighborhood interactions. Using the embedding technique proposed by Wolff we test it on the Symanzik improved bidimensional non-linear $\sigma$ model. For some long range observables we find a little slowing down exponent ($z \simeq 0.3$) that we interpret as an effect of the partial frustration of the induced spin model.Comment: Self extracting archive fil

The two-phase issue in the O(n) non-linear σ\sigma-model: A Monte Carlo study

We have performed a high statistics Monte Carlo simulation to investigate whether the two-dimensional O(n) non-linear sigma models are asymptotically free or they show a Kosterlitz- Thouless-like phase transition. We have calculated the mass gap and the magnetic susceptibility in the O(8) model with standard action and the O(3) model with Symanzik action. THE EFFECT OF INSPIRED OXYGEN CONCENTRATION ON INTRAPULMONARY RIGHT-TO-LEFT SHUNT DURING POSTOPERATIVE MECHANICAL VENTILATION

A consecutive series of patients undergoing cardiac surgery for valve replacement was divided into two groups. The first underwent postoperative artificial ventilation using the oxygen-driven Bird ventilator. The inspiratory oxygen concentration was 83%. In the second group a Bird ventilator was also used but with an oxygen concentration of 40%. In the first group the intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt rose to an average of 17% during the first two postoperative daysand in the second group to an average of 9%. Testing fixed points in the 2D O(3) non-linear sigma model

Using high statistic numerical results we investigate the properties of the O(3) non-linear 2D sigma-model. Our main concern is the detection of an hypothetical Kosterlitz-Thouless-like (KT) phase transition which would contradict the asymptotic freedom scenario.
