    Time transfer and frequency shift to the order 1/c^4 in the field of an axisymmetric rotating body

    Within the weak-field, post-Newtonian approximation of the metric theories of gravity, we determine the one-way time transfer up to the order 1/c^4, the unperturbed term being of order 1/c, and the frequency shift up to the order 1/c^4. We adapt the method of the world-function developed by Synge to the Nordtvedt-Will PPN formalism. We get an integral expression for the world-function up to the order 1/c^3 and we apply this result to the field of an isolated, axisymmetric rotating body. We give a new procedure enabling to calculate the influence of the mass and spin multipole moments of the body on the time transfer and the frequency shift up to the order 1/c^4. We obtain explicit formulas for the contributions of the mass, of the quadrupole moment and of the intrinsic angular momentum. In the case where the only PPN parameters different from zero are beta and gamma, we deduce from these results the complete expression of the frequency shift up to the order 1/c^4. We briefly discuss the influence of the quadrupole moment and of the rotation of the Earth on the frequency shifts in the ACES mission.Comment: 17 pages, no figure. Version 2.     Field quantization for open optical cavities

    We study the quantum properties of the electromagnetic field in optical cavities coupled to an arbitrary number of escape channels. We consider both inhomogeneous dielectric resonators with a scalar dielectric constant ϵ(r)\epsilon({\bf r}) and cavities defined by mirrors of arbitrary shape. Using the Feshbach projector technique we quantize the field in terms of a set of resonator and bath modes. We rigorously show that the field Hamiltonian reduces to the system--and--bath Hamiltonian of quantum optics. The field dynamics is investigated using the input--output theory of Gardiner and Collet. In the case of strong coupling to the external radiation field we find spectrally overlapping resonator modes. The mode dynamics is coupled due to the damping and noise inflicted by the external field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasing.Comment: 16 pages, added references, corrected typo

    Bell's inequalities for states with positive partial transpose

    We study violations of n particle Bell inequalities (as developed by Mermin and Klyshko) under the assumption that suitable partial transposes of the density operator are positive. If all transposes with respect to a partition of the system into p subsystems are positive, the best upper bound on the violation is 2^((n-p)/2). In particular, if the partial transposes with respect to all subsystems are positive, the inequalities are satisfied. This is supporting evidence for a recent conjecture by Peres that positivity of partial transposes could be equivalent to existence of local classical models.Comment: 4 pages, REVTe

    Spontaneous Magnetization and Electron Momentum Density in 3D Quantum Dots

    We discuss an exactly solvable model Hamiltonian for describing the interacting electron gas in a quantum dot. Results for a spherical square well confining potential are presented. The ground state is found to exhibit striking oscillations in spin polarization with dot radius at a fixed electron density. These oscillations are shown to induce characteristic signatures in the momentum density of the electron gas, providing a novel route for direct experimental observation of the dot magnetization via spectroscopies sensitive to the electron momentum density.Comment: 5 pages (Revtex4), 4 (eps) figure

    We investigate the effect of axions on the polarization of electromagnetic waves as they propagate through astronomical distances. We analyze the change in the dispersion of the electromagnetic wave due to its mixing with axions. We find that this leads to a shift in polarization and turns out to be the dominant effect for a wide range of frequencies. We analyze whether this effect or the decay of photons into axions can explain the large scale anisotropies which have been observed in the polarizations of quasars and radio galaxies. We also comment on the possibility that the axion-photon mixing can explain the dimming of distant supernovae.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur

    Morphologies of AGN host galaxies using HST/ACS in the CDFS-GOODS field

    Using HST/ACS images in four bands F435W, F606W, F775W and F850LP, we identify optical counterparts to the X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field South in the GOODS South field. A detailed study has been made of these sources to study their morphological types. We use methods like decomposition of galaxy luminosity profiles, color maps and visual inspection of 192 galaxies which are identified as possible optical counterparts of Chandra X-ray sources in the CDFS-GOODS field. We find that most moderate luminosity AGN hosts are bulge dominated in the redshift range (z \approx 0.4-1.3), but not merging/interacting galaxies. This implies probable fueling of the moderate luminosity AGN by mechanisms other than those merger driven.Comment: pdflatex, accepted in ApSS. revisions in tex

    Kinetics and Jamming Coverage in a Random Sequential Adsorption of Polymer Chains

    Using a highly efficient Monte Carlo algorithm, we are able to study the growth of coverage in a random sequential adsorption (RSA) of self-avoiding walk (SAW) chains for up to 10^{12} time steps on a square lattice. For the first time, the true jamming coverage (theta_J) is found to decay with the chain length (N) with a power-law theta_J propto N^{-0.1}. The growth of the coverage to its jamming limit can be described by a power-law, theta(t) approx theta_J -c/t^y with an effective exponent y which depends on the chain length, i.e., y = 0.50 for N=4 to y = 0.07 for N=30 with y -> 0 in the asymptotic limit N -> infinity.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages inclduing figure

    Optical cavity tests of Lorentz invariance for the electron

    A hypothetical violation of Lorentz invariance in the electrons' equation of motion (expressed within the Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model) leads to a change of the geometry of crystals and thus shifts the resonance frequency of an electromagnetic cavity. This allows experimental tests of Lorentz invariance of the electron sector of the standard model. The material dependence of the effect allows to separate it from an additional shift caused by Lorentz violation in electrodynamics, and to place independent limits on both effects. From present experiments, upper limits on Lorentz violation in the electrons' kinetic energy term are deduced.Comment: 17 pages revte
