For two graphs and the strong Ramsey game on the
board and with target is played as follows. Two players alternately

asks whether the first player has a winning strategy in
in bounded time as . Surprisingly, in a recent paper Hefetz
et al. constructed a -uniform hypergraph for which they proved
that the first player does not have a winning strategy in
in bounded time. They naturally ask
whether the same result holds for graphs. In this paper we make further
progress in decreasing the rank.
In our first result, we construct a graph (in fact )
and prove that the first player does not have a winning strategy in
in bounded time. As an application of this
result we deduce our second result in which we construct a -uniform
hypergraph and prove that the first player does not have a winning
strategy in in bounded time. This improves the
result in the paper above.
An equivalent formulation of our first result is that the game
is a draw. Another reason for interest
on the board is a folklore result that the disjoint
union of two finite positional games both of which are first player wins is
also a first player win. An amusing corollary of our first result is that at
least one of the following two natural statements is false: (1) for every graph

A Framework for the Generation and Dissemination of Drop Size Distribution (DSD) Characteristics Using Multiple Platforms
Proper characterization of the precipitation drop size distribution (DSD) is integral to providing realistic and accurate space- and ground-based precipitation retrievals. Current technology allows for the development of DSD products from a variety of platforms, including disdrometers, vertical profilers and dual-polarization radars. Up to now, however, the dissemination or availability of such products has been limited to individual sites and/or field campaigns, in a variety of formats, often using inconsistent algorithms for computing the integral DSD parameters, such as the median- and mass-weighted drop diameter, total number concentration, liquid water content, rain rate, etc. We propose to develop a framework for the generation and dissemination of DSD characteristic products using a unified structure, capable of handling the myriad collection of disdrometers, profilers, and dual-polarization radar data currently available and to be collected during several upcoming GPM Ground Validation field campaigns. This DSD super-structure paradigm is an adaptation of the radar super-structure developed for NASA s Radar Software Library (RSL) and RSL_in_IDL. The goal is to provide the DSD products in a well-documented format, most likely NetCDF, along with tools to ingest and analyze the products. In so doing, we can develop a robust archive of DSD products from multiple sites and platforms, which should greatly benefit the development and validation of precipitation retrieval algorithms for GPM and other precipitation missions. An outline of this proposed framework will be provided as well as a discussion of the algorithms used to calculate the DSD parameters
Treatment recommendations for psoriatic arthritis
Objective: To develop comprehensive recommendations for the treatment of the various clinical manifestations of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) based on evidence obtained from a systematic review of the literature and from consensus opinion. Methods: Formal literature reviews of treatment for the most significant discrete clinical manifestations of PsA (skin and nails, peripheral arthritis, axial disease, dactylitis and enthesitis) were performed and published by members of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA). Treatment recommendations were drafted for each of the clinical manifestations by rheumatologists, dermatologists and PsA patients based on the literature reviews and consensus opinion. The level of agreement for the individual treatment recommendations among GRAPPA members was assessed with an online questionnaire. Results: Treatment recommendations were developed for peripheral arthritis, axial disease, psoriasis, nail disease, dactylitis and enthesitis in the setting of PsA. In rotal, 19 recommendations were drafted, and over 80% agreement was obtained on 16 of them. In addition, a grid that factors disease severity into each of the different disease manifestations was developed to help the clinician with treatment decisions for the individual patient from an evidenced-based perspective. Conclusions: Treatment recommendations for the cardinal physical manifestations of PsA were developed based on a literature review and consensus between rheumatologists and dermatologists. In addition, a grid was established to assist in therapeutic reasoning and decision making for individual patients. It is anticipated that periodic updates will take place using this framework as new data become available
The neurotrophin receptor, gp75, forms a complex with the receptor tyrosine kinase TrkA
The high-affinity NGF receptor is thought to be a complex of two receptors , gp75 and the tyrosine kinase TrkA, but direct biochemical evidence for such an association had been lacking. In this report, we demonstrate the existence of such a gp75-TrkA complex by a copatching technique. Gp75 on the surface of intact cells is patched with an anti-gp75 antibody and fluorescent secondary antibody, the cells are then fixed to prevent further antibody-induced redistributions, and the distribution of TrkA is probed with and anti-TrkA antibody and fluorescent secondary antibody. We utilize a baculovirus-insect cell expression of wild-type and mutated NGF receptors. TrkA and gp75 copatch in both the absence and presence of NGF. The association is specific, since gp75 does not copatch with other tyrosine kinase receptors, including TrkB, platelet-derived growth factor receptor-beta, and Torso (Tor). To determine which domains of TrkA are required for copatching, we used a series of TrkA-Tor chimeric receptors and show that the extracellular domain of TrkA is sufficient for copatching with gp75. A chimeric receptor with TrkA transmembrane and intracellular domains show partial copatching with gp75. Deletion of the intracellular domain of gp75 decreases but does not eliminate copatching. A point mutation which inactivates the TrkA kinase has no effect on copatching, indicating that this enzymatic activity is not required for association with gp75. Hence, although interactions between the gp75 and TrkA extracellular domains are sufficient for complex formation, interactions involving other receptor domains also play a role

Raised late pregnancy glucose concentrations in mice carrying pups with targeted disruption of H19delta13.
OBJECTIVE: We have hypothesized that variation in imprinted growth-promoting fetal genes may affect maternal glucose concentrations in pregnancy. To test this hypothesis we evaluated the effects of fetal disruption of murine H19(Delta13) on maternal glucose concentrations in pregnancy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Experimental mice were pregnant females that had inherited the disrupted H19(Delta13) from their fathers and were therefore phenotypically wild type due to imprinting; approximately half of their litters were null for H19(Delta13) through maternal inheritance of the disrupted gene. In control mice approximately half the litter paternally inherited the disrupted H19(Delta13), so the pups were either genetically wild type or phenotypically wild type due to imprinting. Blood glucose concentrations were assessed by intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests on days 1, 16, and 18 of pregnancy. RESULTS: There were no differences in the glucose concentrations of control and experimental pregnant mice at day 1. However, at day 16 mothers carrying H19(Delta13)-null pups had a significantly higher area under the glucose tolerance test curves than controls (1,845 +/- 378 vs. 1,386 +/- 107 mmol * min * l(-1) [P = 0.01]) in association with increasing pregnancy-related insulin resistance. Although this difference lessened toward term, overall, mothers of maternally inherited H19(Delta13) mutants had significantly higher glucose concentrations during the last trimester (1,602 +/- 321 [n = 17] vs. 1,359 +/- 147 [n = 18] mmol * min * l(-1) [P = 0.009]). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that maternal glucose concentrations in pregnant mice can be affected by targeted disruption of fetal H19(Delta13). This implies that variable fetal IGF2 expression could affect risk for gestational diabetes
The NIR Upgrade to the SALT Robert Stobie Spectrograph
The near infrared (NIR) upgrade to the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) on
the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), RSS/NIR, extends the spectral
coverage of all modes of the visible arm. The RSS/NIR is a low to medium
resolution spectrograph with broadband imaging, spectropolarimetric, and
Fabry-Perot imaging capabilities. The visible and NIR arms can be used
simultaneously to extend spectral coverage from approximately 3200 A to 1.6 um.
Both arms utilize high efficiency volume phase holographic gratings via
articulating gratings and cameras. The NIR camera is designed around a
2048x2048 HAWAII-2RG detector housed in a cryogenic dewar. The Epps optical
design of the camera consists of 6 spherical elements, providing sub-pixel rms
image sizes of 7.5 +/- 1.0 um over all wavelengths and field angles. The exact
long wavelength cutoff is yet to be determined in a detailed thermal analysis
and will depend on the semi-warm instrument cooling scheme. Initial estimates
place instrument limiting magnitudes at J = 23.4 and H(1.4-1.6 um) = 21.6 for

The Third wave in globalization theory
This essay examines a proposition made in the literature that there are three waves in globalization theory—the globalist, skeptical, and postskeptical or transformational waves—and argues that this division requires a new look. The essay is a critique of the third of these waves and its relationship with the second wave. Contributors to the third wave not only defend the idea of globalization from criticism by the skeptics but also try to construct a more complex and qualified theory of globalization than provided by first-wave accounts. The argument made here is that third-wave authors come to conclusions that try to defend globalization yet include qualifications that in practice reaffirm skeptical claims. This feature of the literature has been overlooked in debates and the aim of this essay is to revisit the literature and identify as well as discuss this problem. Such a presentation has political implications. Third wavers propose globalist cosmopolitan democracy when the substance of their arguments does more in practice to bolster the skeptical view of politics based on inequality and conflict, nation-states and regional blocs, and alliances of common interest or ideology rather than cosmopolitan global structures
