Increasing the Strain Resistance of Si/SiO Interfaces for Flexible Electronics
Understanding the changes that occur in the micro-mechanical properties of semiconductor materials is of utmost importance for the design of new flexible electronic devices, especially to control the properties of newly designed materials. In this work, we present the design, fabrication, and application of a novel tensile-testing device coupled to FTIR measurements that enables in situ atomic investigations of samples under uniaxial tensile load. The device allows for mechanical studies of rectangular samples with dimensions of 30 mm Ă 10 mm Ă 0.5 mm. By recording the alternation in dipole moments, the investigation of fracture mechanisms becomes feasible. Our results show that thermally treated SiO on silicon wafers has a higher strain resistance and breaking force than the SiO native oxide. The FTIR spectra of the samples during the unloading step indicate that for the native oxide sample, the fracture happened following the propagation of cracks from the surface into the silicon wafer. On the contrary, for the thermally treated samples, the crack growth starts from the deepest region of the oxide and propagates along the interface due to the change in the interface properties and redistribution of the applied stress. Finally, density functional theory calculations of model surfaces were conducted in order to unravel the differences in optic and electronic properties of the interfaces with and without applied stress

Fully Automated Optimization of RobotâBased MOF Thin Film Growth via Machine Learning Approaches
Metalâorganic frameworks (MOFs), have emerged as ideal class of materials for the identification of structureâproperty relationships and for the targeted design of multifunctional materials for diverse applications. While the powder form is most common, for the integration of MOFs into devices, typically thin films of surface anchored MOFs (SURMOFs), are required. Although the quality of SURMOFs emerging from layer-by-layer approaches is impressive, previous works revealed that the optimum growth conditions are very different between different types of MOFs and different substrates. Furthermore, the choice of appropriate synthesis conditions (e.g., solvents, modulators, concentrations, immersion times) is crucial for the growth process and needs to be adjusted for different substrates. Machine learning (ML) approaches show great promise for multi-parameter optimization problems such as the above discussed growth conditions for SURMOF on a particular substrate. Here, this work presents an ML-based approach allowing to quickly identify optimized growth conditions for HKUST-I SURMOFs with high crystallinity and uniform orientation. This process can subsequently be used to optimize growth on other types of substrates. In addition, an analysis of the results allows to gain further insights into the factors governing the growth of MOF thin films
Elimination of Domain Boundaries Accelerates Diffusion in MOFs by an Order of Magnitude: Monolithic MetalâOrganic Framework Thin Films Epitaxially Grown on Si(111) Substrates
Many properties of the emerging class of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) depend crucially on defect concentrations, as in case of other solids. In order to provide reference systems with nearly perfect structure and low defect density, a procedure to grow MOFs epitaxially on cm-sized Si(111) single crystals is developed. The crystalline metal-organic thin films are in high registry with the substrate\u27s crystal lattice, as demonstrated by synchrotron-based grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD) experiments. The corresponding reduction of MOF defect density is shown to have striking effects on the properties of these porous frameworks. The most pronounced difference concerns mass transport. An increase in the diffusion coefficient of guest molecules by one order of magnitude relative to the same MOF materials with normal defect densities is observed
Integrated system for temperature-controlled fast protein liquid chromatography comprising improved copolymer modified beaded agarose adsorbents and a travelling cooling zone reactor arrangement
An integrated approach to temperature-controlled chromatography, involving copolymer
modified agarose adsorbents and a novel travelling cooling zone reactor (TCZR)
arrangement, is described. Sepharose CL6B was transformed into a thermoresponsive cation
exchange adsorbent (thermoCEX) in four synthetic steps: (i) epichlorohydrin activation; (ii)
amine capping; (iii) 4,4âČ-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) immobilization; and âgraft fromâ
polymerization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-tert-butylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-
N,NâČ-methylenebisacrylamide). FT-IR, 1H NMR, gravimetry and chemical assays allowed
precise determination of the adsorbentâs copolymer composition and loading, and identified
the initial epoxy activation step as a critical determinant of âon-supportâ copolymer loading,
and in turn, protein binding performance. In batch binding studies with lactoferrin,
thermoCEXâs binding affinity and maximum adsorption capacity rose smoothly with
temperature increase from 20 to 50 ÂșC. In temperature shifting chromatography experiments
employing thermoCEX in thermally-jacketed columns, 44 â 51% of the lactoferrin adsorbed
at 42 ÂșC could be desorbed under binding conditions by cooling the column to 22 ÂșC, but the
elution peaks exhibited strong tailing. To more fully exploit the potential of thermoresponsive
chromatography adsorbents, a new column arrangement, the TCZR, was developed. In TCZR
chromatography, a narrow discrete cooling zone (special assembly of copper blocks and
Peltier elements) is moved along a bespoke fixed-bed separation columnfilled with stationary
phase. In tests with thermoCEX, it was possible to recover 65% of the lactoferrin bound at 35
ÂșC using 8 successive movements of the cooling zone at a velocity of 0.1 mm/s; over half of
the recovered protein was eluted in the first peak in more concentrated form than in the feed.
Intra-particle diffusion of desorbed protein out of the support pores, and the ratio between the
velocities of the cooling zone and mobile phase were identified as the main parameters
affecting TCZR performance. In contrast to conventional systems, which rely on cooling the
3
whole column to effect elution and permit only batch-wise operation, TCZR chromatography
generates sharp concentrated elution peaks without tailing effects and appears ideally suited
for continuous operation
Pleuropulmonary pathologies in the early phase of acute pancreatitis correlate with disease severity
Background Respiratory failure worsens the outcome of acute pancreatitis (AP) and underlying factors might be early detectable. Aims To evaluate the prevalence and prognostic relevance of early pleuropulmonary pathologies and pre-existing chronic lung diseases (CLD) in AP patients. Methods Multicentre retrospective cohort study. Caudal sections of the thorax derived from abdominal contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) performed in the early phase of AP were assessed. Independent predictors of severe AP were identified by binary logistic regression analysis. A one-year survival analysis using Kaplan-Meier curves and log rank test was performed. Result 358 patients were analysed, finding pleuropulmonary pathologies in 81%. CECTs were performed with a median of 2 days (IQR 1-3) after admission. Multivariable analysis identified moderate to severe or bilateral pleural effusions (PEs) (OR = 4.16, 95%CI 2.05-8.45, p Conclusions Increasing awareness of the prognostic impact of large and bilateral PEs and pre-existing CLD could facilitate the identification of patients at high risk for severe AP in the early phase and thus improve their prognosis.Peer reviewe
Differentiation between rebound thymic hyperplasia and thymic relapse after chemotherapy in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma
Rebound thymic hyperplasia (RTH) is a common phenomenon caused by stress factors such as chemotherapy (CTX) or radiotherapy, with an incidence between 44% and 67.7% in pediatric lymphoma. Misinterpretation of RTH and thymic lymphoma relapse (LR) may lead to unnecessary diagnostic procedures including invasive biopsies or treatment intensification. The aim of this study was to identify parameters that differentiate between RTH and thymic LR in the anterior mediastinum.
After completion of CTX, we analyzed computed tomographies (CTs) and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of 291 patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) and adequate imaging available from the European Network for Pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma C1 trial. In all patients with biopsy-proven LR, an additional fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)-CT was assessed. Structure and morphologic configuration in addition to calcifications and presence of multiple masses in the thymic region and signs of extrathymic LR were evaluated.
After CTX, a significant volume increase of new or growing masses in the thymic space occurred in 133 of 291 patients. Without biopsy, only 98 patients could be identified as RTH or LR. No single finding related to thymic regrowth allowed differentiation between RTH and LR. However, the vast majority of cases with thymic LR presented with additional increasing tumor masses (33/34). All RTH patients (64/64) presented with isolated thymic growth.
Isolated thymic LR is very uncommon. CHL relapse should be suspected when increasing tumor masses are present in distant sites outside of the thymic area. Conversely, if regrowth of lymphoma in other sites can be excluded, isolated thymic mass after CTX likely represents RTH
Mean muscle attenuation correlates with severe acute pancreatitis unlike visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue
Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a frequent disorder with considerable morbidity and mortality. Obesity has previously been reported to influence disease severity. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the association of adipose and muscle parameters with the severity grade of AP. Methods: In total 454 patients were recruited. The first contrast-enhanced computed tomography of each patient was reviewed for adipose and muscle tissue parameters at L3 level. Associations with disease severity were analysed through logistic regression analysis. The predictive capacity of the parameters was investigated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: No distinct variation was found between the AP severity groups in either adipose tissue parameters (visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue) or visceral muscle ratio. However, muscle mass and mean muscle attenuation differed significantly with p-values of 0.037 and 0.003 respectively. In multivariate analysis, low muscle attenuation was associated with severe AP with an odds ratio of 4.09 (95% confidence intervals: 1.61-10.36, p-value 0.003). No body parameter presented sufficient predictive capability in ROC-curve analysis. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that a low muscle attenuation level is associated with an increased risk of severe AP. Future prospective studies will help identify the underlying mechanisms and characterise the influence of body composition parameters on AP.Peer reviewe
