    Smart logistics

This lecture focuses on Smart Logistics referring to these intelligent managerial decisions related to the design, operations and control of the transportation chain processes in an efficient and cost-effective way. The starting point for Smart Logistics is the key observation that the real-life world is stochastic and changing over time. Any logistics decision ignoring these aspects is bound to be sub-optimal once realized. Due to these real-life complexities, coping with time-dependent and stochastic environments is a difficult problem in Freight Transport & Logistics. Rather than focusing on idealized logistics problems in the transportation chain, I will focus on different real-life variants of these challenging problems. In this lecture, I will outline and discuss three main research themes on which I will focus in my chair on Freight Transport & Logistics

Competitive solutions for cooperating logistics providers

    Get PDF
This paper discusses solutions for gain sharing in consortia of logistic providers where joint planning of truckload deliveries enables the reduction of empty kilometres. The highly competitive nature of freight transport markets necessitates solutions that distinguish among the logistics providers based on their characteristics, even in situations with two players only. We introduce desirable properties in these situations and propose a solution that satisfies such properties. By comparing the existing solutions against the introduced properties we demonstrate the advantages of our proposed solution

Integrating passenger and freight transportation : model formulation and insights

    Get PDF
Integrating passenger and freight flows creates attractive business opportunities because the same transportation needs can be met with fewer vehicles and emissions. This paper seeks an integrated solution for the transportation of passenger and freight simultaneously, so that fewer vehicles are required. The newly introduced problem concerns scheduling a set of vehicles to serve the requests such that a part of the journey can be carried out on a scheduled passenger transportation service. We propose an arc-based mixed integer programming formulation for the integrated transportation system. Computational results on a set of instances provide a clear understanding on the benefits of integrating passenger and freight transportation in the current networks, considering multi-modality of traditional passenger-oriented transportation modes, such as taxi, bus, train or tram

A multimodal network flow problem with product quality preservation, transshipment, and asset management

In this paper, we present an optimization model for a transportation planning problem with multiple transportation modes, highly perishable products, demand and supply dynamics, and management of the reusable transport units (RTIs). Such a problem arises in the European horticultural chain, for example. As a result of geographic dispersion of production and market, a reliable transportation solutions ensures long-term success in the European market. The model is an extension to the network ow problem. We integrate dynamic allocation, ow, and repositioning of the RTIs in order to nd the trade-o between quality requirements and operational considerations and costs. We also present detailed computational results and analysis

An auction for collaborative vehicle routing: Models and algorithms

    Get PDF
Increasing competition and expectations from customers pressures carriers to further improve efficiency. Forming collaborations is essential for carriers to reach their targeted efficiency levels. In this study, we investigate an auction mechanism to facilitate collaboration amongst carriers while maintaining autonomy for the individual carriers. Multiple auction implementations are evaluated. As the underlying decision problem (which is a traditional vehicle routing problem) is known to be NP-hard, this auction mechanism has an important inherent complexity. Therefore, we use fast and efficient algorithms for the vehicle routing problem to ensure that the auction can be used in operational decision making. Numerical results are presented, indicating that the auction achieves a savings potential better than the thus far reported approaches in the literature. Managerial insights are discussed, particularly related to the properties of the auction and value of the information

A dynamic programming approach to multi-objective time-dependent capacitated single vehicle routing problems with time windows

    Get PDF
A single vehicle performs several tours to serve a set of geographically dis- persed customers. The vehicle has a finite capacity and is only available for a limited amount of time. Moreover, tours' duration is restricted (e.g. due to quality or security issues). Because of road congestion, travel times are time-dependent: depending on the departure time at a customer, a different travel time is incurred. Furthermore, all customers need to get delivered in their specicified time windows. Contrary to most of the literature, we con- sider a multi-objective cost function: simultaneously minimizing the total time traveled including waiting times at customers due to time windows, and maximizing the total demand fulfilled. Efficient dynamic programming algorithms are developed to compute the Pareto set of routes, assuming a specific structure for time windows and travel time profiles

Multidepot distribution planning at logistics service provider Nabuurs B.V.

Distribution networks of many logistics service providers have evolved from single-depot to complex, dynamic multidepot networks. In a single-depot network, the deliveries from each depot are planned for that depot only, and drivers return to the starting depot to pick up each new order. In a multidepot network, the deliveries from multiple depots can be planned simultaneously; therefore, a logistics service provider can efficiently combine its resources, thus reducing its labor and transport costs. However, an increasing emphasis on reliability, customization, and flexibility is affecting the logistics structures. This paper describes the shift from single-depot planning to multidepot planning for Nabuurs B.V., a large Benelux logistics service provider that implemented a centralized, automated multidepot planning process throughout its organization. We developed a simulation model to evaluate system performance and to address performance challenges. In this paper, we discuss the results of extensive simulation tests and the specific recommendations that Nabuurs B.V. management implemented
