F-theory and linear sigma models
We present an explicit method for translating between the linear sigma model
and the spectral cover description of SU(r) stable bundles over an elliptically
fibered Calabi-Yau manifold. We use this to investigate the 4-dimensional
duality between (0,2) heterotic and F-theory compactifications. We indirectly
find that much interesting heterotic information must be contained in the
`spectral bundle' and in its dual description as a gauge theory on multiple
F-theory 7-branes.
A by-product of these efforts is a method for analyzing semistability and the
splitting type of vector bundles over an elliptic curve given as the sheaf

Spanish question answering evaluation
This paper reports the most significant issues related to the launching of a Monolingual Spanish Question Answering evaluation track at the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF 2003). It introduces some questions about multilingualism and describes the methodology for test suite production, task, judgment of answers as well as the results obtained by the participant systems
SL(2,Z) Multiplets in N=4 SYM Theory
We discuss the action of SL(2,Z) on local operators in D=4, N=4 SYM theory in
the superconformal phase. The modular property of the operator's scaling
dimension determines whether the operator transforms as a singlet, or
covariantly, as part of a finite or infinite dimensional multiplet under the
SL(2,Z) action. As an example, we argue that operators in the Konishi multiplet
transform as part of a (p,q) PSL(2,Z) multiplet. We also comment on the

AdS_3 Partition Functions Reconstructed
For pure gravity in AdS_3, Witten has given a recipe for the construction of
holomorphically factorizable partition functions of pure gravity theories with
central charge c=24k. The partition function was found to be a polynomial in
the modular invariant j-function. We show that the partition function can be
obtained instead as a modular sum which has a more physical interpretation as a
sum over geometries. We express both the j-function and its derivative in terms

Matrix Model as a Mirror of Chern-Simons Theory
Using mirror symmetry, we show that Chern-Simons theory on certain manifolds
such as lens spaces reduces to a novel class of Hermitian matrix models, where
the measure is that of unitary matrix models. We show that this agrees with the
more conventional canonical quantization of Chern-Simons theory. Moreover,
large N dualities in this context lead to computation of all genus A-model
topological amplitudes on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds in terms of matrix
integrals. In the context of type IIA superstring compactifications on these
Calabi-Yau manifolds with wrapped D6 branes (which are dual to M-theory on G2
manifolds) this leads to engineering and solving F-terms for N=1 supersymmetric
gauge theories with superpotentials involving certain multi-trace operators.Comment: harvmac, 54 pages, 13 figure
Quantum Wall Crossing in N=2 Gauge Theories
We study refined and motivic wall-crossing formulas in N=2 supersymmetric
gauge theories with SU(2) gauge group and N_f < 4 matter hypermultiplets in the
fundamental representation. Such gauge theories provide an excellent testing

Toward Non-security Failures as a Predictor of Security Faults and Failures
Abstract. In the search for metrics that can predict the presence of vulnerabilities early in the software life cycle, there may be some benefit to choosing metrics from the non-security realm. We analyzed non-security and security failure data reported for the year 2007 of a Cisco software system. We used non-security failure reports as input variables into a classification and regression tree (CART) model to determine the probability that a component will have at least one vulnerability. Using CART, we ranked all of the system components in descending order of their probabilities and found that 57 % of the vulnerable components were in the top nine percent of the total component ranking, but with a 48 % false positive rate. The results indicate that non-security failures can be used as one of the input variables for security-related prediction models
Globally Anisotropic High Porosity Silica Aerogels
We discuss two methods by which high porosity silica aerogels can be
engineered to exhibit global anisotropy. First, anisotropy can be introduced
with axial strain. In addition, intrinsic anisotropy can result during growth
and drying stages and, suitably controlled, it can be correlated with
preferential radial shrinkage in cylindrical samples. We have performed small
angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to characterize these two types of anisotropy. We
show that global anisotropy originating from either strain or shrinkage leads
to optical birefringence and that optical cross-polarization studies are a

Chiral phase properties of finite size quark droplets in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model
Chiral phase properties of finite size hadronic systems are investigated
within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Finite size effects are taken into
account by making use of the multiple reflection expansion. We find that, for
droplets with relatively small baryon numbers, chiral symmetry restoration is
enhanced by the finite size effects. However the radius of the stable droplet
does not change much, as compared to that without the multiple reflection
