Abundant stable gauge field hair for black holes in anti-de sitter space

    Get PDF
We present new hairy black hole solutions of SU(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory in asymptotically anti–de Sitter (AdS) space. These black holes are described by N+1 independent parameters and have N-1 independent gauge field degrees of freedom. Solutions in which all gauge field functions have no zeros exist for all N, and for a sufficiently large (and negative) cosmological constant. At least some of these solutions are shown to be stable under classical, linear, spherically symmetric perturbations. Therefore there is no upper bound on the amount of stable gauge field hair with which a black hole in AdS can be endowed

Logarithmic Operators Fold D branes into AdS_3

    Get PDF
We use logarithmic conformal field theory techniques to describe recoil effects in the scattering of two Dirichlet branes in D dimensions. In the particular case that a D1 brane strikes a D3 brane perpendicularly, thereby folding it, we find that the recoil space-time is maximally symmetric, with AdS_3 x E_{D-3} geometry. We comment on the possible applications of this result to the study of transitions between different background metrics.Comment: 10 pages revtex, one eps figure include

Soliton and black hole solutions of su(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in anti-de Sitter space

    Get PDF
We present new soliton and hairy black hole solutions of su(N) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. These solutions are described by N+1 independent parameters, and have N-1 gauge field degrees of freedom. We examine the space of solutions in detail for su(3) and su(4) solitons and black holes. If the magnitude of the cosmological constant is sufficiently large, we find solutions where all the gauge field functions have no zeros. These solutions are of particular interest because we anticipate that at least some of them will be linearly stable.Comment: 15 pages, 20 figures, minor changes, accepted for publication in Physical Review

The Baryon Isgur-Wise Function in the Large NcN_c Limit

In the large NcN_c limit, the Λb\Lambda_b and Λc\Lambda_c can be treated as bound states of chiral solitons and mesons containing a heavy quark. We show that the soliton and heavy meson are bound in an attractive harmonic oscillator potential. The Isgur-Wise function for ΛbΛceνˉe\Lambda_b\rightarrow\Lambda_c\, e^-\,\bar\nu_e decay is computed in the large NcN_c limit. Corrections to the form factor which depend on mN/mQm_N/ m_Q can be summed exactly (mNm_N and mQm_Q are the nucleon and heavy quark masses). We find that this symmetry breaking correction at zero recoil is only 1%1\%.Comment: 18 pages, 0 figures, uses harvma

Static axially symmetric solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills equations with a negative cosmological constant: black hole solutions

    Get PDF
We investigate static axially symmetric black hole solutions in a four-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory with a negative cosmological constant Λ\Lambda. These solutions approach asymptotically the anti-de Sitter spacetime and possess a regular event horizon. A discussion of the main properties of the solutions and the differences with respect to the asymptotically flat case is presented. The mass of these configurations is computed by using a counterterm method. We note that the Λ=3\Lambda=-3 configurations have an higher dimensional interpretation in context of d=11d=11 supergravity. The existence of axially symmetric monopole and dyon solutions in a fixed Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter background is also discussed. An exact solution of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations is presented in Appendix.Comment: 47 pages, 47 figure

One-Loop Corrections to the S and T Parameters in a Three Site Higgsless Model

    Get PDF
In this paper we compute the the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters in a highly deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. In addition to the electroweak gauge bosons, this model contains a single extra triplet of vector states (which we denote \rho^{\pm} and \rho^0), rather than an infinite tower of "KK" modes. We compute the corrections to S and T in 'tHooft-Feynman gauge, including the ghost, unphysical Goldstone-boson, and appropriate "pinch" contributions required to obtain gauge-invariant results for the one-loop self-energy functions. We demonstrate that the chiral-logarithmic corrections naturally separate into two parts, a model-independent part arising from scaling below the \rho mass, which has the same form as the large Higgs-mass dependence of the S or T parameter in the standard model, and a second model-dependent contribution arising from scaling between the \rho mass and the cutoff of the model. The form of the universal part of the one-loop result allows us to correctly interpret the phenomenologically derived limits on the S and T parameters (which depend on a "reference" Higgs-boson mass) in this three-site Higgsless model. Higgsless models may be viewed as dual to models of dynamical symmetry breaking akin to "walking technicolor", and in these terms our calculation is the first to compute the subleading 1/N corrections to the S and T parameters. We also discuss the reduction of the model to the ``two-site'' model, which is the usual electroweak chiral lagrangian, noting the ``non-decoupling'' contributions present in the limit as M_\rho goes to infinity.Comment: 58 pages; uses JHEP and axodraw. Baryons Containing a Heavy Quark as Solitons

    Get PDF
The possibility of interpreting baryons containing a single heavy quark as bound states of solitons (that arise in the nonlinear sigma model) and heavy mesons is explored. Particular attention is paid to the parity of the bound states and to the role of heavy quark symmetry.Comment: 15 pages, uses phyzzx.tex and tables.tex, REVISED VERSION: Some of the results have changed because of a crucial minus sign, CALT-68-1783 and UCSD/PTH 92-1

The Three Site Model at One-Loop

    Get PDF
In this paper we compute the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to all O(p^4) counterterms in the three site Higgsless model. The calculation is performed using the background field method for both the chiral- and gauge-fields, and using Landau gauge for the quantum fluctuations of the gauge fields. The results agree with our previous calculations of the chiral-logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters in 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. The work reported here includes a complete evaluation of all one-loop divergences in an SU(2) x U(1) nonlinear sigma model, corresponding to an electroweak effective Lagrangian in the absence of custodial symmetry.Comment: 40 pages, nine included eps figures. Light Quark Spin-Flavor Symmetry for Baryons Containing a Heavy Quark in Large N QCD

The couplings and interactions of baryons containing a heavy quark are related by light quark spin-flavor symmetry in the large NN limit. The single pion coupling constant which determines all heavy quark baryon-pion couplings is equal to the pion coupling constant for light quark baryons. Light quark symmetry relations amongst the baryon couplings are violated at order 1/N21/N^2. Heavy quark spin-flavor symmetry is used in conjunction with large NN light quark spin-flavor symmetry to determine the couplings of the degenerate doublets of heavy quark baryons.Comment: (14 pages, 2 figs, uses harvmac and uufiles), UCSD/PTH 93-1

Deconstruction and Elastic pi pi Scattering in Higgsless Models

We study elastic pion-pion scattering in global linear moose models and apply the results to a variety of Higgsless models in flat and AdS space using the Equivalence Theorem. In order to connect the global moose to Higgsless models, we first introduce a block-spin transformation which corresponds, in the continuum, to the freedom to perform coordinate transformations in the Higgsless model. We show that it is possible to make an "f-flat" deconstruction in which all of the f-constants f_j of the linear moose model are identical; the phenomenologically relevant f-flat models are those in which the coupling constants of the groups at either end of the moose are small - corresponding to the global linear moose. In studying pion-pion scattering, we derive various sum rules, including one analogous to the KSRF relation, and use them in evaluating the low-energy and high-energy forms of the leading elastic partial wave scattering amplitudes. We obtain elastic unitarity bounds as a function of the mass of the lightest KK mode and discuss their physical significance.Comment: 33 pages, JHEP3. Minor typos correcte
