    Cortex – basal ganglia synchronization in Parkinson’s disease

    poster abstractIncreased synchrony in the beta band in cortico-basal ganglia circuits is well described in patients with PD. Less is known, however, about how these abnormal firing patterns are correlated across these brain regions. In this study we investigated how this intra-operative data recorded from STN correlates with scalp recorded EEG. Intraoperative single unit recordings and LFPs were obtained from STN and scalp EEG recordings were collected from four electrodes positioned over prefrontal and motor areas. We computed the STN spike-LFP (Local Filed Potential) phase synchrony over short temporal windows as it fluctuates in time. We also computed the EEG phase synchrony index time series for all 6 pairs of EEG electrodes. Next we explored cross-correlation between the two synchrony level time-series of the spike-LFP vs. EEG pairs. EEG synchrony was found to be correlated with spike-LFP synchrony. Correlation between surface EEG and STN was strongest for ipsilateral EEG and STN recordings. Spike-LFP synchronization is believed to characterize the input-output characteristics of STN dynamics and to be strongly relevant to the expression of motor symptoms. Our results indicate that non-invasive and relatively simple EEG recordings retain some information about synchronous dynamics in the subcortical regions, which can be access only in an invasive manner during functional neurosurgical procedures

    In canonical quantum gravity certain topological properties of 3-manifolds are of interest. This article gives an account of those properties which have so far received sufficient attention, especially those concerning the diffeomorphism groups of 3-manifolds. We give a summary of these properties and list some old and new results concerning them.     Extremely red galaxies: dust attenuation and classification

    We re-address the classification criterion for extremely red galaxies (ERGs) of Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000 -- PM00), which aims to separate, in the Ic-K (or Rc-K) vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, passively evolving, old (> 1 Gyr) stellar populations in a dust-free environment, associated with ellipticals (Es), from dusty starburst galaxies (DSGs), both at 1 < z < 2. We explore a category of objects not considered previously, i.e., galaxies forming in this redshift range on short (0.1 Gyr) timescales and observed also in their early, dusty post-starburst phase. We also investigate the impact of structure of the dusty medium and dust amount on the observed optical/near-IR colours of high-z DSGs/DPSGs, through multiple-scattering radiative transfer calculations for a dust/stars configuration and an extinction function calibrated with nearby dusty starbursts. As a main result, we find that dusty post-starburst galaxies (DPSGs), with ages between 0.2 and 1 Gyr, at 1.3 < z < 2 mix with Es at 1 < z < 2 for a large range in dust amount. This ``intrusion'' is a source of concern for the present two-colour classification of ERGs. On the other hand, we confirm, in agreement with PM00, that DSGs are well separated from Es, both at 1 < z < 2, in the Ic-K vs. J-K colour--colour diagram, whatever the structure (two-phase clumpy or homogeneous) of their dusty medium and their dust amount are. This result holds under the new hypothesis of high-z Es being as dusty as nearby ones. Thus the interpretation of the optical/near-IR colours of high-z Es may suffer from a multiple degeneracy among age, metallicity, dust and redshift. We also find that DPSGs at z around 1 mix with DSGs at 1 < z < 2, as a function of dust amount and structure of the dusty medium.     Closed forms and multi-moment maps

    We extend the notion of multi-moment map to geometries defined by closed forms of arbitrary degree. We give fundamental existence and uniqueness results and discuss a number of essential examples, including geometries related to special holonomy. For forms of degree four, multi-moment maps are guaranteed to exist and are unique when the symmetry group is (3,4)-trivial, meaning that the group is connected and the third and fourth Lie algebra Betti numbers vanish. We give a structural description of some classes of (3,4)-trivial algebras and provide a number of examples.Comment: 36 page

    Homeopathic medical practice: Long-term results of a cohort study with 3981 patients

    BACKGROUND: On the range of diagnoses, course of treatment, and long-term outcome in patients who chose to receive homeopathic medical treatment very little is known. We investigated homeopathic practice in an industrialized country under everyday conditions. METHODS: In a prospective, multicentre cohort study with 103 primary care practices with additional specialisation in homeopathy in Germany and Switzerland, data from all patients (age >1 year) consulting the physician for the first time were observed. The main outcome measures were: Patient and physician assessments (numeric rating scales from 0 to 10) and quality of life at baseline, and after 3, 12, and 24 months. RESULTS: A total of 3,981 patients were studied including 2,851 adults (29% men, mean age 42.5 ± 13.1 years; 71% women, 39.9 ± 12.4 years) and 1,130 children (52% boys, 6.5 ± 3.9 years; 48% girls, 7.0 ± 4.3 years). Ninety-seven percent of all diagnoses were chronic with an average duration of 8.8 ± 8 years. The most frequent diagnoses were allergic rhinitis in men, headache in women, and atopic dermatitis in children. Disease severity decreased significantly (p < 0.001) between baseline and 24 months (adults from 6.2 ± 1.7 to 3.0 ± 2.2; children from 6.1 ± 1.8 to 2.2 ± 1.9). Physicians' assessments yielded similar results. For adults and young children, major improvements were observed for quality of life, whereas no changes were seen in adolescents. Younger age and more severe disease at baseline were factors predictive of better therapeutic success. CONCLUSION: Disease severity and quality of life demonstrated marked and sustained improvements following homeopathic treatment period. Our findings indicate that homeopathic medical therapy may play a beneficial role in the long-term care of patients with chronic diseases

    ER stress regulates myeloid-derived suppressor cell fate through TRAIL-R–mediated apoptosis

    Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) dampen the immune response thorough inhibition of T cell activation and proliferation and often are expanded in pathological conditions. Here, we studied the fate of MDSCs in cancer. Unexpectedly, MDSCs had lower viability and a shorter half-life in tumor-bearing mice compared with neutrophils and monocytes. The reduction of MDSC viability was due to increased apoptosis, which was mediated by increased expression of TNF-related apoptosis–induced ligand receptors (TRAIL-Rs) in these cells. Targeting TRAIL-Rs in naive mice did not affect myeloid cell populations, but it dramatically reduced the presence of MDSCs and improved immune responses in tumor-bearing mice. Treatment of myeloid cells with proinflammatory cytokines did not affect TRAIL-R expression; however, induction of ER stress in myeloid cells recapitulated changes in TRAIL-R expression observed in tumor-bearing hosts. The ER stress response was detected in MDSCs isolated from cancer patients and tumor-bearing mice, but not in control neutrophils or monocytes, and blockade of ER stress abrogated tumor-associated changes in TRAIL-Rs. Together, these data indicate that MDSC pathophysiology is linked to ER stress, which shortens the lifespan of these cells in the periphery and promotes expansion in BM. Furthermore, TRAIL-Rs can be considered as potential targets for selectively inhibiting MDSCs

    D-branes on general N=1 backgrounds: superpotentials and D-terms

    We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity of the superpotentials is also studied and a moment map associated to the D-terms is proposed. Among different examples, we discuss an application to the study of D7-branes on SU(3)-structure backgrounds, which reproduces and generalizes some previous results.Comment: 50 pages; v2: table of contents, some clarifications and references added; v3: typos corrected and references adde
