An exploratory study of professional development experiences for new middle school science teachers in a suburban school district

University of Missouri--Columbia 2009.This case study analyzes interview data for the perceived support of professional development provided to new science teachers by a large suburban school district. Twelve new middle school teachers and 5 administrators were interviewed. Findings suggest the most useful adult learning occurred in the learning communities model of professional development. Adult learning that uses direct lecture and little teacher collaboration was found to be the least effective. The study recommends that districts provide better training to leadership regarding the delivery of quality learning communities, improve mentor selection and training, and provide new teachers with more quality feedback. The roles of leadership and relationships were interpreted as the most influential variables in whether or not new middle school science teachers felt they were supported through district-sponsored training. Educational literature on adult learning theories and quality professional development support this study's findings and conclusions.Includes bibliographical reference
Discovery of a New Quadruple Lens HST 1411+5211
Gravitational lensing is an important tool for probing the mass distribution
of galaxies. In this letter we report the discovery of a new quadruple lens HST
1411+5211 found in archived WFPC2 images of the galaxy cluster CL140933+5226.
If the galaxy is a cluster member then its redshift is . The images of
the source appear unresolved in the WFC implying that the source is a quasar.
We have modeled the lens as both a single galaxy and a galaxy plus a cluster.
The latter model yields excellent fits to the image positions along with
reasonable parameters for the galaxy and cluster making HST 1411+5211 a likely
gravitational lens. Determination of the source redshift and confirmation of
the lens redshift would allow us to put strong constraints on the mass

Dust Emission Features in NGC 7023 between 0.35 and 2.5 micron: Extended Red Emission (0.7 micron) and Two New Emission Features (1.15 and 1.5 micron)
We present 0.35 to 2.5 micron spectra of the south and northwest filaments in
the reflection nebula NGC 7023. These spectra were used to test the theory of
Seahra & Duley that carbon nanoparticles are responsible for Extended Red
Emission (ERE). Our spectra fail to show their predicted second emission band
at 1.0 micron even though both filaments exhibit strong emission in the
familiar 0.7 micron ERE band. The northwest filament spectrum does show one,
and possibly two, new dust emission features in the near-infrared. We clearly
detect a strong emission band at 1.5 micron which we tentatively attribute to
beta-FeSi_2 grains. We tentatively detect a weaker emission band at 1.15 micron
which coincides with the location expected for transitions from the conduction
band to mid-gap defect states of silicon nanoparticles. This is added evidence
that silicon nanoparticles are responsible for ERE as they already can explain

Effects of ethical leadership on emotional exhaustion in high moral intensity situations
© 2015 Elsevier Inc. Emotional exhaustion is a threat to standard operations, particularly in organizations in which physical safety is at risk. High moral intensity is inherent in such organizations due to the magnitude of consequences associated with ethical/unethical conduct. The authors proposed a psychological process in which ethical leadership affects emotional exhaustion directly and indirectly through team cohesion. As military operational contexts typically are (or frequently have the potential to become) high moral intensity situations, the authors tested their model among 338 military personnel deployed in combat zones. They found that: (1) team cohesion partially mediated the relationship between ethical leadership and emotional exhaustion, and (2) this psychological process of direct and indirect effects of ethical leadership did not hold among individuals approaching the low end of conscientiousness
Multi-Decadal Decline of Mercury in the North Atlantic Atmosphere Explained by Changing Subsurface Seawater Concentrations
[1] We analyze 1977–2010 trends in atmospheric mercury (Hg) from 21 ship cruises over the North Atlantic (NA) and 15 over the South Atlantic (SA). We find a steep 1990–2009 decline of −0.046 ± 0.010 ng m−3 a−1 (−2.5% a−1) over the NA (steeper than at Northern Hemispheric land sites) but no significant decline over the SA. Surface water Hg0 measurements in the NA show a decline of −5.7% a−1since 1999, and limited subsurface ocean data show an ∼80% decline from 1980 to present. We use a coupled global atmosphere-ocean model to show that the decline in NA atmospheric concentrations can be explained by decreasing oceanic evasion from the NA driven by declining subsurface water Hg concentrations. We speculate that this large historical decline of Hg in the NA Ocean could have been caused by decreasing Hg inputs from rivers and wastewater and by changes in the oxidant chemistry of the atmospheric marine boundary layer.Engineering and Applied Science
The accretion disc in the quasar SDSS J0924+0219
We present single-epoch multi-wavelength optical-NIR observations of the
"anomalous" lensed quasar SDSS J0924+0219, made using the Magellan 6.5-metre
Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. The data clearly resolve
the anomalous bright image pair in the lensed system, and exhibit a strong
decrease in the anomalous flux ratio with decreasing wavelength. This is
interpreted as a result of microlensing of a source of decreasing size in the
core of the lensed quasar. We model the radius of the continuum emission
region, sigma, as a power-law in wavelength, sigma lambda^zeta. We place an
upper limit on the Gaussian radius of the u'-band emission region of 3.04E16
h70^{-1/2} (/M_sun)^{1/2} cm, and constrain the size-wavelength power-law
index to zeta<1.34 at 95% confidence. These observations rule out an alpha-disc
prescription for the accretion disc in SDSS J0924+0219 with 94% confidence.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
