    T-duality and Actions for Non-BPS D-branes

    Get PDF
We employ T-duality to restrict the tachyon dependence of effective actions for non-BPS D-branes. For the Born-Infeld part the criteria of T-duality and supersymmetry are satisfied by a simple extension of the D-brane Born-Infeld action.Comment: Latex, 11 page

N=2 Rigid Supersymmetry with Gauged Central Charge

    Get PDF
We develop a general setting for N=2 rigid supersymmetric field theories with gauged central charge in harmonic superspace. We consider those N=2 multiplets which have a finite number of off-shell components and exist off shell owing to a non-trivial central charge. This class includes, in particular, the hypermultiplet with central charge and various versions of the vector-tensor multiplet. For such theories we present a manifestly supersymmetric universal action. Chern-Simons couplings to an external N=2 super Yang-Mills multiplet are given, in harmonic superspace, for both the linear and nonlinear vector-tensor multiplets with gauged central charge. We show how to deduce the linear version of the vector-tensor multiplet from six dimensions.Comment: 46 pages, latex, no figure

Super Five Brane Hamiltonian and the Chiral Degrees of Freedom

We construct the Hamiltonian of the super five brane in terms of its physical degrees of freedom. It does not depend on the inverse of the induced metric. Consequently, some singular configurations are physically admissible, implying an interpretation of the theory as a multiparticle one. The symmetries of the theory are analyzed from the canonical point of view in terms of the first and second class constraints. In particular it is shown how the chiral sector may be canonically reduced to its physical degrees of freedom.Comment: 16 pages, typos correcte

N=8 Supergravity on the Light Cone

We construct the generating functional for the light-cone superfield amplitudes in a chiral momentum superspace. It generates the n-point particle amplitudes which on shell are equivalent to the covariant ones. Based on the action depending on unconstrained light-cone chiral scalar superfield, this functional provides a regular d=4 QFT path integral derivation of the Nair-type amplitude constructions. By performing a Fourier transform into the light-cone chiral coordinate superspace we find that the quantum corrections to the superfield amplitudes with n legs are non-local in transverse directions for the diagrams with the number of loops smaller than n(n-1)/2 +1. This suggests the reason why UV infinities, which are proportional to local vertices, cannot appear at least before 7 loops in the light-cone supergraph computations. By combining the E7 symmetry with the supersymmetric recursion relations we argue that the light-cone supergraphs predict all loop finiteness of d=4 N=8 supergravity.Comment: 38

    Covariant Quantization of D-branes

    Get PDF
We have found that kappa-symmetry allows a covariant quantization provided the ground state of the theory is strictly massive. For D-p-branes a Hamiltonian analysis is performed to explain the existence of a manifestly supersymmetric and Lorentz covariant description of the BPS states of the theory. The covariant quantization of the D-0-brane is presented as an example.Comment: 16 pages, no figure

The general gaugings of maximal d=9 supergravity

We use the embedding tensor method to construct the most general maximal gauged/massive supergravity in d=9 dimensions and to determine its extended field content. Only the 8 independent deformation parameters (embedding tensor components, mass parameters etc.) identified by Bergshoeff \textit{et al.} (an SL(2,R) triplet, two doublets and a singlet can be consistently introduced in the theory, but their simultaneous use is subject to a number of quadratic constraints. These constraints have to be kept and enforced because they cannot be used to solve some deformation parameters in terms of the rest. The deformation parameters are associated to the possible 8-forms of the theory, and the constraints are associated to the 9-forms, all of them transforming in the conjugate representations. We also give the field strengths and the gauge and supersymmetry transformations for the electric fields in the most general case. We compare these results with the predictions of the E11 approach, finding that the latter predicts one additional doublet of 9-forms, analogously to what happens in N=2, d=4,5,6 theories.Comment: Latex file, 43 pages, reference adde

    Consistent truncation of d = 11 supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7

We study the system of equations derived twenty five years ago by B. de Wit and the first author [Nucl. Phys. B281 (1987) 211] as conditions for the consistent truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity on AdS_4 x S^7 to gauged N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. By exploiting the E_7(7) symmetry, we determine the most general solution to this system at each point on the coset space E_7(7)/SU(8). We show that invariants of the general solution are given by the fluxes in eleven-dimensional supergravity. This allows us to both clarify the explicit non-linear ansatze for the fluxes given previously and to fill a gap in the original proof of the consistent truncation. These results are illustrated with several examples.Comment: 41 pages, typos corrected, published versio

The Gaugings of Maximal D=6 Supergravity

    Get PDF
We construct the most general gaugings of the maximal D=6 supergravity. The theory is (2,2) supersymmetric, and possesses an on-shell SO(5,5) duality symmetry which plays a key role in determining its couplings. The field content includes 16 vector fields that carry a chiral spinor representation of the duality group. We utilize the embedding tensor method which determines the appropriate combinations of these vectors that participate in gauging of a suitable subgroup of SO(5,5). The construction also introduces the magnetic duals of the 5 two-form potentials and 16 vector fields.Comment: 34 pages, latex, reference added, typo's corrected and minor improvements mad

    E7(7) invariant Lagrangian of d=4 N=8 supergravity

    Get PDF
We present an E7(7) invariant Lagrangian that leads to the equations of motion of d=4 N=8 supergravity without using Lagrange multipliers. The superinvariance of this new action and the closure of the supersymmetry algebra are proved explicitly for the terms that differ from the Cremmer--Julia formulation. Since the diffeomorphism symmetry is not realized in the standard way on the vector fields, we switch to the Hamiltonian formulation in order to prove the invariance of the E7(7) invariant action under general coordinate transformations. We also construct the conserved E7(7)-Noether current of maximal supergravity and we conclude with comments on the implications of this manifest off-shell E7(7)-symmetry for quantizing d=4 N=8 supergravity, in particular on the E7(7)-action on phase space.Comment: 45 pages, references adde

On The spectrum of a Noncommutative Formulation of the D=11 Supermembrane with Winding

    Get PDF
A regularized model of the double compactified D=11 supermembrane with nontrivial winding in terms of SU(N) valued maps is obtained. The condition of nontrivial winding is described in terms of a nontrivial line bundle introduced in the formulation of the compactified supermembrane. The multivalued geometrical objects of the model related to the nontrivial wrapping are described in terms of a SU(N) geometrical object which in the N N\to \infty limit, converges to the symplectic connection related to the area preserving diffeomorphisms of the recently obtained non-commutative description of the compactified D=11 supermembrane.(I. Martin, J.Ovalle, A. Restuccia. 2000,2001) The SU(N) regularized canonical lagrangian is explicitly obtained. In the N N\to \infty limit it converges to the lagrangian in (I.Martin, J.Ovalle, A.Restuccia. 2000,2001) subject to the nontrivial winding condition. The spectrum of the hamiltonian of the double compactified D=11 supermembrane is discussed. Generically, it contains local string like spikes with zero energy. However the sector of the theory corresponding to a principle bundle characterized by the winding number n0n \neq 0, described by the SU(N) model we propose, is shown to have no local string-like spikes and hence the spectrum of this sector should be discrete.Comment: 16 pages.Latex2
